Here's another batch of forgotten illustrators you'll hopefully find interesting and inspirational. In order of appearance...Warwick Goble, Thomas Theodor Heine, Robert Lawson, Robert Duvoisin, John Falter.

I still have my greatly treasured copy of The Story of Ferdinand. In my family since before my birth in the early 1960's this book profoundly influenced me as a small boy when it was first read to me. I was transfixed by the beauty of its illustrations. I hung on to it and have returned to enjoy it regularly through my life, sharing it with both my own children along the way. And did I forget to stop and smell the flowers. Thank you Robert Lawson and thank you pete beard.

Hello again and many thanks for your comment about this video. I must confess that Lawson was entirely new to me when I started making these videos, and as with quite a few others his work has enriched my later life. I found out he illustrated Aesops Fables re-written by Munro Leaf, and they are spectacularly good monochrome images.

Thank you - of course I recognize Lawson and Duvoisin! But Falter I don't remember at all. I enjoy seeing the different illustrative styles linked to their historical times - I am impressed that these artists showed their talents early on, and kept on with their work throughout their lives ~ and I enjoy the music you've paired with your narrative ~

Hello again and thanks again. Regarding the music most of it is just downloaded from my youtube creators page. I'd prefer to use specific chosen tracks but copyright is problematic so I do my best with what I get get that isn't copyrighted. And some of it isn't that bad.

@@petebeard a hero and a treasure, I say this sincerely as a statement of objective fact this series is unique and clearly a labor of love. Have you considered doing an episode about Krazy Kat’s creator George Herriman? He’s far from an unknown and yet not as well known as one would think considering the impact of his work.

@@antekolejniczak3592 Hello again, and I really am very grateful for your appreciation. Regarding Herriman and Krazy Kat he is featured in unsung heroes 30, and also makes an appearance in the history of cartoons series. I'm a great admirer and he will probably get a video to himself somewhere down the line. In case you are not aware there is a list of the first 100 instalments of unsung heroes and who is in each one at the end of video100.

Hello John - in that case you might want to check out the work of Henrique Alvim Correa. He's frequently (and incorrectly) cited as the first to illustrate Wells' book.

Hello and thanks for your commitment to the channel. There's a very good reason you haven't encountered the work of Noel Sickles in the series, which is that until now I'd never heard of him. @petebeard5 жыл бұрын
Hello again. I'd never heard of Falter until I made the video. My theory is that artists who are hidden in the shadow of another similar figure who gets all the attention - in this case Rockwell - are undervalued by art historians. Just a theory though.

As many of these illustrators and artists started out by doing caricature drawing, I wonder if it served the same sort of role in inspiring young artists that comic strips and comic books did later as they became more and more popular!

@petebeard4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. I've been an admirer of Charles Bragg ever since I saw some of his original art in a gallery in America in the seventies. And I would love to feature him...but he was born too late to get into the unsung hero series ( I have to have a cutoff point as I'd really like to finish the series before I fall off my perch) and to date I haven't created a video he would easily fit into. Maybe I'll come up with something though. He certainly doesn't get the attention he deserves. Never say never...

Hi again. And there will definitely be a video including Virgi Finlay - but I dont know when. Technically he is just outside the qualifying dates to be an unsung hero but I'm almost certainly going to do a collection of those who just miss being included. I really like this series and admire the skill that Pete has used to research and present these talented illustrators. As someone with a hearing problem I do not like the voice over the background piano music, as it is difficult for me to focus on what is being said. I may abandon the series because of this, which is a shame. Am I alone in this?
@petebeard2 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for the comment -it's appreciated. Im sympathetic to your problem with the soundtrack as I too have less than great hearing. But the vast majority of viewer comments indicates they find the music adds to the overall quality of the videos. I invariably watch videos and films with the subtitles on, and that gets round the problem for me pretty well. I'd hate to lose a dedicated viewer...

@@petebeard Pete, thanks for the personal reply. I understand your decision based on majority viewer feedback. I'll go with the subtitles. Thanks for the tip. Hi again and I'm glad you'll stick around.
