Upcountry Thailand A Winter Walk to the Village Market

Winters are very cold in Northern Thailand and so it was a struggle getting out of bed this morning. Let’s just hope that we’re not too late for the morning market.

Ta's is English is amazing with her grasps of vocabulary considering that her first language is vastly different & that she didn't learn English from young. She may stutters & fumbles occasionally but her her word expressions are not textbook based. There's marked difference from the earlier uploads till to date & I trust Brad has been helping her a lot : )

I guess you’ve been there a while to get used to the normal temperatures of around 30 degrees, so 12 degrees gets to feel cold now. The dogs can be nasty in rural areas as they see anyone passing by as a threat to their territory. I carry a large cane stick to protect myself when I go for a walk around Klong Koy, Uthai Thani. Good to see you two enjoying life

I'm paranoid. Whenever I see Thai gardens, lots of crawl spaces, semi-jungle, I always thing, "There's definitely venomous snakes in this area"!! They're right in the middle of Udon. I'm convinced the locals keep the dogs and cats around as a snake control measure.

In 20 years of living in the village Ta had never seen a snake. Had seen snakes on the farms of course, but not in the village. When a village is kept free of rubbish, snakes, rats, etc will just stick to their natural food sources and will be less likely to be attracted into the village.

@@OurLifeThai Interesting. A guy I know had a house only 200m or so north of Udon's train station: so right in the city. He had a cobra in the garden and another in the house. There was an overhanging branch from the big irrigation ditch area behind the property. My pal with his big detached modern house right next to Phra Khanong train station in Bangkok had snakes in the garden and common areas. As I say, I think it's the dogs and cats that keep them down. Another pal in Udon - north of Nong Prajak park, but still right in the city - reckons he has a snake in the garden twice a year. He says it's the most nervous, scrawny, frightened dog that'll kill it. They bite and throw it across the garden!

The village of Ban Tam is probably one of the cleanest places that I've ever been to in Thailand, hence the reason there's probably not a lot to attract things like snakes. I'm sure that there's plenty for snakes to eat in the bigger cities. I've seen 1 snake in our village in Samut Prakan. It's certainly not the cleanest area that I've ever lived. There are plenty of snakes that live in the bush around the golf course next to our village also. I see them crossing the road (it's golf course property & cars seldom use this road) when I'm riding my push bike. I know what you're saying about the dogs, I've seen plenty of videos of dogs going after snakes! 👍😁🙏

The baht's quite badly overvalued. My local supermarket in the UK sells me 1.2kg of very lean pork loin cutlets (under 5% fat) for £8 = 320 baht. It's not really any cheaper in Thailand. £1 = 40 baht is silly. 55-60 would be nearer the mark.

The majority of the people that I come in contact with are just living normally, without any fear of the virus. I was on a song tao (mini bus) on the weekend with over 20 people (in the Samut Prakan Province) and no one was wearing a mask. But I don't live anywhere near the tourist areas.
