I've always wanted to find at least a photo of 3985 and 5511 double heading during their service years, there is video footage of 844 and 5511 which was neat to see.

It really surprises me that no Union Pacific 3800s survived into preservation. They could have at least kept 3800.

Very enjoyable operation analysis about the Union Pacific rr "Challenger" type locomotives during the steam era period, I am very glad that the 3977 and 3985 are still in existence today. I really like the "greyhound" paint scheme that is displayed on the UP 3977, that paint scheme is spectacular and it was very attractive looking during the late stage steam era.

I grew up in Wyoming, been across I-80 hundreds of times. I used to imaging the Challenger, Big Boy, 844 and the Turbines rolling along those tracks. That had to be a sight.

105 Challengers were build by ALCO between 1936 and '44, 103 were scrapped between 1956 and '61, only 2 were saved. #3977 and #3985

Just look at the PRR K4’s. The challengers had way better luck than them.
