While our literature says the bolt is Grade 8, the bolt and nut are actually made metric grade 12.9 (exceeds grade 8). And it's 7/8" thread instead of 3/4" like OTC - coarse threads hold up better to impacting than fine. So whatever was done to it would have certainly nuked a fine thread 3/4" - it's just math at that point. We can send you an impact rated thrust bearing that may help keep the force where you want it though.

Astro, thank you for responding. I just received the 78830 tool, and I noticed the forcing screw major diameter threads measures 0.830", which to me is significantly undersized for a 7/8" course thread. (I also ordered the 78825, same 7/8" thread measures 0.865") I called customer service asked for tech support, was not able to get through, only to customer service, who was not able to assist with providing a spec. Can someone from tech support contact me? Perhaps this is what's wrong with Flat rate masters tool. I was having a good run with Astro tools...but this hickup, and the hickup with customer service has made me loose confidence in both the product and the support.

Hi - OTC uses a ¾” fine-thread jack screw with a proprietary thread coating that’s been shown to reduce wear and increase screw life up to 10 times that of competitors, with or without a thrust bearing.

I have the same kit, been using it maybe 12 months, zero issues, as with any press screw you need to keep it lubricated. I also added a needle bearing between the washers too... It is a course thread as compared to others but it's treated me well. Thanks for the update!

I have the Astro kit and it's served me well. Granted, I've only used it a few times on only 2 cars, but it did exactly what it was supposed to do without any issues, and of course I made sure to lube the threads first. Used an impact on it even though officially you're not supposed to. And I got a proper SAE impact socket for it, at least for the nut. The bolt I used an almost identically-sized 32mm socket. A hydraulic press would have been nicer, but I can't justify and don't have the room for even a small one. It was a bit pricey for my budget at around $80, but it paid for itself compared to what local shops would have charged after just 2 bearing replacements. I've since used some of the adapters to press in races and seals and other odd tasks--carefully as they're not specifically designed for that. So, for a high volume shop that does a lot of press-in bearings it might not be heavy duty enough, but for DIYers it's way more than adequate in my experience, and does light double duty on other tasks.

And one factor you conveniently leave out is that you can buy three more kits for the price of the OTC.
