It's scary to think how much better of a scorer Bird woulda been if they had the three point line in his high school and college days. Bird had to develop the three point shot while he was in the NBA.
@ContrarianCorner
@ContrarianCorner Ай бұрын
So true. None of they guys from that era ever practiced threes growing up. Even when they introduced the 3-point line, it took MANY years before teams actually started using it as an offensive strategy. Shooting threes was still quite rare during Bird's whole career.

@@ContrarianCornerNot quite so. These guys are a little younger than I am. We grew up watching the old ABA, which had a 3 point line. Dr. J came from the ABA.

Some background. The Celtics and Lakers rivalry goes all the way back to the 1950s. Where the Lakers lost seven times in the NBA championship to the Celtics (1959, 1962, 1963, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969). "7 TIMES!" Jerry West, one of the greats, played on several of those Lakers teams. And he is the only Finals MVP that was on the losing team. The Lakers back then had the misfortune of playing in an era where Bill Russell was on the Celtics. The next time that these two teams faced each other was in the 1984 NBA championship with Bird and Magic. In game 3, the Lakers pounded the Celtics 137-104. Bird called his teammates a bunch of "sissies". I suspect that Bird had another word in mind for his teammates, but there were several microphones in front of him. The series goes 7 games and the Lakers lost again. Jerry West was the general manager of the Lakers and must have felt like it was Deja Va. The Lakers finally beat the Celtics the next year. Back in the 1980s, Magic and Bird didn't want to play on the same team, they wanted to play against the best (each other). This is just my opinion, an old man of 68, of Larry Bird as a basketball player. I first saw him on the local cable TV when I got to the Boston area in 1980. Watched the Celtics vs Showtime vs the Bad Boys vs MJ. And many other great players-teams from the 1980s. Followed the Celtics until he retired. Larry started as a Power Forward and moved to Small Forward the next year when McHale showed up. I think that he could have played either guard position. He could play down low, mid range or past the 3 point line. Magic and Bird both showed how to play team basketball with their amazing passing skills. And he averaged 10 rebounds a game in his career. Shooting, passing and rebound: check. Finally, he was the free safety (football) on defense. He was constantly looking to steal the ball, not only from his man, but from anyone else on the court. If there was a lose ball, Larry would dive head first to get it. PS Being one of the best trash talkers, that's just icing on the cake.

If bird isn't first he's a close second to Michael Jordan, Larry was a complete player he could shoot from anywhere, not just the paint where MIke and Lebron scoreda a ,lot from the paint, Larry fed his team mares , never a statistics guy, if he played today he'd be getting 30 to 40 every game. They say he wasn't athletic, have you seen him play, come on man, look at some of those passes, he's athletic, the most complete player ever!!

There's a quote out there, but I cannot remember who said it ... ?maybe James Worthy? Anyway the quote: Jordan made you look SLOW Larry made you look STUPID I think Jordon was a flashier player, incredible speed, jumps...etc. But I also think he was a little more stingy with the ball, and he wasn't thinking so far ahead in the game that Larry could do. Larry seemed to have the ability to know like 20 seconds ahead of time, what Everyone on the court would be doing, where they would be positioned and he had a knack for instantly adjusting his game play at time when things were not going normal...such as when he landed on his butt, got up and then intercepted a ball by Isaiah, in the playoffs, passed the ball to DJ, and they won that game at the last second. He just didn't hang back and let that ball come into play...he was already running for his spot to catch it before Isaiah threw the ball in. In looking at Jordan's stats and Larry's and seeing how good Larry's stats were and knowing he play like his last 7 years with severe back pain, plus another back injury that required surgery and double Achilles tendon surgery...I will always wonder what Larry could have done if not for his issues with pain. I'm a 61 woman btw, and I use to watch Larry play basketball on t.v. back in the day...I especially love when he and Magic faced each other. Those were some great games. .

One of the greatest coach's of the game(Pat Riley)once said "If I have to choose a player to take a shot to save a game I'd choose Michael Jordan...If I have to choose a player to take a shot to save my life... I'd take Larry Bird!". Bird was a masterful basketball player. His game is ageless. And on top of that, he is the best trash talker in the history of the game and beyond, and he back it up each and every time. Bird is the Muhammed Ali of basketball.

The First EVER Three Point Contest Was In 1986. So Larry Won The 1st In 1986, The 2nd 1987 & The 3rd One In 1988. Not To Sure If Anyone Sense Had Won It 3-Times In A Row. Yes Some Won It 3-Times But I Don't Think Anyone Has Done It 3-Times In A Row.?. Larry Never Signed Up After Those Three Times. There Are Reason's For It But I'm Not Going To Get Into That Right Now. Here's A Funny Kind Of Story. In Bird's 1st Year 1986 Contest. Some Of His Teammate's Made A Bet With Larry That He Can't Win It. So After He Won It. The Next Game With His Teammate's, He Went Around With His Writing Pad To All The One's That Lost Betting Against Him. He Told Some That Was In The Lobby, If You Don't Have Your Money On Ya Right Now, I'll Wait Go Back To Your Room And Get It. Then A Couple That Wasn't In The Lobby He Went To Thier Rooms To Get It.🤣😂🤣😂🤣

The fight was started by Larry’s trash talking. Every time Bird would score, he told Dr J his score vs Dr J’s. When it got around 42-6, Bird told Dr J that he needed to retire. That was when Dr J went off. I was so shocked because Dr J was one of the gentlemen of basketball and you never saw him swing on another player. Nobody watching in those days knew Bird was such a savage shit talker. Larry was a better team player than young Jordan but Michael Jordan was the most gifted player of his era. The Celtics swept the Bulls both times they met in the finals but that was young Mike and not the Jordan with a handful of championship rings.
