Cutting off the top and bottom of a tin with a sharp old chef knife is much easier.

Could you rust the metal after you have created the design and then put your finishing on after?

Hello, Thanks for your question. I would not recommend doing this for three reasons the first is that the non-rusted cans are much harder to work with and the second reason is that the rusting technique is a little unpredictable and could get overdone in some spots. The last thing is that the rivets (at least the ones that I used) were aluminum which I believe would break down much faster than the tin cans.

Oh please! I too am a Alice in wonderland nut! How can I get the designs for them?? I can't draw but I can build. I'm thinking that another way to cut the fans could be with my dremal tool. It has a cut off attachment. But I REALLY need a pattern.....help??

Hi Tammy - I searched for Alice in Wonderland silhouettes and then enlarge the art in Adobe Illustrator. I think you might be able to do this with some free software. You can work with the metal before rusting but it is much stiffer and difficult to handle.
