The big lie of the right wing has always been that they were about freedom and democracy. They've always been about slavery and autocracy. They even once tried to overthrow America trying to cling to slavery, and now they bow to dictators from Saud to Rus to China. Trump's 10% tariff on China is just for show. His tariffs *on our allies* are more than double that. Everyone thought Trump worked for Russia but the truth is that he and Putin are just co-workers. Neither is subordinate to the other. They both answer to Xi.

I am an American, and I don’t agree that we should require Ukraine to have elections. The U.S. doesn’t own Ukraine , and it’s up to Ukraine to make that determination. Plus, how can Ukraine have fair elections when it’s in a war without determined borders? And furthermore, many millions of Ukrainians have left the country. It wouldn’t be an accurate count without having all the people included. Unless I am mistaken, a democratic vote is not required in the Ukrainian Constitution when the country is at war.
@Comm.DavidPorter5 сағат бұрын
You are not mistaken. Elections are barred under the Constitution when the nation is under martial law. The US was never placed under martial law during WWI or WW II, so we have no ground for comparison.
@EvaKrywecka5 сағат бұрын
Wrong. Ukraine became a puppet of the US after the 2014 coup. Victoria Nuland bragged about spending $5 Billion to topple the pro-Moscow government in Kiev that was democratically elected. The US has owned Ukraine ever since 2014.

Churchill wasn´t even elected, he came to power since his own party members regarded his predecessor Chamberlain as "too week" against the enemy. The fact that Churchill was the head of state during almost the whole war was, in other words, never confirmed by the public in a general election. Here in Sweden very few stands with Russia, with the exception for a small marxist-leninist party with perhaps 500 members. In the beginning, in 2022, there were many articles about the war, and all of them took side with Russia. Nowadays they are silent about the Ukraine war like mices when the cat is around, but a year ago they still sometimes wrote about it, and they almost shocked me when they openly admitted in an article that the election in Crimea after the russian annexation "of course is not legitime". I mean, when even old marxist-leninists can admit this fact, how come there are americans, MAGA-bums and others, who support Russia all the way? I can´t understand it.

And in 1944 there was the full slate of presidential + all other elections. It is just that Franklin Delano Roosevelt won reelection in 1944, so there was no leadership change. That’s a nice thought, but realistically I don’t see Russia giving back land to Ukraine after it’s cost Russia so much to take it. The only way that will happen is if Russia collapses, and I don’t see Trump willing to wait and see how long that will take. Ukraine can elect to disregard any peace deal that Trump negotiates, but it will most likely lose US support if that happens, and Ukraine will lose even more territory.

As for no election in the u.s. during wwii. FDR beat Dewey on the 7 Nov 1944 election with 53.4% of the popular vote. This was his 4th term and he died a few months later in April 45. After that the u.s. limited the president to 2 terms. There have been many elections during wars big and small.

If a Crimean wanted to be part of Russia, then they should have moved to Krasnodar or Rostov-on-Don. You do not transfer an oblast to Russia from Ukraine due to a majority vote after an invasion. If Russia wanted access to their navel base, they should have remained friendly with UA and rented the base for a long term. This is foolishness. Oh and I am in the US and do not know anyone who wants elections in Ukraine, not until the end of this war.

As of 1992 through 2010, ruzzia DID 'remain friendly with Ukraine and rented the base" for a 20 year terms starting in 1997 under the "Partition Treaty on the Status and Conditions of the Black Sea Fleet." Payment of rent took the form of cancellation of Ukraine's energy debt to ruzzia. Putler saw a chance, with the weakness of the Obama Presidency, to violate ruzzia's duties under that Treaty and secure the use of Sevastopol for free instead of paying rent. Obama told Medvedev, "Tell Vlad that I can give him more flexibility after the [2012 US Presidential] election," giving Putler a green light so long as he didn't embarrass Putler. (This being the Barack Obama who, in the 2012 Presidential debates, ridiculed Mitt Romney for asserting that ruzzia was America's major geopolitical rival.) Sure enough, Putler waited a decent interval, and then moved on the Crimean Duma, forcing its members to sign at gunpoint for "annexation" by ruzzia. Obama responded by applying "a dime's worth of sanctions' against ruzzia, but refusing to give Ukraine so much as a single bullet.
@markevans22945 сағат бұрын
Krasnodar and Rostov-on-Don, like Crimea, were briefly independent following the collapse of the Russian Empire then subsequently annexed by the Russian SFSR. Russia no longer needs Sevastopol as a naval base due to Ukraine sinking most of their ships. A tactic Ukraine possibly should have used around 1920.

Hi Denys, I love your work and fully support your position. However, it is incorrect to say that the US did not hold elections during WW2. In fact the presidential election took place on November 7, 1944, while the war was still ongoing. Incumbent President Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected for an unprecedented fourth term, defeating Republican challenger Thomas E. Dewey by a significant margin. The U.S. Constitution mandates regular elections, and there are no provisions to suspend them during wartime. This principle was established early in American history and has been maintained even during significant conflicts, including the Civil War and WW2. That said, I support suspension of elections in Ukraine at the moment and even in the aftermath of a ceasefire because a) millions of citizens have fled the country and b) 20% of the country is still under occupation.
