The 4-8-8-4 Big Boy is the largest steam engine ever built. Union Pacific Railroad recently spent two and a half years rebuilding and restoring 4014, so now one of them is operational! Immediately following restoration, it travelled to Utah to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first transcontinental railroad's completion. Shortly afterward it went on a trip all across the Midwest.
Ride along with us as we follow the train all the way from Butler, WI (a suburb of Milwaukee) to West Chicago, IL (a suburb of Chicago). We flew our drone where possible for an added perspective, and I've included maps to help show the location of the train.
Some of the footage we have here you won't find anywhere else. As far as I know, no one else was flying a drone or other aircraft over the Deval Diamond. No one was driving next to us as the train passed O'Hare Airport. That's some true Chicago pacing footage! And very few of us were up by the tracks entering the Global II Yard, a location that's normally off-limits.
