Wait, where did that shroud come from? I thought the shroud looked like a huge tin can! Is that the original shroud?
@MidwestSirenProductions7 ай бұрын
The shroud seen here came from this siren; the baffles were bolted onto the skirts over the shroud. There was a bit of damage sustained when trying to cut off the bolts, but all in all, it's in surprisingly good shape for 95 years.

The Model/Type Mach. 3 is the smallest dual rotor siren in the original lineup, using the same 10.5 inch rotors that the Model 1 has. The Model 3 is essentially a dual rotor variant of the Model 1, but unlike the Model 1, the Model 3 has coding capabilities. The Model 3 makes use of two 10.5 inch rotors, and the siren was available in 9/9 or 12/12 port single tone, or 9/12 port dual tone. The siren is driven by a dual sided GE 3HP AC motor between the two rotors. The siren uses a tall cylindrical weatherproof housing, and each rotor/stator has two louvres that help project the sound both outwards and downwards. The siren also has a rainshield which both protects the siren itself and projects the sound from the upper rotor's intake. The Model 3 was available with coding dampers fixed to each intake, which could allow the siren to create coded pulse signals. These dampers were optional, and were designed to be easily added to or removed from the siren as required. The siren also used a mesh screen to protect each rotor. The Model 3 was successful, although not to the degree of the larger models.

Oh okay, I look forward to hearing this siren if it does get power again & am looking forward to hearing the windown this siren makes with the 3 & 4 port undertones from the rotors. In future since I got a Qidi X-Max 3D printer a while back with a 10" by 12" print bed & I plan to re use it again in the future. I'm thinking of making sirens with 9 to 10" wide by 5" deep in the popular 6/10 & in double the ports 12/20 then 8/10, 8/12, 9/12, 10/12, 10/16, 8/16 etc. I have many rotor designs in the mind to from popular sirens from the past, one of them is the first generation Allertor as it is my favourite siren I like how they sound in all port combos. The other favourite I have is the 500 10/12.

That type 5 in Hillsboro, IL is loud as Snot, and I bet it has the same Rotor style.
@MidwestSirenProductions Жыл бұрын
You’d be correct, as it appears to be an earlier build similar to mine. Later models appeared to simplify the vanes to the more traditional bi-directional straight vane style seen on other Federal’s.

Intersting to hear that the rotors are 10 inch in diameter. My Model 1 has a 9 inch rotor that's roughly 1-1/2 to 2 inches tall. It's directional like the ones on this siren too, albeit the vanes are all short instead of having 8 long vanes or 4 short and 4 long as many other Federal sirens at the time had. These are really odd sirens for sure.
@MidwestSirenProductions Жыл бұрын
Hol up, the Mach. 1 has a 9-inch rotor?! Holy smokes that’s incredible for that size!
@DJ2226 Жыл бұрын
@@MidwestSirenProductions yeah. It's quite a bit bigger than a Model 2, but since they top out at 5000 RPM and don't have an air intake on both sides of the chopper they don't get quite as loud. It's also heavier than a Model 2, like 80 or so pounds. The bigger rotor makes it wind down slower too which makes it sounds a lot larger than it is from afar.
