When I was 13, I was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. I had to receive treatment at a children's hospital roughly 3 hours from my home because we didn't have access to a pediatric oncology clinic nearby. Because at the start of treatment I had to get chemo pretty much every other day, we spent most of our time at a guest house for families of kids with medical problems (kinda like the Ronald McDonald House but privately owned). Over the first few months of treatment, I found myself listening to the same songs each night as a way of emotional release and hope for the coming days. I don't really remember much about the next few years as I either blocked out the memories or too many spinal taps caused a lapse in memory, but one vivid memory sticks with me to this day. Nearly every night at that guest house, as I shared a room with my parents, I would wait till they fell asleep. I would start listening to my "Hope Playlist" and reflect on what happened and what is to come. This song was one of the most powerful on my playlist because I felt like the chorus perfectly matched what I was feeling and what I hoped for, "I don't know what tomorrow holds. I'm learning how to let it go. Jesus, you are in control of my tomorrow. Come and take the fear away until there's nothing left but faith. I know you can help me face my tomorrow." One particular night, as I lay in the darkness, listening to this song, I remember bawling my eyes out at the lyrics. I felt completely helpless in that moment, and resolved to submit all of my future to the Lord. I was unsure of what the next day of treatment would entail, but I knew I wouldn't have to worry about it because God would help me face it. A few years later, I was going through some old KZbin playlists. At the time, I had forgotten about this memory. Now out of treatment, I saw the song and decided to listen to it. I can't even describe the wave of emotions that hit me in the moment the chorus hit. It was like traveling back in time to the exact night before treatment in 2014. It was like I was reliving those emotions and they were just as vivid as before. Though I can't remember the past few years of my life, and I often mourn the lost years of my childhood, I still come back to this one moment in time, the one memory I have of this experience that is clear as day. Though I know this song probably wasn't intended to carry so much emotional weight, I felt it perfectly encapsulated my emotions and my feelings about my current situation. It's like a time capsule that I visit to remind myself of all that God has helped me through. In the unlikely event that Unspoken reads this, thank you.
