Billy Tipton was an American jazz musician and bandleader who performed across the country in the 1940s and 1950s. Born in Oklahoma in 1914, Tipton began playing piano and saxophone at a young age, and he soon developed a reputation as a skilled and versatile musician.
Assigned female at birth, he lived his life authentically as a man.
Despite facing significant challenges and discrimination as a transgender man in the mid-20th century, Tipton was able to build a successful career in the music industry, performing with some of the biggest names in jazz and swing music. He also formed his own band, the Billy Tipton Trio, which gained a devoted following and recorded several albums.
