I'm currently playing the campaign once again. I got the latest DX11 renderer, AHaigh 01's HD textures, Lightning_Hunter's HD skins installed plus my own Reshade configuration. It looks really good! To be honest, it may the game I'm playing with the best picture quality. (Yes, even more than recent titles like DOOM 2016.) It's fantastic that this game is being worked on to this day. I'm really grateful to all the modders out there.

Thank you :) yea the progress is currently slow but Temple of Vandora needed a lot of attention! Besides the level updates I’m working on bug fixes, optimizations and new visual effects. Also time is limited and doing it all alone take a lot of time. Updating the website is the best way to show some progress. I’m working nearly daily and many hours on the project. So there is progress every single week. In a few weeks I’ll start to stream again but first I really want so finish other project related things like new areas to explore :)

Actually there is a mutator by shivaxi which replaces the original unreal blood. I only added red and green colored blood cloud emitters when a pawn got hit and a huge blood cloud when it become gibbed. Also some additional gore when you removed the head of a pawn carefully :)

Wow, richtig tolle Arbeit! Da hab ich ja wohl etwas zu früh mit meinem LP begonnen ;) In der schicken Redux Version würde das Ganze nochmal um ein vielfaches Schmackhafter rüber kommen. Das so ein Projekt verdammt viel Arbeit bedeutet und Zeit in Anspruch nimmt, da kann ich aus eigener Erfahrung ein Liedchen von singen. Ich habe damals Maps für Quake3Arena, Elite Force und auch Jedi Knight2 erstellt, sowie für das Game Iron Grip Warlord. Zudem bin ich der Kopf hinter dem Freeware Fun Shooter World of Padman (werde über alles in Kürze nochmal ein wenig erzählen, in einem Video), an diesem Game habe ich, mit einem Team zusammen, ganze 10 Jahre gebastelt. War eine coole, aber auch sehr heftige Zeit. Ich hab von der ganzen Technik und von Coding aber null Plan. Ich konnte den Q3 Editor bedienen und hatte ein Händchen für Gestaltung und Design ;) Also, Hut ab für all die Arbeit und Liebe, die hier noch in einen solchen Klassiker gesteckt werden! I wonder if 227J ever gets released. I remember hearing about it YEARS ago and since then have been holding out on replaying UT which now in retrospective seems dumb considering 5 years later there is still no release date or even sign it releases anytime soon/this year.

We made last November good progress related to 227j but keep in mind the founder of 227 is also a private person who do this all in is freetime and that can be difficult by having a fulltime job and children. I have no hurry for a 227j release since Redux would also take a few more years then expected. Even Redux is a hobby project which I do in my freetime. But I’m sure there will be a release one day :)

Absolutely beautiful!!!! Thank you for making this. A few friendly requests/suggestions though. Realistic water, hi-res foe and weapon textures, and PLEASE include tessellation!!!! That would really ad a nice smoothing effect to the sharp edges of low-poly renderings of the wood and stone environments. Either way, bravo. I have been hoping someone would give Unreal 99' a facelift. Such a ground breaking game deserves a make-over. Nice job!

thank you very much =) for your requests I have a lot of limitations because I'm using a modified version of Unreal Engine 1. Realistic water is impossibily because Unreal Engine 1 does not support any water shaders and tesselation is absolutly not possible. For the hi-res textures the player can use s3tc textures and the HD Skin mod which already exist and they will be compatible with Unreal Redux. For me its mostly important to catch the original atmosphere and push it further. :)

Thank you very much :) You would be surprised but reworking all character models requires a lot of work and time. All animations need to be redone from scratch which includes rigging the whole model with bones, animate it very close to the original. Then the model need to be imported into unreal 227 as skeletal mesh and lots of code need to be rewritten to make the new model work. Having a bit better quality models with a skeletal meshes is also a dream I have for Unreal Redux.

They need to be redone from scratch because Unreal has no skeletal animations. So swapping to a new mesh would also require to reanimate every single character. That’s sadly a lot of work to do :(

As much as I love updated geometry I don't think fire particles look "right" in UEngine 1.0. I've always been a fan of fractal textures, they are iconic of this engine IMHO and can be created in higher resolution if needed. Also I don't like the Quadshot, it was fun in Seven Bullets, but there was a reason why Epic had it cut from the final game (and this reason is my favorite gun). Just my opinion, y'know. Oh, and will OldWeapons mutator work with this one? I'm a sucker for old gun sounds just for the fact they are different from UT ones. Otherwise it's a great work. Keep it up, because there are little chances of Firestorm or TCO being released ever, and every Unreal content is worth gold these days. It's also the closest thing to remake we'd ever get and proof that this 20-years-old technology still can boast some nice things, almost on par with its successor.

PrekiFromPoland hey thanks for your comment :) I guess the fire is a matter of taste. I’m not really a fan of the x crossed 2d sheets. With those emitters the fire can look more volumetric from every angle of view. It’s also not possible to create an in-engine fire texture with a size bigger then 256 x 256. I know most people do fear the implementation of the quadshot but I really like to add it that’s why I created a brand new model for it. It will be not easy to find this weapon while playing Unreal Redux the player have to do something to get it. Also the ammunition for this gun will be rare so the player can’t use it every time. I also do love the original oldschool sounds from Unreal! And yes you will have the possibility to play Unreal Redux with the updated visual weapon effects and the oldschool sounds with a mutator. I also hope that I can finish this mod one day. It’s a lot of work reworking, fixing and implementing the new gameplay features and mechanics to each level. I’ll keep working on it.

The installation will be easy. Once it’s released you simply need to copy all the stuff in to your main Unreal directory or I make an installer. I don’t know :) I have to touch the vortex rikers once again but I have no plans to add more rooms to the level.

UberPwnR there will be alot of compatibility issues with real coop I guess. because I use my own weapons and monsters which are placed directly into the Level. They arn't replaced by a mutator.

RLcoop should work to a degree with it, the only issue I can see that'd be kinda annoying is leaning might not work very well with the weapons idk about the monsters tho. Guess I'll see when its finished.

Thank you very much :) Unreal gold and Unreal Tournament are different games. I recommend the community multimedia Patches of both for running them on modern hardware. Or the new DX11 patch for both games. Unreal Tournament has a lot of cool SP mods. One of them is „Operation NaPali“. I’m really sorry that the development takes so long but it’s really a lot of work and I like to implement all the new things which came in my mind.

Some dynamic lights will cast realtime shadows. This technique costs a lot of performance.

This real-time shadow thing is a new 227j feature which will be available for all after 227j becomes officially released. I truly can’t tell how the 227 developers included it. I’m only using the new features and show what’s possible with the community patch.

Would it be possible to improve some of the water effects? At least those water effects without transparency (see 2:06) don't look really good compared to the general beauty of the game.

@@endurama1463 unfortunately not with the given renderers. The realtime water textures are still limited to 256 x 256 pixels. Maybe someone will write a new custom renderer for 227k to spice up some visuals.
