Watching you handle that sewing machine brought me back to watching my Mom who passed away 1yr ago. She was a BOSS designer and seamstress, An FIT graduate. She sewed without any patterns. She'd buy the shoes then find the exact color fabric to match, then design her outfit! You did that with such ease like she did. Beautiful!
@AloneInTheGarden4 жыл бұрын
Professional seamstress here. 🙋🏻♀️ This is a such cute idea, but there’s definitely a few things to note before the novice sewist attempts this. You should always use a stretch stitch on clothing like this if you’re using a home sewing machine. A stretch stitch is going to be your zigzag or lightning bolt. If you don’t use one of these, you risk your seams popping when putting on/taking off the shorts. Another thing to note is she used leggings as her template. Leggings by nature have at least 5% Lycra in them, and are able to stretch by 50% to be able to fit like a second skin. Sweatshirt fleece (what the shirt is made from) will not have that same amount of stretch, so you need to account for that or there’s a big chance your shorts aren’t going to fit over your booty lol. Especially if you’ve got some sexy curves. She also cut all pieces the same size for the shorts, but the booty is naturally curvier than your front side, and traditionally when making shorts/pants, the back panel pieces should be slightly larger. If you’ve got a cute and tiny heiny, this may not be an issue for you. I would highly recommend anyone wanting to try this to download a free shorts/pants pdf pattern and use that, along with measuring yourself before making the shorts just to be on the safe side. You don’t want to waste a good shirt! 😉 You go girl!

Thank you so much!! ❤️❤️ I’ve only been sewing for 2 years so I’m still learning from the mistakes I make every single day. But I will be using this information!

Also the type of material hafto use a surger to keep material from fraying when stretched or washed!
@AloneInTheGarden4 жыл бұрын
Patti Hainline A serger is great and one of my favorite tools, but it is not necessary if using a zig zag or lightning bolt stitch. It will act similarly and allow the seam to stretch. Knit materials don’t fray. :)

If this is your first project get a couple of sweaters. Start with the one you are least excited for so you can learn the sewing machine, and it will make it so you wouldn't feel bad making a couple mistakes. Good luck! You are going to do great 👍

That's a good way to upcycle perfectly good clothes! Men have better quality clothing anyway, it's more durable. That's what's wrong with folks falling for fast fashion because items "go out of style " I have a sewing book from the 1970s and it showed basic styles of shirts, skirts, and pants. Nothing has changed much except for width and lengths of collars, ties, skirt and pant hems and of course, color and pattern! The same A line skirt will look different over the years of fashion only because of color and pattern. That's all the designers are selling us

How much bigger should the sweatshirt be from the size that you wear? I typically wear a large, so I am guessing I might need something like a 2 or 3x for enough fabric for the shorts.

I have a serious question that maybe somebody can answer for me. It seemed to me that the shorts fit a lot longer that what it looked like they would when sewing. Is that a trick of the eyes or was a different set made than what was modeled? I would just like to know how to expect what the length would actually look like when prepping.
