Although I am grateful for your video I am saddened by the need for big tall walls around the "gated communities" or even the need for "gated communities" which in my view are the warning signs of petty theft. As a Panamanian, I am ashamed of that. Also, on the way towards San Miguelito, the garbage on the side of the road. Panama, we can do better! Aside from that. Panama is a great place and has a lot of things going for itself. It must address the problem of opportunistic crime such as petty theft and the garbage problem in some areas (el problema de la basura).

I think you'll find gated communities in every country from Canada down to Argentina. On the other hand, the former Canal Zone neighborhoods are completely ungated and have some of the most expensive and beautiful areas in the whole city. Does that mean the city has no petty crime?

@@guillermogouldburn763 When I was a kid in Panama there was no such thing as "gated communities", except for, of course, the Canal Zone, who would have an armed guard at the gates of the Zone, some of whom shot and killed Panamanians kids attempting to raise a flag over their own territory within those gates. The day was the 9th of January and it became a National Holiday, a national day of mourning and remembrance. Those were also the days in which Jim Crow reigned supreme within that gated community called The Canal Zone. And this is how Jim Crow was exported to Panama. And thank God it remained within those gates. That was the only gated community at the time. Those gates opened to the rest of Panama in the year 2000. But now we see some gated communities pop up here and there throughout the republic. Most popped up immediately after the U.S. Bombing, Invasion and Occupation that took place in 1989 and 1990 and the mayhem and anarchy that ensued. Panama has made great strides since then, as one can see, but the legacy of such gated communities has remained.

@@fanfare100 You probably grew up in Panama during the same time period I did. You have to admit that the level of prosperity seen in Panama these days was unimaginable back then. Some people living in the country with the highest GDP per capita in the whole of Latin Ameirica will be pretty wealthy, and those people, unfortunately, become targets of crime. Hence gated communities, not just in Panama, but across the Americas. But look at Costa del Este, you can go anywhere you want there and that place is full of rich people. So PTY is pretty safe.
