Please welcome Jack Leuba as he joins KAC TV as the primary host replacing Trey Knight.
In this episode of KAC TV Jack Leuba and Trey Knight talk about the FN SCAR as well as never before seen SCAR program submissions by Knights Armament.
Jack Leuba joined the United States Marine Corps in 1997 as a Rifleman, beginning his secondary military occupational specialty of Marksmanship Coach in 1999, and Combat Marksmanship Instructor in 2002. In 2005, following two combat deployments to Iraq he was assigned to Weapons Training Battalion Quantico with the task of assisting in the creation and implementation of the USMC Combat Marksmanship Program, as well as the Foreign Weapons Instructor and Trainer Courses. During his time in Quantico he became involved in competitive practical shooting to bolster and validate the concepts and techniques taught in the programs and classes under his charge. His experience and knowledge of small arms were frequently referred to by internal and external agencies for weapons testing, product development, acquisitions, training, and training curriculum development. In 2007, Jack was selected to be the USMC's Marksmanship Liaison to the British Royal Marines. While working for the MoD, he assisted in the creation and implementation of three separate official programs of instruction, and provided individual instruction and training to numerous MoD units and agencies. Upon return from the UK he was again deployed for combat operations in Afghanistan with the USMC.
Jack has successfully completed numerous courses and military occupational specialty schools, to include: Marksmanship Coaches Course, Combat Marksmanship Instructor Course, Small Arms Weapons Instructor Course, Formal School Instructor Course, Close Quarters Battle School, Foreign Weapon Instructor Trainer Course, and the USMC High Risk Personnel Course. Personal awards include the Bronze Star with Combat "V" and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Following his departure from the DoD, Jack formed a tactics and firearms training and consulting company with another Marine Corps veteran. Jack brings his enthusiasm for imparting knowledge, technical skill, experience in the military and civilian firearms training, and expertise in the contemporary employment of small arms in a military context to KAC.
Knight's Armament was founded over 30 years ago as an R&D firm, specializing in products which met the needs of U.S. Special Operations troops. A foundation was laid which focused on providing highly efficient gear which solved real problems and functioned in an effective and intelligent manner. That same foundation is utilized today in the designing and manufacturing of our military weapon platforms. Every weapon that is offered in our Commercial and Law Enforcement lines is a direct modeling of those military platforms. The very same materials, machines, and personnel that go into the production of our military platforms are used in the production of these Commercial and Law Enforcement weapons. This means that the reputable consistency and reliability is available to everyone who handles a weapon from Knight's Armament Company.

KAC - don't sell out to the SCAR. Just keep perfecting the current platform.

I like that you brought attention to the free M4s and M16s they can get from their parent service branches, but it's not the real story of what happened. After all, that's always been there since before the SCAR program even began. It'd also been 6 years since the original competition and the SCAR had undergone the most intensive testing of any small arm in US history before adoption with over 2 million rounds across the platform in that time. So what changed? In 2010 the budget cuts from the 2009 session cut SOCOM's funding across the board by 15% and they were told to stand up an extra battalion at every group. Even if you had a wonder rifle that was undeniably better than the M4 in every single way and cost half as much... How does that half-price compare to free when you have those extra mouths to feed and a huge paycut on the way? You would weasel your words and say: In the view of SOCOM's limited funds, the SCAR wasn't enough of an improvement over the M4 to justify the cost. Don't say that it took 6 years to figure this out. Don't detail the extra personnel and 15% budget cut. Don't mention it's the most tested small arm in US history. Don't say that it's not FN's fault that you're reneging the contract and that the SCAR did everything that you asked it to do and more. After all, FN's a good whipping boy. They'll sit and they'll take this bloody nose because they wouldn't want to stir up trouble for their other contracts with the US or the remainder of the SCAR program. In the end, the entire SCAR program including the Mk16 has been approved for use by all branches after passing Milestone C. The issues you've raised are still there, but the gun does deserve the truth that doesn't see the light of day.

I realize I'm 9 years late to reply, but... There were many reasons why the FN SCAR program was cut beyond so-called "limited" SOCOM funds which, with 9 more years of insight, actually increased exponentially through the Obama, Trump, and now Biden administration. The SCAR program was never really affected by fiscal budget cuts because they were not Big Army nor Big Navy. The SCAR program and SOCOM in general, if anything, are loved by bean counters because they are force-multipliers - they have a huge impact for a low price. Look up Modern Tactical Shooting's video where Former Green Beret and SCAR program test member Jeff Gurwitch details the issues behind the SCAR in 5.56mm. He outlines the blatant issue with feeding where a round gets stuck above the chamber and renders the SCAR-L totally inoperable, the issues with the flimsy stock, the charging handle being slightly obstructed by optics when charged on either side, etc. When compared to what the M4 already offers, it was obvious that the SCAR-L didn't bring enough to the table. The 7.62mm SCAR-H is the only survivor of the program (which also consisted of the 40mm EGLM) for a reason. After extensive testing SOCOM-wide, it was the only part of the program that was useful at all to SOCOM operatives. When compared to the rifle it replaced - the heavy M14/Mk14 EBR along with shorter (but still lengthy) DMR variants of the SR-25, the choice was clear. Anyways, hello from the future, where we have 20/20 hindsight and some nicer gear for the people that need it.

Where are these Stoner 63 magazine to be found? It seems to me you would use magazines that are in common use as a selling point but good move having it be convertible to STANAG mags. The SLICK seems really cool, I would love to get some range time with it and the Stoner 63.

KAC, in your comment you say that your slick design is not better than the scar, but I'm willing to bet that it actually is. The scar design does not lend itself to being good at quick and accurate follow up or rapid fire shooting thanks in part to the massive bolt design. It is especially apparent in the 7.62 heavy version! You also say in the video that you chose to use a gas piston system because of CQB? I would also be willing to bet that the reason you went with the heavier piston system is to meet the stated requirement of a folding stock. I'm not a fan of the gas piston system but it's really too bad that SOCOM didn't give the contract to KAC.

***** Funny thing is I can't recall ever reading anything negative about the SCAR. I have gained my opinions only through months of extensive testing. The rife does have several great attributes. For my needs and purposes however, it couldn't compete with other systems. The most obvious shortcoming was CQM timed drills. The clock doesn't lie. To be fair though I've never touched the civilian version. Perhaps, like most things, the civilian market provides a higher quality product. Obviously opinions, skill and preferences vary. I'm sure your 17s is a fine rifle, I hope you enjoy it.

***** Well, given the nature of the internet and open forums, and the fact that you are responding to an obscured name and essentially faceless account (mine), I don't suppose I can blame you too much. However, I don't have anything at stake on this except my personal opinion. I don't really mean to convince you on this but if you are truly interested I can only suggest for you to grab a few thousand rounds, a couple different quality systems, get the shot timer out and do some objective testing. Take care
