People can't claim that it's the diesel loco behind doing the work anymore that diesel sounds like it's at idle, it really is only there for extra braking and power for the passenger cars.

in some video clips, it is assisting when needed. But when you get a steam locomotive moving, you have all the power, it's when you start from 0 it struggle. You see it from time to time on UK steam trains, where the diesel assist the steam up to a certain speed and after that, just hang on for dear life. But then those steam have to hold main line speed.

Mostly for PTC compliance, radio, brake pressure, and to assist if the main locomotive runs into a power issue. Also, serves as crew quarters.

Yay now 844 definitely isn't going to see anymore attention. History repeats with the UP steam program, a locomotive gets used less because another comes out, the "old" one begins to sit unused and tarped, the "new" helps a "stalled" freight, and people swarm the "new" one with so much admiration and attention that everyone slowly forgets about the others. Show 844 some love, harrass UP to fire it up, do anything before it becomes another 3985 story.

You're wrong that diesels at idle the Diesels therefore power for the electric and air brake in front there's only two diesels and they got stuck on the hill plus the big boy pushing and pull passenger cars train and the passenger cars weigh as much as the freight cars

No, it's not! It's all 100% from the Big Boy. The diesel is in idle mode powering the passenger cars let alone providing dynamic braking for 4014 plus it's also a backup in case 4014 has a breakdown. Get it?

4014 the steam train + the lead train. the 4015 is Big Boy's assist and only occasional assist, it is basic math: - the train weight around 11.000 tons! - Big Boy is rated at 3800 tons when climbing Cheyenne, but can do up to 9000 tons on flat ground. - The lead diesel can do +-8000 tons, the other diesel stalled out. - 4015 is just giving that little extra, ptc and power, and dynamic breaking. - Steam trains are weak at accelerating from 0 under load, but when they are moving.. no problem
