Up movie commentary
Up is a really sweet movie that, while a little frustrating at times, is mostly very heartwarming. We were looking forward to making this movie commentary for it because of how sweet it is, but we kinda forgot it's actually also a bit darker than you might think.

Everyone talks about how they cry at the intro (and I am one of them for sure) but I almost never see anyone mention the part where Carl sits down and sees all the memories of their life together that Ellie put in her book. And then when it gets to the line "Thanks for the adventure! Now go have a new one!" it's all over for me, I am a crying mess. It's so beautiful and while a little bittersweet its inspiring. Like you guys said, it's not about what you did, it's who you're with.

Oh I always say I cry at 3 separate parts: the beginning, when Carl finds the Adventure Book and sees that Ellie filled it with pictures of their life together, and near the end when we see that the house settled right where Carl was trying to get it to. Makes me bawl every time.

i like the fact that even though carl has spent his whole life idolizing muntz, he was able to pick up very quickly that he wasn't a good guy and tried to protect kevin when russel spilled the beans about her. didn't even like kevin but was instantly like "whelp, this guy's fuckin awful, can't let him near that bird." before he even revealed his serial killer tendencies!

@@tbakhalid4781you'll find that adults often have a difficult, or even very difficult time not judging children by adult standards. even if they are conscious of it not being right, you'll see it still annoys or bothers them that children are.. children. Often this kind of person also has trouble within themselves if something was rocky in their childhood as deep down they still feel a sense of responsibility or fault, even when they were just a kid. It's not always the case but I'm sure you can see why that kind of connection exists. If it does, it can make it harder to break the habit of criticizing children because the feelings, frustration you feel about your own child self are reflected onto them. you want them to be better because you wish you were better, so maybe what you went through wouldn't have been so bad. Even without all that, it's commonplace for adults to not be able to place themselves into the shoes of a child or look from that perspective, or at least not even think to attempt to do so.

I know it seems like it's just a house, but the purpose was that he made Ellie a promise, crossed his heart on it even. He's a man of his word, that's why it all hurt him so much, because he felt like he'd failed her.

I think Carl refusing to leave the house behind even though it slows him down is symbolic. Ellie is gone, and he is holding on to this old idea of what their life together should have been, that he's stuck in place and can't move forward with finding new adventures, as Ellie would want him to do.
@SilverCookie412
@SilverCookie412 Жыл бұрын
There’s a recurring symbolism involving birds and blimps. Throughout the movie, any bird imagery was associated with Ellie, and blimp imagery was associated with Carl. Examples were their zoo jobs, them setting up the baby’s room, and the small bird and blimp figurine facing each other on their mantle. I’d like to believe that Ellie’s spirit went to Kevin and was trying to guide Carl through his next adventure, making sure he moves on, while he clings to his “blimp” (the house).
@alexbebout7791
@alexbebout7791 Жыл бұрын
I think part of Karl’s grief and creature-comfort driven behavior after Ellie’s death, was really behaving and therefore feeling older in body and spirit than he actually was. When he starts interacting with the world and people again, some vitality returns. Like a muscle atrophying from lack of movement. Which I suspect Ellie knew would happen, and why she wanted him to go out and have a new adventure, instead of curling in on himself in grief.

its sad because, especially with the good amount of mobility he has, I can totally understand why he wouldn't want to go to a nursing home. they can be so awful. but also, this movie kinda brings up another problem, which is older people dont give up their houses, and younger people are stuck in apartments or living with their parents. and the ratio of money made vs the cost of buying a house is so vast, especially comparative to back then. there's also much less land available, and the jobs have changed as well.

