I think the message is that it is not the circumstances that are enlightened but the response to the circumstances that can enlighten. However, every circumstance is the position of awareness that engenders the specific enlightened responses. You can't swim in the ocean if you're walking on land. Swimming in the ocean and walking on land can both be accomplished in an awake and aware way though. That is the Way. Also it's more a martial arts thing you experienced. People of power could do anything they want to you so deserve respect. Awareness and Awareness of power aren't the same thing.

I see a lot of comments here about how they're not real sadhus because they're smoking and such. I'd just like to point out that the beauty of our sanatana dharma is that there is no one size fits all, Every individual's path is tailored personally. Moreover, we are encouraged to question every teaching, inquire about it and discuss with the guru. As that nepali sadhu said, being a sadhu means distancing yourself away from everything that binds you (which btw need not be physically distancing but also just realising the maya while still living and thriving in it, as Ben said). This includes distancing yourself from the duality of nature. Life and death, good and bad, are all the same. People look at the actions of a sadhu and insult him, but they don't think like a sadhu, and thus judge him with their limited mindset. In the end of the day, all a sadhu has, wants, and thinks of is that one supreme, the one who is absolutely free of all boundations, i.e. the source. The goal is to be one with that source, and therefore to be free. So free that even the notion of being free doesn't bind you, that you can therefore be bound if you wish, and unbind whenever you wish. Hard to imagine, but even "doing so whenever you wish so" doesn't bind you when you are truly free. As Bruce Lee said, the best form is no form. (Or something like that idk) So please don't look at a sadhu and judge him so poorly, for he is the one who had the courage and determination to leave his identity behind and go after something that's hard for most to even fathom the concept of, myself included. There are fakers for sure, but please don't judge that based on your perspective, just let sadhus do the sadhuing, and continue on your own path. * When we are born, our soul is locked in time & space. So unless we unlock our soul from the body, we wont be able to connect to the source... To unlock that, you will have to find a guru who teaches Yoga like Kundalini Yoga or Kriya Yoga etc...as this kind of Yoga may be more useful for you as compared to Bhakti Yoga. The Current Akhada or Ashram that you visited must be following "Bhakti Yoga" which is a devotional seva or service to Devi & Devtas. Good luck...

My parents have been under a guru for their entire lifetime. They've had experiences that they can't describe in words. Finding a guru is tough. I'm also on my own spiritual journey. I've come accross popular gurus, foundations, and I'm trying to go through all of it, seeing what makes most sense to me. Not sure what advice I could give you, but please keep looking! Always question things, always keep seeking, do not fall into any norms, if you see something doesn't make sense but the masses are following it - bolt out of there. I hope you dont get sucked up in fake gurus / fake spiritual practices. Try, see if they work, if they dont, move on. Good luck

Brother you don't need to smoke , you can just medidate and do yoga with beautiful mantras with their meaning to get close to nature .hinduism doesn't have strict set rules we can choose our path . ultimately we must get close to nature and do good karma

Seems like those guys are misguided bums who think they are holy men who have renounced the material world (sanyasa). Sanyasis must take up and follow strict vows like maintaining purity of body, mind, speech (no smoking!), not becoming angry or emotional, eating food only after begging, etc. Importantly, sanyasis must also have a spiritual goal.... I wonder if they have any!? As you rightly mentioned in the video, today's society is too materialistic, anti-nature, anti-human. So we must seek alternate meanings and newer paths in life that are sustainable, less conflicting, more 'human',.....,??,....., etc. Not making fun of those Sadhus, but it seems they are only living a carefree life in an 'akhada' which has comfortable boarding and lodging facilities. Are they enlightened or are they at least digging into any of the deep mysteries of life?

Dear Ben, Be Sugar (seeker), Ants (Guru) will come automatically. Focus on the quest. Pray the universe to send a Guru for you.. There are 99% fake gurus around you. Only true guru will know the importance of true student.. So if you become true student, He will come to you, no need to go in search of him. For that don't waste time in searching. sit at one place, your home, country and pray. Your prayer will be answered. Searching and wandering will drain your money and interest. Untoward experiences will demotivate you. But you will have to pass through these things. Don't get discouraged. This will be your test. Universe will check how serious you are... So don't exhaust yourself. There are many ways that Guru appears in front of you..Physically, in dreams, In sound.. Just keep praying and chanting mantra.. whatever you select.. Best Luck Hari Om!

