UPDATE: Some Gold is Harder to Sell

If you have an emergency need, the last thing you want to find out is that it's hard to sell your gold. Normally, this isn't an issue, but if you have "weird" choices, you limit your options for selling. Either that or you lose the profit you were hoping to make.

Like you, I have bought and sold 100s of ounces of gold. I attribute my losses as the tuition for the education on what to buy, and what to avoid. I owned a 2017 Dutch Mint Lion Dollar (coin of the year) and the 2018 Dutch Mint Lion Dollar. I paid about $3,500 over spot for each coin. I quickly learned that it was impossible to sell these coins. It took almost 3 years. I found buyers when the USA government gave every poor citizen a $1500 stimulus check in 2020. (I did not qualify for stimulus, I earn too much). The buyers told me that they wanted to buy something “real” with the stimulus. I lost about $500 per coin after shipping, insurance, and eBay fees. Never again will I buy something that expensive. Another painful loss was buying gold coins that were minted from the Scottsdale mint. The dealers refuse to buy them, and the on-line guys will only buy them at melt. Now, I only buy buffaloes, Brittanias, and Maples. I only buy 24 caret coins. It is all about liquidity. Gold is money, it is not a play-thing.

You're making a point that I really believe in. Everything I've purchased has been main stream stuff. For gold, that AGE's, Buffalos, or Maples (usually Maples for the lower premiums). Anything else was a sovereign minted coin that I picked up next to melt. For silver, it's name brand 5oz bars, minted coins, or basic rounds. I buy no "collectables" or items with numismatic value. (Well, in fairness, I did buy one 5oz round because it was just so cool and I wanted to use it a coaster in my man cave - in a capsule of course.) I always plan to sell at local LCS's or dealers at coin shows and I never plan on getting more than spot for my metals - anything extra is gravy. Steven Covey said to "begin with the end in mind" and for this PM enthusiast, it means "buy with the sell in mind" on every purchase. I also do not buy online; leaves too many footprints in the sand.

This further reassures me that I'm doing the right thing sticking to recognizable Gold coins like Maples, Phillies, Britts, Buffalos and of course Eagles and staying away from Semi's. Thanks for sharing!👍

I've been a fan of keeping things as simple and reliable as possible and this is a theme that runs through my life. The more complex something gets, the less reliable it tends to be and usually at a time when life provides plenty of unwanted complexity all on its own. So, in terms of gold stacking, I only stack AGEs, Maples, and some Britannias. I like the Britannias a lot so will be adding more as I close in on my gold stacking goal. Hopefully, that will occur sometime in early to mid-2024 but it's one of those wait-and-see types of things. Because of this, I don't have any exotic / fun / weird gold in my stack and have no plans to add any. I might add some pre-'33 gold at some point but am not in any hurry to do so at the moment.

The only gold coin I would consider selling at this point is a 1910 $20 St Gaudin's. It's in excellent condition except it's mounted in an 18K necklace coin holder. Belonged to my mother and I love the coin except it is held in place by 4 tiny tabs than likely damaged, to some extent, the reverse rim. It should be sold as jewelry and remain in the setting. I would likely replace it with a mint state coin.

The problem is the bullion dealers. Those same people who sold you the coin for well over spot because it is a special coin, will not recognise it as such when it comes to buying one, but then instantly mark it up with high premiums when selling it on again because it is a special coin. The dealers are ripping us off. In the UK, we have Back Yard Buillion, who is acting as in intermediary selling his subscribers gold and silver for a small fee. The seller gets a better deal than if he or she went to a dealer and the buyer gets lower prices too. This is truly needed in the UK, where dealers will offer hundreds below spot for your oz of gold. Though it isn't easy to buy because he sells out so fast! UK customers only. Maybe the US needs a BYB?

Anyone who knows anything about gold will not care what mint it comes from. .9999 gold is gold. You may not get your premium back when times are hard everywhere, but it is still gold. I bought a few pretty gold rounds, not worried about the premium. I preach purity and weight in both gold and silver. Sovereigns or generic rounds, when push comes to shove weight and purity will rule. I buy pre-33' gold and they have the best chance of recouping premiums, even though I am NOT planning on getting my premium back. They are collectible and they are gold.
@tonybonesLD
@tonybonesLD 11 ай бұрын
You can always get your worth in weight of gold, or close to it. Depends on what you’re stacking it for. Things change over the years. We never know what 20 years from now will be like. Easiest to sell are AGE & Buffalos, then Canadian maples in the US. If you’re stacking long term, don’t worry about selling now. We might not even be able to but this stuff anymore once a digital dollar is the new control tool:

The ensuing mind numbing pain as the body sends profound distress signals to the brain that wash over us like a warm summer breeze reminds us not to be intrigued by either as they're simply just another hole. Pre 1933 - Ebay is the best platform if you are not in a hurry. If you list at 10 day auction, your turn around liquidity is about 30 days. Unfortunately you will take a 20% haircut with fees.

I see coin collecting/numismatics/exonumia as an endurance run. I enjoy seeing numismatic coins I got in high grade time to time but also understand playing around with them too much accelerates their aging. The one area of weird gold/silver/copper that seems to do better than most is the Dan Carr issues over at Moonlight Mint. Dan comes up with some artistic and novel work. Maybe not as intricate as some of the larger mints but still aesthetically pleasing and interesting.

I have the Myths and Legends series, they're my "never sell" coins. A guy on facebook offered me spot + 40% for the 2018 Dragon/phoenix. I said no 😁. That beings said, semi collectable stuff is easier to sell on the secondary market than standard bullion in my experience. Everyone is always on the lookout for the Myths and Legends while no-one wants a Kangaroo or Britannia.

I looked up the word weird the other day. It didn't mean what I thought it did. I've been using it wrong for decades. It's a word for witches and/ or supernatural or unearthly. I will not call another thing weird ever again in a joking way. Or a person. I used to jokingly call people weirdos. I didn't realize I was calling them a witch. I got the definition from my 1984 Websters dictionary. It has the word history with the definition also. I'm not judging your title. I'm saying, I am embarrassed by my own ignorance. Another example of a word or name I didn't understand is the band Incubus. It used to be my favorite band until I looked up the meaning of the name. It's a male sex demon. Opposite of the succubus, the female sex demon. Guard your hearts. This world is not our home. 👍💪🙏

i used to collect coins in a series. If you miss one, it sucks. especially if its a homerun coin. so for me coin series are a "all or none" venture. kinda sounds like that is where you're at. you can always sell and load up on something better or more comfortable. btw I used to sell on ebay a lot before the 600.00 tax bs kicked in. Ebay was always around 13%. so i'd mark things accordingly so I could make something, but I would only break even at time.
