this is a great up-cycling idea, my wife has at least 3 pairs of old worn out boots she never wears and i want some leather bound books on the shelf

Damn, this is pretty awesome! Never thought about using leather from boots! I should definitely look into this. One more modification I would personally do to complete the stressed out leather journal though is to maybe age the paper a bit with coffee or tea.

Totally Awesome! What a great way to upcycle! Haven't been to a thrift store in quite some time but another place to look for leather is in the skirts and jackets. A mini skirt would be cheaper though, but probably not as interesting! Good job!

Absolutely Brilliant!!! What a Capital idea! I use to do volunteer work in many countries. I came across an old camel hide that I made an art portfolio out of. It was a daunting task but lasted and held up, until my home went up in a blaze from an electrical storm. 😢 Everything happens for a reason. We lived through it!🙏🏼 I am impressed with your work. I will continue to follow. 🌸🙏🏼

Brilliant!!! I've been tempted to get into leather work yet the expense of the tool "kits" have been out of reach. The over all process your tutorial presented takes the intimidation I "previously" had for leather work. So looking forward to my next visit to the 2nd hand store. Totally INSPIRED!! Finding your channel... priceless! thank you for sharing your time and talent. Looking forward to more videos.:-)))

Oh, I've once made a book cover for my LoTR out of my mom's old suede boots, and your Traveller's Journal looks quite similar, exept my cover has a beads mesh on the spine and more variable embrodery. Upcycling is really fun to do!

Great idea for recycling! I think an improvement could be to design it as a cover for regular notebooks, so you can change the book out for a new, when the old book is full. And maybe add a pocket for cut outs, photoes and a pen.

If you have any furniture stores near you that sell leather furniture, you may be able to talk to them about getting some of their scrap either cheap, or free. My dad has to do service repairs on furniture all the time, and an up side to that is I get worn leather that may have a cut in it, or a scratch, but I get it absolutely free. I don't get to be too picky with colors, but I've spent maybe $40 on leather total, but I have a closet with several boxes of leather. Also, it wouldn't be a bad idea to check out a scrap yard, if you could get leather from the seats of a junker car, that could also be a good source, might have to pay a little, but I can't imagine it being too expensive considering it's likely to be extremely used and worn.

Cool idea! I‘m planning to make leather gaiters with material from an second hand jacket come winter. I love A.S.98 boots, but they are sooo expensive. Great little video. I love recycling. I bought a leather coat at a second hand store just for the leather. Used some to wrap around the handle of my carving axe. Some to make sheathes for my chisels and some to make a spoon carver bib. I still have a bag of usable leather from that one $8 purchase. Nothing should go into landfill.

Do you think it'll work if the boots aren't real leather? I've got some boots with worn out soles that aren't real leather, and I'm on a fairly tight budget so I can't go buy secondhand leather boots AND waxed thread
@karmel56036 жыл бұрын
You know I wish I'd thought to keep my worn out boots now :/
@offkilterleather92486 жыл бұрын
As long as the material is fairly flexible and can be pierced for the stitching you should have no problems, and if they're scuffed/beat up, that just adds to the overall look. :)
@trishajackson88206 жыл бұрын
You can use almost any material you can stitch though, vinyl, leather, pleather, denim, ect =D All depends on how much effort you want to put into it
@geministargazer98306 жыл бұрын
Hot tip on the waxed thread: just use dental floss, it’s cheaper
@offkilterleather92486 жыл бұрын
When you get down to it, dental floss is simply waxed polyester thread; the only downside is the very limited range of colors :(

I've made something like that from my old boots too! Do you know about Midori traveler's notebook? They have elastics threaded in the spine so there is no need to sew the paper right into the cover because the notebooks are held by those elastics. With this concept, you could switch the notebooks inside the leather cover indefinite number of times.
