I met Bill in 2005 and was the first person to greet him at an airshow in PA. He shook my hand with both hands and I will never forget that...true respect. He treated me as if we grew in the same factory town in Upstate NY. What impressed me the most was he did not use a wheelchair after losing a leg. Being 80 years old his biceps were impressive.

Bill Guarnere's name is pronounced "gar near." The 101st didn't train in England for the possible German invasion of Europe (the Germans had already invaded much of Europe by 1943-44). Guarnere didn't help liberate the camp at Landsberg am Lech (not far from Landsberg prison where Hitler was held in 1924) because he had been badly wounded months earlier at Battle of the Bulge and had left East Company. And he lost his leg not from taking a bullet but from artillery shelling during that long battle. Get help checking your histories (and pronunciations).

I had the privilege of spending a few weeks with "Wild" Bill. He was a fun loving gentleman and no doubt one hell of a soldier. He mentioned that his brother had previously been killed in action in Italy and that he was highly motivated. He was always accommodating and a wealth of information. I had the pleasure of walking the area of Bastogne with Bill where the 106th PIR Easy Co. fought during the Battle of the Bulge. It was here where he lost his leg. He joked with those of us present that he would give $100 to the guy who could find his leg. He was a personality bigger than life. He enjoyed teasing me about being from California. One day while at the American cemetery in Luxembourg he and I were standing alone at the grave of Gen. George Patton. I pointed out to Bill that Patton was from California. I jokingly asked him if he ever gave Patton a hard time about it. Bill looked at me and emphatically said, "No one gave Patton any shit!" We had a good chuckle. Bill Guarnere was the epitome of the Greatest Generation and representative of all those wonderful WWII people from that now bygone era. God rest his soul.

Amazing the love combat veterans feel for each other. I was a bar tender for anti-tank company, and they had been having reunions annually for many years. The man that recruited me to bar tend told me that a lot of them, when wounded would sneak out of the hospital to get back to their unit. He said that often when they recovered and became walking wounded, they often made them M.P.s and did things like direct traffic or guard things. Then when they were released from medical, they would be sent to a replacement center and could be assigned to any unit. They wanted to be with their friends and not with strangers, so they would sneak out of the hospital and try to get back. That unit had been shot up a lot too.
