Kalabhairav is the Lord who terrifies time. He is the most wrathful manifestation of Shiva. He roams around in cremation grounds, is surrounded by Vetalas, Pishachas, Bhutas, Jackals and other rejects from normal human society. All fear in human beings is rooted in the subconscious fear of death. Kalabhairav is the one form of the Divine that can help a seeker transcend this deepest of all fears. In another interpretation, harm in creation, harm in sustenance, and harm in destruction, indicating that he is the Lord of all the three fundamental forces of life. The Shiva Mahapurana states that once Brahma thought in his arrogance that since he has five heads and so does Shiva, therefore there is no difference between the two of them. To teach a lesson of humility to Brahma, the form of Kalabhairav emerged from Shiva and with the nail of his little finger cut off Brahma's fifth head. This head of Brahma became Bhairava's begging bowl, Brahma kapal or skull of the creator. There are other versions of the story of Kalabharav's emergence in different Puranas. From Kalabharav, eight other bhairavas emerged and became known as the Ashta bhairav. These were:- Ashitanga bhairav, Ruru bhairav, Chanda bhairav, Krodh Bhairav, Unmatt Bhairav, Kapal bhairav, Bheeshan bhairav, Samhar Bhairav. Each of them were paired with one of the Ashtamatrikas of the Shakti tradition. In Shiva temples of South India, bhairava idols can be found placed in the northern direction facing south. He is considered as the kshetrapal protector of the area. In North India, however, Kalabhairava becomes a supreme deity capable of giving all kinds of boons to a sincere devotee. In the ancient city of Kashi, there is perhaps the most famous of all Kalabhairava temples. Additionally, there are eight other temples of different forms of bhairava in Kashi. There is also the Kapala Mochana temple, which is one of the holiest places in the city. It is believed that the Brahma kapal from bhairava's hand dropped at this place and so bhairava decided to reside in Kashi permanently as a guardian of Kashi. One of the typical features of a bhairava temple is that devotees offer alcohol to the deity and then consume it as Prasad. In Tantric Lord, there are two forms of Shiva as Guru, Dakshinamoorti and Kalabhairava. It is from the divine world of Kalabhairava that the Tantra shastras have emerged, especially the Kali-kula and Vamachara tantras. Adi Shankara composed a powerful hymn to Kalabhairava known as the Kalabhairavashtakam. It is used as the primary stotra for worshipping the deity. The sadhanas of bhairava causes a tremendous upsurge of Shakti inside the sadhaka, breaking down all impurities and blockages resulting in a sense of absolute fearlessness. Being the Lord of spirits and all ethereal beings, blessings of Kalabhiarava can protect a seeker from all sorts of attacks from any negative entity. Sometimes the worship of Kalabhiarava can even give immense wealth to a sadhaka, especially rare gems and other forms and other items. These however can rarely be used as normal currency. The city of Kashi and especially the great shamashans, Harishchandra and Manikarnika are considered to be extremely auspicious abodes of bhairava. He is also the guardian of the city of Kashi, so anybody who dies in Kashi has to face the bhairava yatana punishment of Pairava, by which his karmic slate is wiped clean and in this way becomes free from the pains of repeated rebirth. Late 16th century there was a legendary Oghad in Varanasi by the name of Kinaram. It is believed that Lord Dattatreya himself came as his guru. He, along with another great oghad Kaluram had started a Rudra dhuni using fire from the cremation grounds of Manikarnika in Kashi. Kalabhairava was invoked in this fire and it has been kept continuously burning since the last 400 years. Currently the dhuni is looked after by the aghoris of the Kinaram ashram in Varanasi. Dogs are considered specially auspicious for Kalabhairava, they are his Vahana. Feeding dogs, specially black dogs is a good way to gain favor with the Devata. Additionally, in Jyotishshastra Kalabhairava can control the negative effects of Saturn since it is considered as a guru of Saturn. The Ashthamitithi of the Krishna Paksa of Karthik Masa is the most auspicious night for bhairava upasana. Especially if the Tithi coincides with your Sunday, then it becomes doubly powerful for any kind of seva of Kalabhairava. Texts say, anyone who sincerely worships bhairava on that night is freed from fear and sin and by blessings of bhairava remains undefeated in any circumstance. May that great Lord of annihilation free us from the chains that bind our consciousness. May he take us beyond conditioning into the realm of the eternally free.