@salmahernandez3142

I get where you are coming from and just want to ask where would the old go? Some of the elders do sale but must do so high enough to make sure they are able to afford living elsewhere even while downsizing and keeping up with everyday expenses and med bills. Some do reverse mortgage to cover expenses and have where to live at the same time. They hope it is enough to last atleast until they die. Its hash bc unlike the young, the old do not have their bodies able enough to start a new venture - they must rely with what they have accumulated or hoarded. In recent months I've witness the majority of homeless people, 1 in 2, be middle age and above. They have worked hard and just one event or a spiral of small things accumulate and thats it they are reduced to the streets. Its depressing af but nothing is being done. Who is at fault. Lets face it in the US the culture is different and many ppl do not live in multi generational house holds that provide some safety for elders; nor are there social nets for ppl who are no longer high value consumers in profits first economy. But also having children just so they can take care for their aging parents is indeed selfish, but what is the solution? The system is in need of repairs. In Up, the house also is going to be demonized in favor of what seems to be an office building or condos that the average person cannot afford. Apart from this movie being hopefully endearing, it also brings great anxiety terror of being alone or without in old age.
@Emj772
@Emj772 Жыл бұрын
Most people spend 30+ years paying to own a house specifically so they DON'T have to die in a nursing home. It makes sense they wouldn't want to give the house up. I agree it sucks that houses are so expensive, but it's not because old people aren't selling them.
@strawberryfox8819
@strawberryfox8819 Жыл бұрын
But it wouldn't change anything if old people would give up their houses. Companies would up the price anyway or build a brand new house on the spot. If an old person is still capable of taking care of themselves and their house, they have every right to stay there. They earned itm

Okay so the snipe is actually a real bird but the snipe that's being referred to in the movie is something that camps and places that get you Outdoors is something they'll ack new members to look for. These tend to be young really little kids eager and sometimes annoying just to get them out of your hair for a bit. It's just a little prank that older campers(9 to 14) pull on the younger ones(5 to 8) It's pretty funny and kind of cute.

Eddie Asner (voice actor for carl) its such an underrated talent. He's been in a bunch of things and every time I hear his voice it makes me so nostalogic. He died in 21 and as stupid as it sounds it made not want to watch this movie quite yet. This reaction brought a lot of good memories as I saw it as a kid first and over and over as I got older. I feel like every time I watched it more things and questions came up for me. Concerning your discussion on Russell's lack of attention at the dinner table: What I recall from my childhood is that when you're the lone child with two or more adults, you tune the adults out. They don't speak about much that's interesting, partly due to the big words and partly due to concepts or perspectives beyond my knowledge, so you concentrate on other stuff to amuse yourself. The villain voice actor is no stranger to villainous roles: Christopher Plummer. I had the great opportunity to see him play Iago to James Earl Jones's Othello, live; incredible. And even as Herr Von Trapp in "Sound of Music" he starts as a cold, off-putting character.

Oof, this one is a good one and a tough one for me. My grandparents were married over 60 years. They married in their early 20's around 1952 or 1953. It's just my grandma now and I am her caregiver. Seeing Carl alone really hits me hard, but him finding a surrogate son/grandson in Russell reminds me of my grandma and me. She says I have taught her a lot and that she wouldn't still be around if it wasn't for me. Not only all of that, but I truly want a love like Carl and Ellie's. Kids or no kids, I just want someone to do life with no matter what happens. I just want to have the adventure of a lifetime with someone. This movie is so poignant and beautiful. I have an even darker theory - that he kills the female dog once the pups don't need her and keeps the best female from the litter (to birth next gen) tucked away and not part of his main team of male dogs that do his bidding. If Muntz takes out human rivals like their lives don't matter ending dogs for being female is not going to even make him bat an eye...

@@themoviebudz1988 Unless the last female died before Carl and Russell got there. That's the end of the dogs' line right there

when the trailer came out for this one, my sister would be up watching tv in the early morning...and the part where Carl is fussing at Kevin and Kevin fussed back...we were rewinding over and over on the DVR and deliriously laughing (we also were rewinding a scene from Kim Possible where Ron was doing some weird little shoulder dance lol)

Is it just me, or as I get older do I see that part and think to myself “ honestly Carl…same” because now I realize he wasn’t doing it to be a complete jerk but purely off of reflexes ( and that’s how my reflexes would lead me as well) 11:01 - 11:08 Also: i in no way condone violence…I’m just saying, stop touching sht😂

"Up": The first quarter of the movie can reduce viewers to tears. Then the movie soars into the Blue Sky, as Carl and Russell find common ground.;)

That movie is a beautiful movie. I would love your take on the hunchback of Notre Dame because cinema therapy did the villain therapy on judge Claude Frollo and it was really interesting

I know you were joking about death but that is a fairly popular theory, he's dead the kid is an angel and what's his nuts explorer is the devil I'm sure there's something for the good dog and the bird but I don't know what it is.
