Gotta say I LOVE the audible enthusiasm people are showing for 4014! Wonder how many future railroaders were started on their path this day!

Neat, I just experienced the awesomeness of 4014 in Denver Colorado on Monday and Tuesday September 6-7 2021. A cousin and I drove 300 plus miles from Glorieta New Mexico on Monday morning to see and hear this classic for the very first time, and then watched it leave Denver for Cheyenne Wyoming on Tuesday morning. Thanks to Union Pacific and their restoration/operation crew s for saving this majestic lady for us descendants of those who rode the rails behind this treasure!! Like my father who traveled to Navy boot camp at the beginning of World War II, in a blacked out train pulled by a Big Boy.

I think you'll find UP have a complete traffic ban on all tracks during this sort of event. It's just too dangerous otherwise.

I was there! Great day. My only disappointment was that it didn't leave under it's own power. I was hoping for some of that classic steam action. Thanks for sharing the video.
@davidjacobs85585 жыл бұрын
guess they didn't want to be sued by people for being burned by exhaust steam from those cylinders.
@mrk10755 жыл бұрын
That would explain why I didn't hear that chug chug chug sound than. But I do have an older video of a steam engine the day I was at Union IL coming in on it's own power. I will look for that video and upload it soon.

It obviously is working, it is just that the engineer, Ed Dickens, doesn't need to have the regulator wide open to start the train.
@donkerouac37465 жыл бұрын
@Chardee MacDennis Actually, while the 3025 was used for hostling duties at times, most of the time it was used as a drag or load on the Big Boy with it's dynamic brakes engaged. It was never the primary traction. That's if you believe Ed Dickens and he should know!

I think all of the working steam engines have this status. Besides seeing 4014 with 844 in Cheyenne I've had the pleasure of catching 844 in Topeka, 3985 in Elmhurst, and Milwaukee Road 261 at Rochelle and each time there's been a huge crowd.
@04AirForceRam4 жыл бұрын
Saw it twice multiple times that day. Was at Rochelle, then saw it again when wr chased it on a side road for a few miles, and then once again when it was going over the bridge into Iowa. That was a fun day.

I really would have liked to been there that day, just to here all the radio chatter. I was lucky enough to see her and 844 together returning to Cheyenne after her maiden trip.

I was there and appear very briefly in this video. Loved Big Boy and the eastbound freight that preceded it. We made numerous new friends there. However, the crowd was unruly, obnoxious and out of control. The park and the Rochelle PD did a terrible job by not planning and not controlling the crowd. That will be my last visit to Rochelle! 🤬
@mrk10755 жыл бұрын
Kevin Christel Wow, I thought for the most part the crowd was well behaved. I didn’t see no pushing and shoving. But there was a lack of bathrooms. ☹️

AS great ambassadors as Ed and his crew are, it has to be frustrating to see people on the tracks and not heeding his repeated requests to stay back. Many dim bulbs standing IN the tracks. GEEZ

Why does the 4014 need a diesel behind it?
@donkerouac37465 жыл бұрын
@Chardee MacDennis The diesel was used for hostling duties where needed. At other times it was used as a load by running with it's dynamic brakes engaged. It did not supply tractive power. The Big Boy was meant to drag much heavier loads through the steep Watsach Mountains.
@donkerouac37465 жыл бұрын
@Chardee MacDennis Interesting. Clearly, the 4000 series was not meant for switching or hostling duties. What limits it from providing any useful traction presently and what remains to be done to make it fully functional?
@donkerouac37465 жыл бұрын
@Chardee MacDennis Odd. I based my assumptions on taping it running between West Chicago and Rochelle and in conversations with Ed Dickens at West Chicago. When it passed me out in the country at about 45 mph, the Big Boy was chugging away and the diesel was very quiet and produced no visible exhaust. ED said the diesel provided dynamic braking to provide a load as needed for the BB tests. I believe it was one of the crew who said they used the diesel for hostling/switching as the BB & tenders was poorly suited for such duties. I'm an electrical engineer, not a mechanical but it seems to me if you put 300 psi into the cylinders, the laws of physics say that you will get x amount of force on the piston and conversely the driving rods. Oh well, it should be a continuing education as time goes by.
