Thank you Jan for all the wonderful easy to follow tutorials that you are so gracious to share. I have made your self binding baby blankets and bibs. I am fairly new to sewing, since I haven't done anything since 8th grade, (many many many moons ago) and was looking for something during the extra hours I had on hand due to the lock down, started sewing again for fun and came across your youtube. I can not thank you enough for all that you have taught me. I plan to go to our local thrift stores in the next few weeks and will look for wool sweaters and some fleece. I'll let you know how they turn out. Thanks again

I have made a few pairs of these great mittens and the only issue I found was that they tend to slip off or slip down my hand when I put on my jacket. So, i tweaked them by cutting them shorter so they end at the wrist joint and using a snug cuff piece that folds over on my wrist, instead of folding over the thick part of the mitten. Hope that makes sense. They seem to stay on better that way.

@JanHowell10 ай бұрын
If you are using a wool cuff, you'll want to have washed it (felted before sewing onto the mitten). That way when you wash it in cold water, it won't shrink anymore.

I love this video. Thank you Jan. I visited my local thrift store today to obtain some wool sweaters and was shocked at how many sweaters these days are made with acrylic, cotton , spandex blend. I also found a lot of sweaters that the tags have been cut off. Any tips on how one might tell if a sweater has wool content?
@JanHowell Жыл бұрын
They really don't have to be wool sweaters, but they are a lot warmer. If you do find a wool sweater, notice how it feels compared to a synthetic one. You can also burn a litte piece once purchase and it will burn clean where a synthetic one will melt.

Hi Jan, I am wondering if you recommend to only use wool sweaters or if this pattern works for other fibers as well such as acrylic, polyester or cotton sweaters? I realize the the natural wool fibres would be cozier but I have other sweaters I thought I might like to use. Are there pros and cons that you could share for each? thank you. I am going to purchase your pattern and give it a try.
@JanHowell11 күн бұрын
You can use fleece and other sweaters made of different fibers. If you line them with fleece, they'll still be cozy. Let me know how it goes.

Hello Jan, I purchased your pattern today and I was wondering if felted fabric can also be used not just felted sweaters to make the mittens or do you need to have a the stretch in the sweater? I don't have many sweaters and they are all similar in color. I do have some felted wool fabric from an old blazer and an old scarf. Could I use them too to add some more color to the mittens? Thanks so much, M.

Wonderful tutorial thank you. I have a couple questions. First, do you need the liner or can you skip it? Second, if you do, does it get sewn to the outer mitten or just float in there? Third, is an old cashmere sweater appropriate or do I need a sturdier wool? I look forward to making these, thank you!
@JanHowell2 жыл бұрын
Hello, You can skip the liner if you want to, but I recommend it. The lining is sewn together with the outer mitten at the cuff. Yes, an old cashmere sweater works excellent for the lining and could be used as the outer. Just depends on how thick you want your mittens. If using the cashmere sweater for the outer, you could skip the lining or just line it with another layer of cashmere. Hope that was helpful.

@JanHowell3 жыл бұрын
Make sure you're not stretching fabric as you sew. When you turn it inside out, does the puckering go away? You could also try easing the presser foot tention, if your machine has that ability.
@netty0623 жыл бұрын
@@JanHowell I'm not stretching it, I'm using my built in walking foot. I think I need to use a straight stitch instead of zigzag. I'm going to seam rip what I've done(1/2 a mitt) and try again. Thank you for your suggestions.
