@@testtesting2868 Sorry but your are very wrong as the Honda factory in North Carolina is not closing and no one is loosing their job. Part of the reason for Honda getting out of the lawnmower business is the big box stores are demanding electric mowers and Honda has no interest in electric lawnmowers. The factory has switched over to building Honda ATV's and several other products. Hi, I've had the issue with my HRX537 (same as a HRX217 53cm=21inches) with a GCV200 engine here in Belgium. Bought the mower in january 2023, started mowing end of march I think. First time went okay. Second time, it wouldn't start and it yanked the cord from my fingers. Luckily I didn't get injured. Brought it back to the dealer. They contacted Honda and they received a complete new engine to replace the broken one. No problems since then, mowing twice a week for about 30 minutes. Few weeks after the replacement I received a letter from Honda saying the warranty was extended from 2 to 5 years.
@StuartNC Жыл бұрын
My friend and I each bought one a few weeks ago. One at HD and one at Lowes. We both returned them even though we used them a couple times without issue. The local dealer suggested we get rid of them asap. Also the GCV200 camshaft repair is a huge job requiring total disassembly unlike the older models and I don’t want that kind of repair on a brand new mower. Ironically we both sold our old HRX mowers to get fresh ones before production stops. Mine was 18 years old and I sold it on Craigslist still working and starting on one pull. I want it back!
@averagejoevideo9556 Жыл бұрын
That’s crazy! I am sure you want your old one back. I would as well. I was told the GCV200 camshaft repair is a 2.5 hour job unless the technician has done lots of them. It’s my understanding that Honda only reimburses dealers 1.5 hours labor for the repair. I am surprised you were able to return the one you bought at Lowe’s. I know it’s too late, but, buy mowers from dealerships and not Home Depot or Lowes. I love my John Deere but the ones from HD or Lowes are shit. I like my Bad Boy too and yet the models at Tractor Supply are much lower quality. Usually these manufacturers either make the cheapest possible thing for sale at big box stores or they don’t even bother and instead, sell the rights to put their brand name on some junk. I don’t know for sure if Honda did that here but the rule of thumb still applies.

I waited quite a while for my mower to be repaired. The difference is that I had less than 2 hours on it. I am sure the wait times are going to be long at this point. My guess is that parts availability will not be the issue as much as waiting in line at the repair shop.

This issue started in fall 2022. My new (6hr) 217HZA would not pull through or turn on the electric starter. Initially the dealer found the Key in the flywheel was partially cut but then after replacing that they found the Cam Was faulty. I was told I was number 158 in line for a new camshaft. I finally after two months called Honda Customer service , explained the problem and delay and they got with my dealer and moved me up to number 38. Even with the new cam the mower was not running correctly and when I went back to service they found another part on the engine had been installed incorrectly at the factory and could not be repaired. My dealer and Honda agreed that they should take back my old mower and give me a brand new mower. The new mower went in for the break-in service at 5.3 hours because I had some other concerns with the mower and they found it also had a bad camshaft and decompressor which this time was fixed in about ten days. Needless to say I have almost no confidence that this mower will continue to give me service with any degree of reliability and am waiting for Honda to make some type of permanent fix.

Being a retired vehicle maintenance manager for heavy road vehicles, I've seen this OEM type issue many times. Typically, the OEM hides the issue and will either use the same defective part as an expedient repair measure, or upgrade the defective part once without proper testing, only to come out with a proper third part rendition after testing that actually fixes the issue. You will see this when the same part comes out with upgraded part numbers like a suffix or prefix with A,B,C, or superseding dates. I'm sure Honda is scrambling, but I'm betting the first fix, will probably not be the last and also, Honda is probably giving up on the lawn biz due to industry conversion to electric which is another can of worms!

I have experienced two hard pull starts with one hard kickback. My dealer informed me of the no sale order and really didn’t have any information on resolution as Honda hasn’t provided any such details. My dealer doesn’t want me to use the mower because it could cause injury. I’m really not sure what I’m going to do but will likely pay for lawn service for the near term. The hard pull compression issue is intermittent and can probably be worked around. However, the kickback is no doubt dangerous and I can see how it could easily injure someone. Honda needs to step it up and take care of its customers! It sounds like there is already a basis for a class action suit. Let’s just hope Honda works diligently to provide a quick and lasting solution. They were clearly more interested in sweeping the issue under the rug as much as possible rather than customer satisfaction. For what it's worth, I bought one of the HRX217K6HYAA mowers in April. It has received a fair amount of use during the time I have owned it. (1.5 acres of grass. Mowed 1-2 times per week) I haven't had the problem...yet. 🤞But I NEVER shut my mower off when I mow the yard. (On my model, the mower can continue to run while the blades are stationary.) When I shut my mower off, it doesn't get restarted until at least 4 days later. Maybe that is a way to prevent this issue from occurring until Honda hopefully issues a recall on these mowers. Of course, having said this my mower with probably crap out the next time I use it! 😩

