Hey, i have an idea.....🤔 lets build a dam out of dirt and then just let it sit there forever while we build towns down stream......🤔?

Can you call it a 500 year flood when it was man made disaster?

Robert Scrimger Exactly! This is 99% stored water. Rain may have got the ball rolling but didn’t cause the massive flooding.

My feed back is that both Whitmer and Nessel knew the dams were unsafe but did nothing. The Winona lake property owners didn’t want the water level lowered and Nessel said the freshwater clams would suffer. So the water level stayed high for them. “ The plot thickens of Wixom Lake, the EGLE and the MDNR, Boyce agreed to raise the water to its normal summer level.In September 2019, Boyce applied for a permit from the EGLE to reduce the water level of the Wixom Impoundment, again, due to concern for the safety of its operators and the downstream community. On November 12, 2019, not having received a permit but believing its safety concerns were paramount, Boyse began to reduce the water level of the Wixom impoundment. Although the EGLE’s Water Resources Divisionand Michigan Department of Natural Resources ultimately denied Boyce’s permit on November 25, 2019, Boycecontinued with the drawdown while it appealed that denial. That appeal is still pending.In April 2020, again under pressure from the shoreline residents of Wixom Lake, the EGLE and the MDNR, Boycebegan to raise the level of the Wixom impoundment and normal pond level was reached during the first week of May. Before Boyce did so, the EGLE issued it a permit to raise the impoundment, despite the fact that the EGLEDam Safety division was well aware of the Edenville Dam’s inability to meet even 50% of the PMF standard.Boyce’s actions to lower the Wixom impoundment to preserve the integrity of the Edenville dam and protect itspersonnel and downstream residents and property were done under threat of a lawsuit by the MichiganAttorney General’s Office for millions of dollars in damages for allegedly killing freshwater mussels as a result ofthe two winter drawdowns.“The State agencies clearly care more about mussels living in the impoundment than they do about the peopleliving downstream of the dams,” said Lee Mueller, Co-Member Manager of Boyce Hydro, LLC.On April 29, 2020, Boyce filed suit against the EGLE, the MDNR and certain high-level officials in those agenciesin the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan for multiple violations arising out of theirregulation and oversight of the Edenville Dam. Two days later, on May 1, 2020, the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, the EGLE and the MDNR responded by filing suit against Boyce in the Circuit Court of Ingham County,seeking damages as a result of freshwater mussel deaths allegedly caused by the two winter drawdowns Mussel protection from Ag of Mi Nessel?Whitmer knew of this.”

This is horrible. 20 years of dodging federal regulations, finally the license to operate the dam revoked, but to late and transfer of ownership hasn't even taken place yet. I see many blaming the current government of Michigan, look to corporate abuse of the legal system to defer costs of operating safely and look to the past 50 years of leadership on both sides of the political spectrum, if you want to actually find cause and resolve the issue so this crap doesn't happen again.

Best wishes to the flood victims! But I have a question about this 500 year flood. Did Christopher Columbus document the last one? America hadn't been settled yet! Any current soil data would be washed away, so where do they come up with this timeframe?

That's not what a 500 year flood means. A 500 year flood simply means that a flood of that size has a 0.2% chance of occurring in a given year, or a 1 in 500 chance.
@mikefreeman3772
@mikefreeman3772 4 жыл бұрын
@@andychen7390 How can anyone quantify such an exacting estimate of 0.2% of 500 years when they have no idea what happened at any location over 300 years ago? And yes, I took several university water quality/hydro./limnology classes (MU, Columbia, B.S. Wildlife Bio. 1994). Cindy Bonem is correct. This mess is 100% at the hands of a select few humans failing to do their jobs. Regardless, I am so sad that so many people are suffering from criminal actions.
@andychen7390
@andychen7390 4 жыл бұрын
@@mikefreeman3772 The 0.2% statistic comes from a series of functions and equations and it doesn't actually require records of some said amount of years eg. 300 or 500 years. Of course, the more data that's available, the better the predictions are. It's a little hard to explain but the math is sound and relatively reliable. But, and I should've explained this earlier, the label 500 year flood really just indicates the size of a flood. A 50 year flood is smaller, a 1000 year flood is bigger, etc. Of course, none of this is to say this flood was natural in anyway or that the people who were supposed to manage the dam weren't at fault. There is definitely a problem of mismanagement that's at play here. However, again that's not what the 500 year label is implying. It is merely an indication of size. What geological experts are saying is that the failure of the dam caused a 500 year flood, or in other words, the failure of the dam caused a big flood.

As bad as this is, it was worse in the '86 flood. All you could see of the Tridge is the top 3 feet of the arches for about 2 months. Then you were just able to see the walk way when driving over M20 bridge. This is bad as far as devistation from the raging waters. Though in 86, it was a slow rise so only the water raising was the issue, but it was 3 times as high in 86 than it is now.

@cindybonem494
@cindybonem494 4 жыл бұрын
Darlene Douglas the brown water is not from Dow, this water is up stream from Dow and is quite clean, it’s from minerals and decaying trees and leaves it looks like dark amber and is quite clear when your next to it, people canoe and swim in it, the light water has a lot of clay stirred up in it from the rushing water.

It also has dirt mixed it as well and just has settled due to the current moving things still likely as well. As I know that's how the river gets just north of our family farm.

So why is the water at 7:06 and further, on the left side looking black and on the right looking muddy and why are they not mixing? Is this Dow Chemicals?? I thought for sure someone asked this already.

@cindybonem494

Pam Romney the water that looks black is actually Amber in color and is upstream from Dow, it’s quit clean and people canoe and swim in it the color is from minerals, rotting leaves and trees, when you’re closer it looks a lot better, the river also has a sand bottom which makes it fun to tip out of the canoe.

Hi the turquoise circle in the beginning is the farmers market awning, it’s about 8’ tall, the strange bridge is called a tridge, a three bridges coming together and two rivers, to the right of the turquoise circle is highway m20 to the left down the river is Dow, the city is up on a ridge about 20’ high then tapers down to the “flats” then to the river that floods every year, but not this bad. As the camera pans to the left there are baseball fields that are underwater, and the paved rd is Posieville Rd.

Edenville Dam Following the federal government's 2018 license revocation, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) took oversight of the dam. EGLE determined that the dam was structurally sound.

B WanE yep in 2018 the feds revoked license of dam owner. Michigan was then placed in charged of inspection and oversight. They gave the dam a satisfactory rating. Then Dana Nessel sued Lee Mueller the dam owner to keep levels at max over wildlife concerns. See what you can learn from reading.

I find it rather disturbing that the Smallwood dam, the first to fail on the 19th and upstream from the other two, is STILL not being shown or mentioned as having failed. There is footage out there of water spilling over it and chunks of earth being torn away below it. Just because the building may still be standing doesn't mean that it didn't fail (and allow more water to flow downstream leading to Edenville going out, and later Sanford as well) 3 dams failed, not 2

The 1 in 500 year storm is an ever changing event as climate change impacts our weather patterns, and human activity upstream of the dam concretes areas over leading to faster runoff; lines river banks so there are no areas for floodwater retention; and clears trees and vegetation that could slow stream discharges.
