I bought one of these when they first came out years ago (welded wire version). It drew some hoots when I first put it on my mandolin. I'm a quiet player and always had problems being heard in a jam. But the Tonegard did help a lot. It wasn't long before they started showing up on mandolins all over the place. I've had several mandolins, but still use the same Tonegard. One caution--keep an eye on the rubber tube cushions that hold it in place.

Thanks guys, I didn't even know these existed! The first thing I noticed was the resonance on the mandolin, holy cow that made a big difference. The guitar got louder, very obvious, and the depth of tone was really induced. good stuff. Keep on smiling.

Very clear tonal sound with it on there. So the volume was increased by quite a bit 🤔 Great video. 👍

I think these would be more evident on higher end guitars like Bedell, Furch or Bourgeois. Where the backs are actually voiced. I'd be curious how these work on Bourgeois x braced backs as they are REALLY in depth voiced at our shop. Maybe not so much to like a taylor or Martin where the backs are as stiff as possible. Just my .02 but my curiosity is peaked! I could hear a bot more clarity and punchiness, great playing as always fellas !

That is an impressive change, there were moments where the difference wasn't super obvious, yet with certain techniques and attacks the difference was astounding.

The sound through the "Video" is compressed as part of the encoding to make the video files smaller and easier to stream. This lessons the real dynamic difference between the with or without tonegard samples. They really are more dramatic in person. :-)

Great idea! Of course, any good classical/acoustic guitarist or mandolinist already knows that you angle your instrument so its back doesn't touch your body but that's not always possible so a thing like this should be really useful for many. It's not true it will improve the tone of *any* acoustic instrument though. It really only works for instruments with proper good quality solid wood backs. Laminate backs don't really resonate much anyway so there is little to gain for those.

There might be a method to measure the sound power coming out of the guitar with and without the Toneguard. (DECIBEL METER: Setup might depend on location and background noise)

I appreciated the text on the screen telling whether the guard was on or off the instrument. But then that stopped showing during strumming. So I watched it again and saw that the tabs on the guard were visible from the front.

I believe the difference would also be dependent on the specific instrument. I have some mandolins that the tonegard does nothing for and others that it’s a game changer having it on.

The difference in an unmuted back, is most noticable in Flamenco guitars. So thin and light, the whole guitar vibrates like a drum when picked, keeping the back free to vibrate and minimizing all contact in the knee support makes a huge difference,.its like unmuting a drum.

Idk if I missed it but on a mandolin it also helps you to keep the instrument more stable while you are playing. I will never play another live show without one.

I've just tried this idea on my Walden D351 dreadnought... and by holding the guitar away from my body I can hear more volume and definitely a better low end sound... however I also recorded it on my tablet and could only just hear a slight tone difference.... I'm not sure how much this has to do with where the players ears are in regard to the soundhole and guitar in general... but I'm going to set up a better recording system and have a play with this idea. it's fascinating and takes me back to my uni days when I was doing some unusual projects in the acoustics lab! As the saying goes... 'I wanna believe!'....

Considering that the back of a carved top mandolin is tuned to a certain frequency, having a tone-card makes total sense. I have a very nice handmade F5 style Mando that is loud without it, but I've been to a jam and had somebody show up with an Eastman (still great mandos) and easily out volume me... never mind my lousy picking techniques.

Only point of reference I have is to lift my instrument away from my body which with wearing the strap is held high on my body breast hight. So if I lift the instrument from my body which I never thought to try before now; well just to say there is a huge difference in tone. When sitting as normal the tone is cut right down but holding it free of my body and resonating the strings it is very much louder the richer tone. It is a ukulele probably I will need to make something for myself because now I heard the dirrerence how can I play without it.

TV speaker are developed to reduce both high and low frequencies to center towards the human voice. They aren’t a good representation of the entire frequency range. Try listening with good headphones. Or simply try holding your acoustic guitar close against your stomach and then pull it away from you, not touching your body. You will hear a difference.
