I was really young (about 8 years old) when I used to watch this and even at that young age I thought to myself surely this can't be what life is all about. Then a few years later rave and ecstasy culture hit England and I escaped that mundane horrible bullshit that TV shows like this represented. The rave and ecstasy culture saved my generation in the late 80s and early 90s from being like these people in this TV show

I was around the same age and loved this show and Jim! I knew people like this even had family members like this. I was also a part of the XTC and Rave Generation... I feel our country and culture have lost a big piece now that people like this, hard, cheeky, honest(ish) working men, barley exist.

The great vicinage of Britain could do without reminiscing and retreating to the lost years (of which you were, as you stated) finding "innocent" dope and faux-spirit lifting chemicals, computerized cacophonic canned music and difficulties with PC gender titles to satisfy the stupified and staggered. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. This is up there with the office, Faulty Towers and only fools. Jim Davidson is a master of his craft and the writers subtle nuance capturing gritty East end life in a humorous and witty way is a delight to behold. A true classic of the genre.

TheWizard22UK Hi I must agree I wasn’t a fan of the young ones either, I just didn’t find it funny at all. But saying that some of the young ones when they were in other shows/films individually I thought they were quite good. For example Rick Mayall in drop dead Fred was brilliant.

It’s called that because a long time ago a Spanish princess came to London to marry an English king. Her title was “the Infanta of Castile”, and the people in London changed it to The Elephant & Castle”. The area in London where she lived is named after that now

I enjoyed it,... And Davidson's rapid fire acid tongue,...and funny quips and antidotes are both witty and clever.......not a vintage sitcom in the fools & horses or porridge class,....but miles better than the rubbish on the box nowadays

It was a deliberate surname Jim concocted to say to the audience that " I'm a Londoner " Even if you watch his other sitcom about being a chauffer, his surname was London The sitcom was called Home James and he played the role of Jim London a chauffer. Again, it was not the funniest sitcom.

His material can be ‘problematic’ in this day and age and he did have a chequered personal life, but Jim Davidson is talented. I remember a ‘lefty’ comedian and writer being in awe of his comic timing at a recording of Commercial Breakdown nearly twenty years ago. He just didn’t like him as a person and his brand of humour.

He was signed to do a comedy night in a local working men's club years ago and stormed off after doing about 10 minutes of his shitty act because he was being heckled. He pocketed £5k in notes for doing fuck all because he couldn't handle hecklers. So yeah, if you're going to call people snowflakes, Bernard Manning isn't the best choice of comebacks.

A lot of sitcoms were like this back then Liver birds,Citizen smith etc. Comedies like Black Adder and Fawlty Towers were more unique shows that didn't follow this same formulae.

I lived in Torquay back in the eighties, nightclubbing every night in the summer. Anyway, JD would do the summer season every year, and a friend of mine knew him. So I had the 'pleasure' of joining them a couple of times pubbing & clubbing, and I can assure you, JD was an obnoxious, drunk knob-end - totally giving it the big "I am". He was actually an embarrassment to be with, celebrity or no celebrity. Of course, he's an older man now and I'm sure he's a lovely bloke, but back then, he really was a prick - I'm sure if you asked him now, he would agree!!

lots of negative comments, all JD haters from the looks, this was funny in the 80's, maybe not now with all the PC shite, but it was then. comparing this to the young ones doesn't even make sense. the young ones was alternative comedy, which paved the way for todays comedy style, this was old school. and YES i was around in the 80s and used to watch both. not a big JD fan these days though i have to admit.
