Chris- I went to photo school/1978...and it was two years of only 4x5. My first rig was a Cambo; my second a Sinar F. Naturally after about 10 years of commercial work, I morphed exclusively to MF and 35mm. But with digital today....it's so fun- the QUALITY possible, without the hassle of the older stuff. I'm GLAD I experienced it first hand- but for me, I don't miss it- but Appreciate it for having done so. So....I'd love to see/hear more about this camera that you have. I love the tools....and the stories behind them.

Got myself a Cambo Actus (basic) last year - extended rail & bellows - absolute dream to use. I even Identified the Fuji GFX 50R as my upgraded camera - but eventually settled for the APS format - will definitely upgrade when I can. The Cambo Actus system is just about THE ONLY kit you'll need - Everything becomes modular with zero redundancy !!...... Top-Notch move ..... you'll love it
@alexlouder

do you regret not having full rear standard movements?
@davelewis5661
@davelewis5661 5 ай бұрын
@@alexlouder - good question... The short answer is "No" - the longer one includes the reason .... I'm not a professional with a business - but I work to pro standards. I HAD a Horseman 4x5 (plus a Toyo Field A-II) and manufactured a modular back-plate to mount my digital camera; the only rear movements I used were XY not base-rotational or axial tilt, as I mostly photograph small things - predominantly nature-based things (bones, lichens, invertebrates etc) - so a rear perspective control isn't much used - unlike in product shots. So, while it was desirable to have the Full Monty - I couldn't justify the cost. I still kept my LgFmt lenses (well, most of them) - and quickly worked out that I could re-mount them with Cannon EOS rings and use just ONE lens-board - each lens cost under £15 to mount - so I've a full set of lenses - and can mount other whacky optics ( I also use RSM microscope lenses the same way) - with the rail movement controlled by micrometer shoes attached to Arca Swiss plates - I have coarse & fine adjustments - so it works for both normal and micro photography including stacking. Best move I ever made - and all the old kit paid for it. Winner !

Having photographed many thousands of objects in museum collections I have longed for a "digital view camera system" that did not require the cost of a Phase or leaf back. The cultural heritage sector of professional photography at least where I'm located is very budget limited. Cheers.

Very nice. I shot Fujifilm campaigns and Fujifilm bodies for a very long time. Had prototypes in 2016. The GFX produced unmatched image quality - perfect for a studio. Tethering was buggy using Tether Tools. Area51 cables seem to work best. Unfortunately, I sold my GFX kits as the system couldn’t keep up with my commercial assignments and harsh shooting environment. Awesome tool but not the correct tool for my clientele. Happy Holidays!

Hey Scott, do you think it would be possible to do a comparison between the new Fuji body and the Canon and/or a Phase One? I remember you did a head-to-head comparison on a pineapple between the 5dsR and a Phase One where the differences in color and tone were pretty obvious. It would be very interesting to see how the Fuji sensor compares with everything else held constant. I think most interesting part of that test would be to see how much time it takes in post to get each image to an acceptable level. If I remember the Canon and Phase One were similar in the end, but the Canon image took an extra hour of processing to achieve the same results.

I've been thinking about going in the same direction as you are, however, how would you go about focus stacking with a view camera like that? Am I correct in assuming you would need to move the rail system forward and back to achieve a stack? Also, please let us know how the live view tethering feature works with that gfx and capture one. I've read quite a bit of complaints regarding tethering instability while using live view.

I feel like adding a Cambo camera to my Nikon D850 would give me flexibility in landscape photography. The portability could be an issue but I'm not worried about set up time as I tend to shoot slowly. I frame up and often have to wait for the right weather conditions. Speaking of weather, any thoughts of Cambo kit in snow or desert heat conditions? 4x5 shooters make it work in all conditions so there must be protective covers for the Cambo gear. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Interesting video Scott. The funny thing is that I've done the same on the other side of the world, not because I needed to or was chasing ad campaigns, but because I've become bored working with models, creative portraiture, and general work that pays the bills. Tech is changing so quickly, I miss my film-making days of all those global campaigns, now driven online by influencers. Maybe get a few feature projects happening.. :) See how it goes, good luck, you'll wish you'd gone to Mirrorless earlier, as now I can use my iPhone 15promax with a beast cage and an EF lens and shoot cinematic video in pro-res, only the pixel peeps would know the diff!!!

It's a logical step up to the Actus MV & GFX 100s. Ok the Fuji doesn't have an ovf, but you can use focus peaking & focus magnification for critical MF with the evf. The evf will grow on you. As for a backup camera the 100s is hugely discounted at the moment, Fuji are clearing stock for the Fuji GFX 100sii, which will be launched early next year, so the price of s/h 100s will drop even further. So the Actus you are to put together, is it an Actus G with fine focus on the rear standard plus the base tilt option?

Ok. If the whole set up works then it’s all good. But it’s not necessarily easy.. what I worry about is the camera sensor, can it render those step angels when lenses being swinged, tilted and shifted? Is the sensor actually made to handle that? Will your lenses be sharp enough for that bigger and higher resolution sensor? Maybe, eventually you’ll be forced to get those Rodenstock digital lenses. During the film era I used to shoot with Sinar and Arca Swiss the latter was fantastic camera. At the end of it I contemplated getting a digital back but the more I looked into it the more complicated and difficult it became and much slower workflow. I’m glad I didn’t go that route, canons tilt shift lenses for me is a fast effortless workflow. That said I admire you and all the other photographers who work it out with medium format technical cameras and all the accessories to it.

nice choice, but can you do a "how to" for it, as the Cambo video (TVCM v2) has Juul using it, but as a picture in picture, or at a fast pace, so would be good to have a detailed one, also maybe an assembly video, as to combine each element is a process, selecting lenses, adaptors, cameras/backs and final assembly of the pieces; also as not very much is on the xl version (the replacement of the ULTIMA series of monorail cameras) so some guides of what these are, how to assemble, etc. would be a great help.

Do a search for the Wikipedia article called "Flange Focal Distance." (Links are not allowed in YT comments). You'll see that the RB67 needs 112mm, while a common SLR mount, EF, needs 44mm. That means you need to get the mount of the RB lens 68mm from the flange of the EF camera body to focus at infinity. The Cambo Actus MV web page "Technical Details" shows a maximum bellows draw of 298mm (which is huge, by the way), but not a minimum. It's almost certainly less than 68mm, so at least with an EF body, you can probably focus at infinity. Most 35mm SLRs have a flange distance of under 50mm. Therefore, the answer to your question is almost certainly "yes."

One of my greatest personal achievements was shooting a small rural private school group shot on an asp-c Canon 70d and have that image used on a bilboard for over 1 year. This proves a lot of camera misconceptions as wrong. IE: One does not NEED a large megapixel image to blow up to an image over 48 feet diagnal. (If one hasnt seen a personal image blown up that large, i highly recommend it) Im sure you understand that whole viewing distance vs. 72 dpi vs. 300 dpi mess that a lot of people get hung up upon. Size basically comes down to viewing distance. Im sure climbing that ladder and inspecting pixels would be a mess, but who does that in the real world?
