@@m1a1abrams3 The italian manual for the Tornado IDS says 800 knots, which would be 1481 km/h. The website of the german army says mach 1.3 in low altitude operations. Pilot reports (not very reliable source) state up to 850 knots for the ADV on the deck, though thats a different variant.

IRL top speed clean at sea level is around Mach 1.15, so roughly ~1400 km/h per the Italian manual. With 2 AIM-9L, wing pylons and 2 flare/chaff pods in the outer wings, around 1250 km/h (drag index 40 in the manual) with fully swept wings. A far cry from "1600 km/h fully loaded"....

@@Lemard77 I saw multiple papers stating 1589kmh (mach 1.5) at sea level while carrying a nuclear bomb. But I am not a Tornado enthusiast, in fact I don't really care about it that much, so your claim is probably more accurate than mine. F-4F case for example. Gaijin only gave it 2 Mavericks, despite it being able to carry 6. But they said it ever carried only 2 so it has only 2 in game. The fact is that 2 was only during training and if the war gone hot, they would load it with 6 Mavericks. It might be the same case with the Tornado. Italian manual was for peace time VNE 1400kmh and during wartime they would go full 1600kmh. But that's just my speculation. In any case. The plane is overtiered and I am not touching it until it get its appropriate BR and/or loadout/performance fix.

Man it’s so crazy that the Tornado with its MASSIVE elevators and fully extended wings is just a bit more manoeuvreable than an F-104. Mostly because it doesn’t make any sense physics wise and why did Gaijin have to artificially nerf an already non meta plane? IRL it was more nimble and quicker than in game but Gaijin just refuses to implement the changes suggested in the bug reports.

Tornado is nerfed for the same reason the Stormer is nerfed - anything that impacts the cashcow vehicles cannot be allowed in the game. So, because the Stormer carries Starstreaks, which can slap CAS aircraft and helicopters out of the air like a Latino mother IRL, it can never be good in War Thunder, as that would mean there would be a viable counter to CAS. The Tornado is the same. Imagine being a bunch of Russian players trying to spawncamp with your premium vehicles, and suddenly a Tornado comes zooming in, close to the ground, and just annihilates you before you have time to react. That would be a massive crimp on your pay-to-win power fantasy, no? And you're the main income base for Gaijin, so you need to be catered too first and foremost. Therefore, the aircraft will be gimped from the start.

One thing this excels at is orbital bombing - seriously, it rocks in GRB, more-so than any other GBU users (imo). The IDS ASSTA (German Tornado) gets better engines, making it quite a bit faster and you feel that the performance is better. As for the rudder, it's currently very bugged, waiting for several FM fixes.

My dad used to read lots of military magazines and journals back in the 70s and I would read through them when he was finished. I used to love the ads and short articles by the various suppliers all touting their wares - one in particular was by Mauser discussing the advantages of the BK-27 27mm revolver cannon over the M61 Gatling. According to Mauser, although the BK-27 had a lower ROF overall it had a quicker ROF in the first fraction of a second while the Gatling "spooled up". Whether this was true or not, and whether this is modeled in game I will never know but it seemed like a cool distinction to me.

I'm really confused. My basic aircraft knowledge lead me to believe that bigger rudder = better nose authority (especially at high speeds). The P-51 D-30 lacked the same rudder as the P-51 H and consequently has noticeably worse nose authority when in a high speed dive. However the argument could be made that the P-51H is a completely new airframe and has massive improvements in other facets. Another example is the F8F-1B which ingame has the same problem as the P-51 D-30. However the F8F-2 (which isn't ingame) with an extra large rudder to the best of my understanding probably fixed the problem of little nose authority in high speed dives. Why then does the tornado with it's whopping rudder have bad nose authority, especially at high speeds? Is my understanding of aircraft physics wrong? or Is the airframe ingame modelled incorrectly?

Anybody who expected the tornado to be competitive in the current game meta was simply delusional. Tornado flight characteristics were never good compared to multirole fighters of its time. Later variants were saved by a very good radar and good missile but the plane overall was just a F14 on a budget. It was set in stone it was not going to be good Vs Mirage 2000S5, F16, Mig 29, etc..

Although it has airbrakes and gigantic flaps, coupled with the airspawn and an acceptable climb rate. And then you have the guns that allow you to end things very quickly. But it sucks ass at sustained. It's probably the plane helping me the most to get better, bc you make a mistake and you're done. But the guns are definitely the best thing about it imo

I think they must have changed how kill credits work because I've noticed a lot recently if two people crit someone and then the person crashes, the person who critted them first gets the kill credit whereas it used to always be the person who damaged them most recently got the kill.

the auto wing sweep on it is terribad, likes to keep the wings too extended so you're always about to rip, Mig23 is the same but to a much lesser extent so it is actually usable, the tomcat's is great but yeah the bad auto swing implementation, the wing mounted flare pods and the mongo rudder make it just a chore to fly before you even consider the armament. Oooof. Impressive you were able to do so well in it.

The current Tornado makes me appreciate the F-4E/J/EJs Phantoms more. (In the context of War Thunder) They maneuver better, have better missile load-outs, have built in countermeasures, have a better gun. All while still ironically carrying more bombs than the Tornado. As a learning aircraft engineer AND having been lectured by a bloke who worked on this thing, it is a god awful representation and half baked at best. I by no means claim it is the greatest thing to grace the skies, although good god does it look gorgeous. It is nowhere near this bad. The thing should have far more speed and control than it has. not to mention that giant continental sized tail plane should be immune to fire ignitions in it's fuel tank due to it being dumped full of nitrogen as it drains. this doesn't even mention the auto control wing sweep, which was actually turned off by most pilots. as one of the Unofficial official Modifications to give manual control back to the pilot and let them toggle it on if they want it.

The plane has enough room for 4 9Ls but nope just two and a Sadge payload when doing CAS, guns are cool but GR.7 Harrier is still a better option for air and ground.

It had room but not the capability. The IDS version of the Tornado only had 2 missile pylons. Only the ADV variant added extra missile pylons.

tbh, I feel as tho they did something to the flight models since the MiG-21Bis-Sau rudder also feels a bit weird, it's like I'm having to roll **over** my rudder when wanting to bank in a turn

I really don't know why anyone would expect the Tornado to be super competitive in Air RB. Not only it lacks the armament, but the performance and maneouverability as well. I'm aware it's underperforming a bit at low altitude, but even then it would be worse than many 11.3s and even 11.0s. I'm expecting to see it downtiered at 11.0 or 10.7 in some months, it belongs there imo. Even the ADV variant would be a decent 11.3 nowadays (unless it's added with AMRAAM and ASRAAM, Which I doubt)

@@bpop2148 Buddy of mine used them and held a radar lock on an enemy and the missle just teamkilled some one on the other side of his plane as the lock was to his 9-10 o'clock while a team mate was at low 2 o'clok

I think, the reason it has such high br is because it is the fastest bomber, that can take down 2 bases, in the game. And thats it

Well, 6 months later and some experience gained has proved that it can in fact never actually get anywhere near the airbases no matter what you try