Ok I have an older K5 from 2018 , and I start and stop a lot on my hill of death, but the hydrostatic transmission pulls me up the hills .... I still need breaks... On a hot restart sometimes it just seems like I need a little extra effort on the pull, but there has never been a strong snapback . I've got a little single stage Toro snowblower that does that, and if you're not ready you could get hurt .... So I understand the danger. Until the fix , or it blows up, what if you pull it to start and quickly let go....??? Dont guide it back down .....??? Another guy who said he starts his with the blade engaged .....??? Could it be that the extra drag weight would create enough change in the faulty cam to get the thing started without snapping back ....???? It might be experiment time, but I know when I get the recoil snap back on the snowblower, I just let the damn thing go anymore ....Lol.... ! 😳 One more thing .... ( ray of hope ) ....From my understanding, Honda doesn't make these engines .... theyre manufactured in China, im not sure Taiwan or mainland. Now I might be wrong on this, But I have a Chinese, Honda Clone engine on that Toro snowblower I spoke of earlier ..... These engine , mostly the 160 & 190cc , should still be available since other manufacturers use them. Is this problem showing up in those engines as well ....??? My reasoning is, if Honda can get the cam corrected at the assembly level, where ever it is, it would be a lot quicker and easier to slap another engine on it than to repair the internal cam.... ??? Thoughts ....???
@averagejoevideo9556 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, this issue is with the new GCV170 and GCV200 engines. It is not with the older GCV160 and GCV190 engines. The parts for these newer engines are much more pricey. For example, a recoil for an older GCV is about $10 while a recoil for a new GCV is $30. I see what you saying about swapping engines rather than sourcing parts, causing repair delays, and ultimately paying dealers for the repair. And, with your idea, the assembly line would correct the issue quickly. In theory, this would be more efficient, but I don’t know about the cost. I am sure Honda is building engines much cheaper than we realize. Thank you for your insight and for watching. Please like and subscribe for updates!

Bought a HRN216 with the GCV170 from Home Depot last year. From the very first pull of the recoil starter rope, with the very first addition of oil, with its very first tankful of clean ethanol free gas, the mowers idlecwaa crap. So bad, I called Honda and reported the issue. The runaround was incredible until I informed them I was a small engine mechanic of 20+ years and have owned several models of Honda mowers. They instructed me to take ittocthe local certified Honda repair shop. I was shocked to hear that I would have to pay a significant amount to have them look at the machine. I asked about the warranty. They stated if I didn't buy it from them they would not honor the warranty and I would have to seek reimbursement from Honda. This year, I bought a Craftsman M320 from Lowes. Best damn mower I've operated in years. The Honda was a waste of $700+ dollars. You think Honda cares? Think again. You think the Home Depot cares? Think again. They all care about one thing, profits, profits, and more profits. Don't rvrr fool yourself into believing they care. They don't give a shit about you or I. $700+ dollars is what they make in a millisecond. End of rant. Be wise, not fooled. Good day.

That mower was $829 the day before our Lowe's pulled them (I was thinking about purchasing it). I used to work at a different Lowe's and know that their return policy was changed due to so many people abusing the liberal policy that they had at the time. Some people would purchase a nice Riding Mower, self propelled mower, in one instance, a Troy-Bilt Horse tiller, or whatever, in the spring, then return it in late summer or fall with all sorts of made-up complaints, then do it again the following year. Another frequent scam that realtors were guilty of, they would purchase one because they were preparing a house for sale, then return it once they had the lawn and landscaping finished. Those are the type of folks that you can thank for not being able to return your mower. It Sux but they had to do something. I hope you get your mower repaired soon!.

This is what happens when a business goes from quality and workers first to profit first . This reminds me of the Honka log house company in Finland . the business was started by one or two men that wanted to build laminated log houses at a reasonable price . their business model was quality and staff first and then hopefully some profit . The company excelled in its early years until one day the old guys wanted to retire , so they hired some young guys with MBAs to take over the business . within a short period of time the company was in trouble because of law suits based on poor quality and non existent service . The creators of the company were so distraught at what was happening , that they bought the company back and restored its good reputation . Honda like most companies eventually become seduced by profit over quality and ethics ,resulting in the issues outlined in this video .

I've got a 2020 HRX217 which thankfully does not have this issue but my old Honda GCV190 mower did. I ran it without a blade (never do this) which partially sheared the crankshaft keyway on the flywheel side. The kickback was brutal which caused me to develop a habit of pulling the starter rope with only two fingers instead of pulling it with a closed fist so if it does ever kickback, it'll rip the rope out of my hands instead of ripping off my fingers.

I will tell a few things being a long time Honda dealer. One is Honda is the worst about admitting warranty flaws it takes them forever . The powet equipment plant that is closing does not make engines the parts are generally made in Thailand ,Brazil or Japan. Reason that Lowes quit taking equipment back after it has fuel? Well people would literally buy a mower go mow a field then return it . Same with generators buy one for a storm and take it back when it's over. So the entitlement culture some have ruined it for everyone. Oh and you can start a mower with a bad decompression valve by simply slowly pulling the engine to top dead center then give it a quick pop of the rope instead off just yanking on it. Last thing Honda mowers haven't really been that good since HR215 aluminum series went away . Go get a nice Toro not from a box store .
@WisconsinEric Жыл бұрын
The aluminum deck HR 215 of the 1990's you mentioned would likely cost $1,500+ if brought to market today. Hondas and Toros of the 80's and 90's were likely the best consumer mowers ever built. I have a 1991 Toro Recycler powered by a Suzuki 2-cycle and it mulches better than my Honda HRX 217, and the finished cut looks far better than my HRX. I am keeping my eyes open for a aluminum deck Honda HR 215 on the cheap. I see HR 214's often, but not many 215's. Been looking for 3yrs now.
