Update #12 - Bird damage | How to protect grapes from birds

In a recent video, I went through one our greenhouses thinning the grapes - a bit of a miserable job. Shortly after, disaster struck as blackbirds started stripping the bunches so we have tried to protect them by covering with organza bags. Hopefully this will keep them safe while they ripen :)

They are widely available online - ebay, amazon, etc. I think I got these from amazon.

Last year I got my first grapes (only 5 nice sized bunches) and one morning they were all stripped!! I only got a taste of one or two sour grapes. So this year I am ahead of the game. This year I have tons of bunches and I am not sharing them with the already well fed birds! I bought these organza bags which Im told work very well. Good luck with your grapes! Morning Jonny I hope it helps I know Mark in Australia uses bags like those to protect his fruit trees from the cockatoo birds in Australia. Can you not put a full mesh screen door on the greenhouse? Thank you for sharing 👍🇨🇦🐝 safe

That's good to know 👍😊 I can easily cover the door, but I have watched the birds go through the roof vents - there are 8 of them and they would not be so easy to cover.

Perhaps the birds are looking for water? Years ago I remember a gardening friend putting out bowls of water in the garden in the summer, 'its so the birds don't try to pick the fruit' - his 'theory' was that birds need to find food with a high enough water content and at certain times (hot dry weather) they are left with little choice but to raid fruit, ripe or not. I look forward to seeing the result!

That’s an interesting thought! Perhaps that is a factor, although we are more or less surrounded by lakes here so I have a better suggestion for where they should go for a drink 😆

If there is no way for birds to get in that would be great. I can’t easily do that here - I could cover the door area but the automatic roof vents are more difficult.
