Capt. Val, a little nervous knowing something was not quite right with your plane. I probably panicked some while you and Eric remained cool as a cucumber. As we used to say in the US Navy, when a Sailor did a task well, "Bravo Zulu!" in dealing with your left alternator issue. You did the most important things: Aviate, Navigate, Communicate. Then you "wound the clock," which helped to keep your mind clear and focused on the aviating. I'm wondering if you might have been able to shut down some of the moving maps, so as to shed some of the load. It was a good move postponing the position and landing lights till they were definitely necessary. BTW, Eric, the "natural wet suit" is best! 😁😉

Nothing like an alternator burn out over the ocean. Hey great video it sure looks pretty flying over the small islands and water. The views from the cameras were great. I’ve rebuilt alternators in cars. Not much to them. The bridge rectifier usually loses a diode and the power gets cut by at least one third. I’ve seen the regulater and brushes go bad too. There’s more that can happen but those are the most common.

Merry Christmas Captain Valerie and Eric from Sydney Australia. Loose wire voltage reg Being "loose" must have decreased the conductive contact: at that connection. Was there evidence of: * Broken stands of wire * burnt or melted rudder insulation * corrosion/loosing at connector * is the wire the same gauge as R side. Merry Christmas ➕💫🕛💡💫🕛➖🔋🧲

Yeah, I checked out the Barons (especially the Turbo Baron) but for the money (at that time) I ended up with a 340. Same engines and fuel burn. Flying (at least a marginal climb) on one engine was a criteria that eliminated LOTS of small twins. Nice job handling the alternator issue.

Question for you & group here. When you need to fly a Holding Pattern or fly a standard Traffic Pattern in this plane, B58TC, Do you simply reduce manifold pressure to 15-18MP or do you need to either bring gear down or flaps 10 to fly slower in a Hold? Do you fly blue line plus 10kts in holds? Thanks in advance

Unsure if you two noticed, if not (and if it helps troubleshooting) at 11:17 alternator light for engine 1 went off and alt light for engine 2 came in for about one second, then switched back to alt 1 light.

Did you ever find out the cause? Was it the voltage regulators, alternators, wiring or something else? You sure handled that exceptionally well.

I found out something interesting recently, that the Eclipse 550 twin jet has as good or better fuel economy as the baron 58 despite being much faster and bigger. And a jet. Of course it's 3-5 times more expensive and you might not be able to fly from your home strip with it but it's still quite striking. 48GPH at 331KTAS

@@SkylineBaronPilot yeah it seems like it has some good qualities above basically anything else. pratt and whitney has unfortunately increased the price of the small engines to about a million a piece. I figure most jets can land on well kept grass but if they are not rated for it, will some make a big deal out of it and then there is the matter of length they need. How long is yours and do you have jetA?
