I'm not sure that they'd still backup the boot image when patching because the update via OTA feature in Magisk (for Pixels at least) have been removed.

No joy on 3a. Followed all steps, Manager still doesn't see the new restore file. Navigated back to \data\ and the stock_boot_0 is gone. Reboot, try again, same result. Either this is no longer valid (191205.011), or something was omitted from the explanation.
@MaowDroid4 жыл бұрын
You may have to restore your Magisk Manager to it's original package name for it to work, can you try that? I was reading that there was another way as this was a temporary workaround until Magisk Manager can support this directly.

Why i don't have inactive slot option? I'm using pixel 4 xl
@MaowDroid4 жыл бұрын
On the latest versions of Magisk Manager the option to install to inactive slot (used for OTA updating) has been removed temporarily due to bootloop issues from how Google has changed how OTAs are handled. So updating via the factory images & patching the stock boot.img is the way to go for now.

Hi Joseph! I'm sorry for the hugely late reply. For the OTA installation, does it prompt you to reboot to finish installation? That's the point where you can install Magisk to the inactive slot.

How do I stop my phone from automatically rebooting after an OTA?
@MaowDroid4 жыл бұрын
Like after you tap on reboot to install, or it reboots as soon as it is ready to install? If it's the former, then you can't really stop it, unless you hold Power + Volume Down so it boots into the bootloader first, and from there you can shutdown.

Thanks for your excellent video, MaowDroid! Pixel 3, currently on December update which I had to factory reset my phone after an issue caused (I think) by not disabling some Magisk Modules. I've been through your excellent tutorial several times, everything checks out but still getting the message "Stock backup does not exist!" when i click on the Restore Images tab in Uninstall Magisk . I'm on Magisk 20.2, MM 7.5.0. I put the "stock_boot_0.img.gz" in system/data but while I was in that folder I see a "magisk_backup_0" folder with a "boot.img.gz" file. Is this normal or what should I look into next. Edit: I found my error and everything is working now. I see you're in OZ, MaowDroid, sure hope you're not in the fire zone(s). I spent a lot of time along the entire east coast (from Tasmania to Darwin) years ago, still have a lot of friends there. Sure wish you and the country well!

Hi there, thanks for the vid! I'm wondering if this would work when updating to a new beta of Android, for instance Android R Beta 1 via OTA, without the official Magisk support.
@MaowDroid5 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, if Magisk is incompatible with Android R Beta 1 (for example), you would either end up updated and unrooted, or in a bootloop. You can choose to restore images and then take the OTA but not install Magisk before rebooting to Android R. I would always recommend waiting for the canary builds of Magisk that will support Android R when the time comes.

Ok I need help Pixel 3XL Feb security patch Rooted with latest magisk canary.. Unlocked bootloader. USB not recognized in pc, tried different usb/PC, still same---I guess it's hardware issue So I wanted to update using this method to Android 11 beta.. Do you think it's safe, considering I had no access to adb?! Does resetting to factory through system recovery would also tamper magisk patched boot.img? And boot unrooted normal, incase bootloop. Thank you!
@MaowDroid4 жыл бұрын
Have you got different cables to try too? Does your device appear in Device Manager at all? As long as your phone can be detected by your PC in the bootloader you'll have a good chance of saving it! Although, I think if you manage to install the OTA, your phone should be updated and keep root with no issues. But make sure Magisk Canary is being installed as stable and beta Magisk is NOT compatible with Android 11. You can download the canary build of Magisk Manager and it should change the update channel to Canary or Canary Debug. github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk Resetting through recovery doesn't touch the boot partition (at least it'll still be the magisk_patched image). So you'll need to flash the stock boot image from the factory image and then you should be able to boot up.
@Whykon15 жыл бұрын
It just says installation problem and that magisk needs to be updated.
