UP Cement Train Drops a Lunar Signal, Enters Balloon Track!

This cement train fauna between here in North Las Vegas, NV and Mojave, CA. I think it was abolished for a while, because I haven’t caught this move since before the pandemic. The lunar signal was definitely a plus…right time right place! Taken 4/6/24

Amazing that the siding is not protected by signals! Must not be utilized much. Very cool seeing the lunar signal!

It has a signal to get back out onto the main. This is a fairly new control point too. I think within the last 10 years.

Not a siding, but an industrial track. Spur is protected by the Lunar “restricting” signal. Letting the crew know they have to be operating at a speed that allows them to stop within half their range of vision short of anything and everything (other trains, equipment, derails, switches improperly lined, etc.) Being this industrial track is located at controlled point is an indication it is used an awful lot (enough to warrant the cost of signal installation). Lightly used spurs/industries are usually just a hand throw switch.

Besides this train, which is as-needed, fuel is also unloaded here, as well as anything transload related. I believe it’s switched daily, so yeah pretty busy.