Yoga is so muxh more than asana, if you still in India, may i advise you to go visit the Shree Swaminarayan temple of Bhuj under the Nar-narayan Amazing place and you would get to see many sadhus and then eventually connect to one of them by your own choice. you will connect the dots and for free, they dont take money at all

Buddy, this is not spirituality, smoking weed and all. Please do not fall far all this. Explore Advaita Vedanta, the highest Indian philosophy. Guru is not out there. Self alone is the guru which takes up a form to take towards itself. When the time is right guru will come on his own. Listen to Swami Sarvapriyananda lectures on "Who Am I?" listen to talks of Sri Ramana Maharshi. You are, what you are seeking. You are the Truth.

This is not what you were told to do by the priest in Karnataka. You are at the wrong place as far as your goal is concerned. Have patience, don't go on the wrong path. Smoking inside temples is definitely not Indian culture for a start.

Rather than searching this way, better to go to any ISKCON Temple nearby. There u will find meaning of sanathana dharma through Bagavat Gita and Srimad Bagavatham. U can get initiated there also and many foreign ppl also serve there.

U can easily serve as a monk over there without the need of education qualification.. But first u have to serve there for multiple months and make good friends with the monks over there.. Try your best! All the best God bless

My friend.. I understand ur struggles, in finding a guru. Please be very very careful. Especially the north of India. The temples there.. Kashi, Ujjain, Vaishno devi etc are timeless. But unfortunately, the ppl u will meet there, are a sign of the times we live in... U will meet a lot of charlatans. Fake ppl. Worse, ppl who see ur a foreigner, thus making u a target to extort money from. A supposed guru who doesn't see ur sincerity and easily judges u wen he finds ur a blogger... Another, like in this video who smokes weed... Steer clear of these my friend.. They don't seem to be Gurus and /or they don't seem to be right for u.the north of India are filled with charlatans and fake Gurus and a foreigner like u are in danger to be taken advantage of. 99 percent will be fake or not right for u. But do not be disappointed or disheartened. In our lore, it is said tht wen the disciple is ready, the guru will appear... U need to be ready urself to receive the Guru. U need to read some scriptures and try to understand them. U need knowledge. Not only to understand the religion, but also to have clarity of wat exactly ur seeking... Nd to distinguish the fake ones. And word of advice.. These north Indians will not take u seriously if u mention ur a blogger... Suggest you keep tht to urself. Only reveal it to that person who eventually becomes ur guru... U must read two autobiographies which are a must if u plan to start a spiritual quest in India. Apprenticed to a Himalayan master by Sri m. Nd autobiography of a yogi by yoga nanda. Without atleast this minimum knowledge, my friend, u are in danger of running from pillar to post, all over India.... Wandering like a headless chicken...And.. If any guru u meet, asks for donations or money, Run!! They are fake! If you receive links to videos of ashrams in India... STEER CLEAR. well known ashrams like isha yoga, art of living, iskon temples.. Don't go there! Steer clear of all them popular ashrams. U will not be enlightened there nd u will feel so dejected u may even abandon the path altogether. Do email me for help.. If they are sincere and genuine , they will tell you u where to go nd hu to meet. . But u should have a high degree of suspicion and u should know how to test ur guru too. . U have to use every resource at ur disposal with the internet and stuff. Bro... If u are really sincere, I would suggest you go to Madanapalle in Andhra Pradesh and meet with Sri m. He is not my guru. He was in my shortlist of ppl to meet in my search fr a guru,but I met my guru before meeting Sri m. He said was my inspiration fr searching fr a guru in the first place. His autobiography is must read. Of all the gurus in the media, he seems to be the only genuine person. Never asks money, wich is, in my mind, the first nd foremost sign of a genuine guru. He himself says it. . Openly will tell u if u r suited to his teachings. He teaches kriya yoga. What's more, unlike the fake guru's, he is always accessible. Those are his guarantees. Om swami(srividya guru, based in Himachal Pradesh, bhadrika ashram) is another genuine guru. Iam from kerala, South India. I feel u can find gurus in south India more easily. Asking temple priests and ashrams in kerala about gurus in the specific path or ishta devatha u are interested in, like Devi, Shiva, Vishnu etc,is the safer thing to do... Because the priests are more god fearing nd less cheaters like in the north. This is my experience. Anyways, What path are u actually looking for? A Guru in kriya yoga? Sri Vidya tantra?.. I feel u should visit temples nd mutts in South India. Religious Ppl there are less fake and are more god fearing. U are less likely to be cheated. I am from kerala. Gurus u can meet, who are not fake, are Sri M, at madhanapelle, in Andhra Pradesh. Om swami, bhadrika ashram, in Himachal Pradesh. I suggest you to read their autobiographies and make up ur mind. They are not my gurus. They were on my shortlist to meet in my search. Thankfully I met my guru before I met them. If you want to meet my guru, he's malayali, but language shouldn't be a problem.
