Uonuma City, the most famous Uonuma-made Koshihikari production area in Japan, is one of the heaviest snowfall areas in Japan, and one of the reasons why Uonuma-made Koshihikari tastes so good is because of "snow meltwater".
The melted snow water from the Echigo Sanzan (Echigo Three Mountains) is "super-soft water," a blessing of nature that nurtures Uonuma's branded foods and is indispensable for processed products such as Koji Amazake (The malted sweet rice drink).Visitors can learn about the benefits of this water and the wisdom of the snow country through fieldwork in the fan-shaped area, factory tours, and local cooking experiences.
Uonuma City is also home to Japan's largest hydroelectric power plant, which generates the largest amount of electricity in Japan, and one of the largest man-made lakes in Japan, Okutadami Lake. This is another benefit of water. You can experience the grand scale of nature and water by trekking through Oze National Park on a sightseeing boat and bus with a nature guide to Ozenuma, the source of the water in Okutadami Lake. Weather permitting, you will be able to view the Cloud Waterfalls at Shiori Pass to experience at least once in your lifetime.
