Sanford lake is located in Mid Michigan. This footage was filmed on May 26 2020. This was after the collapse of the Edenville Dam on May 19 2020. Wixom Lake was rapidly rising due to heavy rainfall and the dam could not hold back the water. The side of the dam failed sending water rushing towards Sanford Village. The aftermath and damage left behind is devastating. Make sure you subscribe to catch the follow up videos I will be filming.
Here is the first video if you did not catch it:

@@JordanMowbray It's all over the national news, Jordan. If you live there, perhaps they aren't showing it there but I'm on the West Coast and the scene in your video here is all over the national news and even nighttime news magazines. @@Mercmad It's COVID 19 that eclipses this. Sorry, one is significantly more dangerous and means DEATH. Flooding in Michigan or death of 100k ++++ Americans. You decide. The music, editing, filming and I love how you insert yourself walking and telling us what we are looking at. Facts of the city and places helps to put it in perspective. Your documentary is professionally done! You must have a background/training.....to make this. Thank you for sharing. I had no idea Saginaw Road was wiped out! And US 10 damage. We went for a drive this weekend to check it out ourselves. The lake beds look awful and surreal. I enjoyed seeing the river flow peacefully through. Native grasses and perennials would look beautiful next year, all through the former banks of the lake. Don’t rush to the next topic, it’s hard to take in what you’re describing....not boring! Also, more wide views of the whole lake from above and river. Please post another with updates, and news about the dam situation. 10 stars!

I grew up in Midland but bought my first home in Sanford in 1963 where I lived until about 1972. The house was behind the Department of Natural Resources office on the corner of Saginaw Rd. and Lynn Street. (My house was on Lynn St.) I'd like to see some of the residential areas so I can pick out the homes of friends and family. You are doing a great service. I now live in Florida. After the flood, a friend who had also lived in Midland came over and we watched your videos together. It's so sad.

Jordan, another excellent and unbiased presentation of the reality these people are living. I would like to see an update once a week of how the community is doing. The media says no more donations but if there is a general help fund, I would like to know it. I shared this video on Twitter. Your new friend from Lake Orion. God bless you. Sad thing about the Fiero Museum is the guy was two weeks or so away from selling the collection and retiring. Always passed by wondering what that building was all about. Hard to see a place you know in this condition. Flood insurance was crazy expensive along both lakes. Felt the same way when Houston was underwater. Born and raised there. Great video Jordan. Thanks for the info. I live beneath the dam at Whaley Bridge in the UK and we very closely missed a major disaster last year when the concrete broke up, holding back a massive amount of water. It was very touch and go for several days and several villages and nearby towns were evacuated. The Prime Minister and the Army flew in and made emergency repairs to the old concrete. We dodged a huge disaster and thankfully no loss of life. It could have been me making a video like this if things had been a whisker different.

They MUST replace the dams, otherwise the property tax values of TWO counties will be destroyed. People will have to walk away from their homes, because they can't pay the high property taxes. Michigan can foreclose and take your property away from you, by you just not paying the taxes a single time.

I live pretty much on one of the dams that failed, there is a lot of rumor on blame right now ,but theres a little more to the equation there are 6 dams in the mix hear, first chapple dam dumps in to secord dam then that runs to smallwood dam that dumps in wixom witch has 2 dams about a mile apart from each outher pretty much on the same Levie ,all dump in to sandford but there is still one more dam, it's the beaverton dam that dumps in to wixom also that ant owned by the outher dams ,I know one of the dam workers personally, there is 6 workers that work all the dams lifting gates ,expect beaverton they run there own ,all where being over run with water with all the gates open ,and all end up in sandford ,its relly just physics ,all them dams winding up in one lake with only one dam that's why sandford failed .
@amydunn3510
@amydunn3510 4 жыл бұрын
There are 6 dams in the mix, but that is not how they connect. Chapel Dam does not dump into Secord. Chapel Dam holds Wiggins Lake which flows into the Cedar River through Gladwin to Ross Lake in Beaverton. The Beaverton Dam then releases water into the Tobacco River which leads to the Edenville Dam. Secord flows to Smallwood which flows into Wixom Lake and was held by the Edenville Dam spillway. After that it all flows down the Tittabawassee River to Sanford.

you can see how much water there was before the dam collapsed in his before pics. The amount of flooding basically overwhelmed all the dams and once a dam is overtopped, its only a matter of time before they fail (especially an embankment dam). Of course there were some issues regarding whether a dam was properly maintained which seems to be a contributory factor.

The earth berm looked way too narrow on one of the dams I saw. I’m a civil engineer, so I look at these things. I recommend pulling the stamped drawings for these dams and taking them to a forensic engineer with civil background for their review. These dams were definitely being mismanaged, but the embankment walls look too thin. The towns should be doing this digging into the designs too

Outstanding video Jordan. My background is in emergency watershed protection at USDA. We've fixed many of these projects. I've never seen better documentation. In terms of cost, it will take years to fix these dams. Michigan simply cannot afford it. A better use would to return them to natural conditions. This is the trend nationwide.

Really nice work. I wish more people would do this in other locations when an event like this happens. The drone really helps.

If the leading business in the village area was tourist-related, i.e., fishing, camping, boating, etc., you might never see a rebuilding of this area. This was the first video from the dam break that I have watched. We are so sorry for all your loss and the devastation of your village, homes, and businesses. We were glad to hear that you didn't have any deaths. However, this could be the death of your community without the working dams.

Nice drone film footage. Great job. Love the before and after. I had never heard of this happening. I suspected it was in Michigan bcz of hearing the name Saginaw Road. I did look in the description box to confirm that it happened in Michigan, plus, of course, the Pontiac cars, being known to be connected to Pontiac, Michigan. Keep up the good work! And, what a thing to go through during the pandemic. Sorry!

Was wondering about the wildlife there in Sanford. I'm sure there were lots of loss of deer and anything else that couldn't climb a tree or out run the rushing water. Did all pets get out also? Did the Post Office and the Hometown Pizza get demolished along with the restaurant down the road from them? I'm a midlanders who lives 5 miles from Sanford and I frequented these places. I'm shock at the devastation! Thank you for this update on what's been going on to help get the word out about our area.

Thank you! Great job. The size of those tree stumps in the lake bed is amazing and scary for a recreational lake. Did lake levels drop in summer?

Great job on your video. I'm interested in how the people are doing with the clean-up and plans for the town. Many of the old dams were created to help prevent or control flooding. If the dam is not rebuilt, will flooding be a continuing issue?
