I always love when SNL has an explosion of graphic violence out of nowhere. They do it rarely so it's more impactful, like in that Dead Poets skit and the ceiling fan.

It actually works a lot like that. Lorne calls (or at least used to call) these the "ten to one" sketches, because he assumed at 12:50 AM, most people would have gone to sleep, so that's where they stuck the weirdest or most niche sketches. Some of SNL's most famous sketches, like "More Cowbell" was a "ten to one" sketch.

Which is odd, because according to "The Simpsons" and their SNL spoof "Tuesday Night Live" (yeah, real subtle), the last half hour is a real garbage dump. After seeing a lot of SNL episodes spanning from the "Not Ready for Primetime" era to now (and, yes, I am including the godawful sixth season, the weird, audience-alienating 11th season, and the boring except for Weekend Update 20th season [though seasons 11 and 20 weren't that awful, even if Weekend Update was the bright spot]), I've come to the conclusion that an SNL episode's quality depends a lot on who's hosting and whether or not they can work with the host to make the show funny. Yes, the cast members and writers are important in this equation too, but I've seen good hosts do bad episodes and bad hosts do good episodes.
