It is incredible how important the illustration was during the wars, I cannot imagine what life was like during that period. Thanks again Pete! Keep up the great work !!

@@petebeard Great body of work, Pete. Nice to ad about Dutch Illustrator Anton Pieck who designed themepark De Efteling. To get his fairytale houses al rickety, he provided cases of beer to the contruction workers. For them to drink beforehand to get the construction work all sloping and awry. LOL

Thank you for including Pieck's work. It gave me goose bumps to briefly see De Eftling where my family took me several times as a kid in the Netherlands in the 1970s. 😍 As always every episode is an education for us, it's a wonderful channel that in the future should be preserved for art education.

Thanks once more for your continuing appreciation, and among others I'm considering adding Pieck to the terrifyingly long list of oillustrators waiting for a solo video. He deserves one, for sure.

Such a visual delight to delve into: another of Pete Beard's quartets. A diversity of styles, yet all equally appealing, beguiling, intriguing. My cherry on top of these four has to be Anton Pieck - the ease, with which he produces whimsical one moment, dark and threatening the next, dancing between a dazzling abundance of styles is captivating. Thank you.

Hi Neal and thanks for your encouragement. It's always good to know that I'm getting through to people. And I took the liberty of seeing if I could find some work by you online. If you're the Neal Garvin who's creating those hotrod/day of the dead visual collisions I really like them. You must be a fan of Rick Griffin.

pete beard Ha! That is me, and I do love Rick Griffin, but I’ve since moved into drawing mostly women with an eye towards fashion illustration. I mostly post on Instagram now, and part of my current interest in the female form was from one of your videos featuring Russell Patterson, who I’m now a big fan of. Thanks again!

The work of Paolo Garretto is so simple on one hand but so sophisticated on the other. It creates such impact but with such little force.
@petebeard2 жыл бұрын
Hello and that's a sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with. The Italians seem to have been masters of that approach because of the impact of futurism, which I think no other country really bought into.
@BlueBaron33392 ай бұрын
The desire to live in another time is universal though usually brief. But Anton Pieck's approach to his art is another matter. He certainly wasn't hiding from the world at all. Hence his resistance work during the war. Rather he lived on his own terms. Damn, I admire that! And it hasn't gotten any easier. Not that it ever was.

Anton Piecks' work was pleasing to look at. I found myself pausing & looking longer at his layouts. He also had a fantastic watercolor style. I had never heard of him in the states. Sad too because he could've been an influence for me with his style.

Thanks to a referral from a friend I found your video's. Wow, do I have some catching up to do! I love your video's. Even though I am a photographer (not an illustrator) I find them inspiring. I'd like to add a little to your narrative on Anton Pieck: The photo's of the Efteling Theme park show a few structures that have not been drawn / designed by Anton Pieck. The six swans story and the castle like structure (Symbolica) were fairly recently designed by Sander de Bruijn, who, like his predecessor at the Efteling Ton van de Ven, is an illustrator who closely follows Anton Piecks' style. Enough nitpicking, I am going to spend a few days watching your video's discovering all these amazing artists. Thank you!
@petebeard3 жыл бұрын
Hello and welcome to the channel. I hope you continue to get something out of the various videos. I didn't know about the others involved in the Efteling and it won't be the first - or last - time I'll have used the occasional wrong image. But in my defense I don't actually claim those specific aspects of the theme park to be his so I don't feel too guilty.

Hey I don’t know if you’ll read this, but when you talked about Paolo Garretto, there’s a illustration at 12:30 that’s the exact same image as you talked about Miguel Covarrubias at unsung heroes of illustration part 11. Is this a mistake? I’m just curious.
@petebeard4 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for pointing that out. I checked and it's credited to Garretto. I hate it when I slip up particularly as the only way to put it right is to upload a new video. But I'll mention it in the description box of unsung 11.
@kendavies99914 жыл бұрын
Thanks for another very enjoyable video. Can I be a bit cheeky and make a request for a piece about the cartoonist Trog (aka Wally Fawkes). He's certainly a hero - he's one of mine anyway - but it may be a stretch to say he's unsung. Aplogies if you've already covered him in an earlier video.
@petebeard4 жыл бұрын
Hello Ken and thanks for the appreciation. It certainly isn't cheeky to suggest any illustrator, but in the case of Fawkes he's actually too recent to qualify for the unsung heroes series. My cut off point is 1910 and although it means ignoring some later talents I had to limit the scope of the videos - as it is there are still more to do than I've already done. But I really should have featured him in the art of the cartoon series. If only I could repair the videos once they were uploaded...
@kendavies99914 жыл бұрын
Hi Pete. Thanks for your reply. Trog was an inspiration for my early ambition to be a cartoonist. I've just retired after 40 years in IT, so that ambition was not not fulfilled, although maybe there's still time. One of the great joys of watching your videos has been discovering what a golden age of black and white the early to mid twentieth century was. So many gifted artists active at that time. Eric Fraser's work, for instance, was a revalation. Going back to Trog, you can definitely see what his influences were, although i don't want to understate his originality.
