The First Indochina War also had a hero who did the same heroic deed. He was Phan Dinh Giot, a Vietnamese soldier who fought in the battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954. He used his body to cover up a machinegun nest to make way for his comrade. He died at the age of 32, posthumously awarded the "Hero of the People's Armed Force".

I had dinner with a Korean War vet and he recounted a story that three Chinese soldiers had crawled yards from a machine gun pill box and dug a hideout under it. They hid in there all day waiting to attack at night. He said that was the bravest thing he ever saw in the war. Even if they succeeded it was suicide. Decades later he and his wife visited China often and he made friends with many Chinese veterans of that war.

Years ago, I also had the pleasure talking to this Korean War vet who told me he was saved by Chinese Soldiers when the North Koreans tried to execute the American POWs. The Chinese soldiers yelled at the Koreans and told them to step down. A lot of crazy stories from that gentleman, I hope he is still well.

His action and sacrifice was indeed an unknown to the outside of China. Not only Huang Jiguang, but also Qiu Shaoyun who was burned to death without giving away his comrades' position in the same war. Also, another Chinese soldier, Dong Cunrui who blew himself to destroy the enemy's bunker during the Chinese Civil War. Indeed any soldiers from any sides who sacrificed themselves deserve some respect. Two mistakes: Chinese soldiers were members of People's Volunteer Army (PVA), not People's Liberation Army and they never flew Chinese national flag, but only plain red flag and sometimes they flew North Korean flags.

He’s not the first one did that in modern Chinese History, staff sergeant Hsiung Qilao, 1st Company, 4th Regiment, 2nd Division, 52nd Army, during the Andong Campaign in Late 1946, 4th Regiment is block by the Communist MG Bunker, at the moment Squad Leader of 1st Company, Sergeant Hsiung was wounded, and think he might not make it, he crawled to the bunker, throw a grenade and jump on the barrel of the MG to make the way for he’s brothers, soon after, position near the bunker are all captured, the event filmed in Cold War era Movie “Sergeant Hsiung”.

In Vietnam, we have the exact same story in the form of Phan Đình Giót leaping himself onto a French pillbox to block machine gun fire. His sacrifice is sung for all eternity as an example to follow. Now the controversial thing is that many people especially southern boomers don't think its real. They think it's a fabricated or overexaggerated story for propaganda purposes. I'm inclined to believe them myself considering how Communism have been known for over the top propaganda. My own grandfather personal theory is that Giót got shot and died while charging with his comrades then they dump his body on a pillbox to block gun fire. It doesn't matter what the truth is as long as it conveniently makes for a good story.
