Guidance on the path to Realisation is necessary for all. The experience of the Realised is sure to guide the novice, who is walking the path. For the one whose mind is open, the whole world becomes a teacher. We can learn both how to be and how not to be from the world. In the spiritual context a Sadguru is one who instructs us about the Reality and pushes us into the Beyond.
The story of Avadhoota Dattatreya is used to portray the importance of a Guru. Yadu, the son of King Yayati, leaves the royal life and goes to the forest. On the way, he throws away his ornaments, one of which lands near Avadhoota Dattatreya. The realised Avadhoota suggests Yadu throw his ignorance and that throwing ornaments will be of no use. Yadu, intrigued and humbled, wishes to know from Avadhoota Dattatreya how one can give up ignorance. Consequently, Avadhoota explains how an open mind can learn from anything and everything around oneself. He tells what he has learnt from his 24 Gurus, thereby guiding Yadu on his spiritual quest.

Episode 25: Guru Once a man proclaimed that he can teach anything to anyone. Anything means science, music, cooking, languages, driving... anything. And anyone means humans, birds, animals...anyone. Out of curiosity one education committee proposed to him to teach a donkey. He readily agreed. After 6 months of rigorous training a big show named 'The learned donkey' was organised in a huge Stadium. Obviously there was a lot of crowd and media coverage. At the decided time entered the pair of teacher and donkey student amongst loud applause. The Jury eagerly asked, "Mr Donkey, how much is 15 + 35? The donkey wagged it's tail and looked elsewhere. Maths must have been difficult for donkey. Next question, 'Mr donkey, could you perform a couple of dance steps for us?' again the donkey seemed untouched by the question. After a few failures of receiving any answer from the learned donkey, the Jury turned to the teacher in a mood of complaint. Teacher replied calmly, 'I said I can teach but if he didn't learn what can I do?' Once the disciple in me is woken up the whole world is a Guru. Else, none can teach me.
