With the beef wrapped in betel leaf dish, I think you guys did not notice the bowl of water under the rice paper plate. That bowl is used to soften the rice paper. In Vietnam, we normally serve 2 types of rice paper, this one is the traditional one that MUST come with a bowl of water to soften it. The other one is in a rectangle shape and super thin and does not need to be soften with water.

Aw that’s so cool! Thanks so much for sharing Kevinly and I’m glad we could accompany you on your commute 🤗 considering the amount of street food we eat we very rarely get sick. I guess the reason is that everywhere we eat is highly researched- even if we’re not filming. I hate to waste my stomach space on a bad meal so I’m sort of obsessed with making sure every meal counts so will try and find popular local places wherever we are. If we ever have any tummy troubles we always turn to activated charcoal 😄 thanks for watching and commenting mate! Big love, Sheena

PSA: Soak the rice paper in the bowl of water provided. That's like eating unboiled spaghetti.
@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
Hi JoeOfCourse, thanks for watching and commenting! Thomas is a soaker but I find wetting it with the damp leaves is enough for me 😄 I was watching the locals when they were eating and hardly anyone dipped their rice paper in water. It’s great how with this type of food you can customise to your own taste. Hope you enjoyed this video! Cheers, Sheena

@@joeofcourse No no, you're not incorrect, I'm VNmese and in my family we always soak the rice paper.
@hanhang50864 жыл бұрын
I agree. Its not the soaking or wetting that's the problem its that it needs to time to dampen and become elastic or stretchy. This is a culinary item that requires patience on waiting for the wrap to do its thing. I'm not so sure I'm open about eating a "crunchy" rice paper before the process of elasticity comes in as I am use to it being a nice soft wrap to hold all the ingredients together. Personally I think its wrong to eat it too soon because the function of a wrap is to hold everything together not a crunchy mexican taco.

'Rice noodle mat' 🤣 such a cute but weird description. There's a dish called kway chup served in Thailand Singapore and Malaysia that features square pieces of noodles (like noodle 'mats' 😂) served with pigs organs in a broth. I know you have eaten this before. Anyhow, how crazy is that - a wrap within a wrap. That wild betel leaf is also used in the Thai dish mieng kham, a favourite of mine.

@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
Hi Phoenix Legion, thanks for watching! Nope we didn’t get sick at all in Vietnam. We always eat where it’s popular and busy with locals wherever we go so we very rarely get food poisoning. We do carry activated charcoal with us just in case though- it’s a wonder drug! Thanks for commenting on this one 😄 Cheers, Sheena

Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena what a great tip carrying activated charcoal. Do you take it after you get sick or before?
@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
@@Pixlanta when you get that first inkling of oooo something isn't right here, you pop 2-3 charcoal tablets and it does wonders. If it's a really bad case you just keep taking them throughout your sickness as the bugs attach themselves to the charcoal and it helps clear them from your system quicker 😀 Amazing stuff! Cheers, Sheena

7:50-7:52 I don't mean to be rude but it is just hilarious how we are so used to sitting at the high western dining table and suddenly we see Thomas sitting like this with the legs open. Being a Southeast asian I understand our propensity for sitting on stools and squatting but I just don't get how someone could eat comfortably with the stomach squashed in this position (ie I don't agree with this style of sitting when eating) 😂
@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
🤣🤣🤣🤣 especially when you have legs as long as Thomas’s! It’s so awkward for tall people as you can’t have your legs out straight either as that is weird. He always looks as if he’s folded into this frog-like/triangle pose. Keeps you limber though I suppose 😆 thanks for watching and commenting A O! Hope you enjoyed this one! Cheers, Sheena
