There are a few different reasons I can see to have elevation as an option. The main one would be cooking. If you ever look at your box of macaroni and cheese, it tells you to change your cooking time due to elevation. And with all the recipes that come through the Google Assistant and smart cooking, it will change your cooking times.

Correct on both counts. this is great info. Worked when I installed everything, but now that I had to reboot my laptop, HA isn't coming up anymore. I get the error msg: Site can't be reached. (IP Address took too long to respond.) When I went in to start the VB manager, I get this message: Failed to open image 'C:\Program Files\Home Assistant\haos_ova-12.1.vdi' for writing due to wrong permissions (VERR_VD_IMAGE_READ_ONLY). How do I fix this?
@fasthowto8 ай бұрын
That sounds like a file permission issue. Check to make sure that the "read only" checkbox isn't checked on the .vdi file, and check to make sure that you are running Virtualbox as administrator. Also, in the future, make sure the VM is cleanly shut down, and Virtualbox is shut down, prior to rebooting. Issues like these are the reason I only use Virtualbox for test/dev/tinkering, and not as my primary Home Assistant server. Windows Updates and unexpected reboots they cause can really give you headaches. Hope you were able to get it fixed, and thanks for watching!

Sweet! I'm glad you found it helpful, and I'm super glad to hear you found the channel. I'm actually JUST now finishing up how to install Home Assistant on the NUC from that video, so if you have an old PC laying around that you wanted to install onto bare-metal, that video should be done in a few hours. Running as a VM on Windows is obviously possible, but it's not the preferred method for a production Home Assistant server. Windows might reboot on you because of updates, then the VM needs to be restarted, all sorts of stuff. I use it as a test/dev environment to play around in and explore and test stuff out before making the changes on my production Home Assistant server. In any event, thanks for watching, much appreciated! :)
@duheaumep Жыл бұрын
@@fasthowto would you recommend not installing in a VM but going bare metal for the reasons above?
@fasthowto Жыл бұрын
@@duheaumep It's not that I wouldn't recommend installing it as a VM - it just depends where that hypervisor is running, and what the purpose of that particular HA server is. I, myself, do run an HA server in Virtualbox on Windows. Now, this is NOT my production HA instance. I use it has a test/dev/lab machine where I can test stuff out before making a big mess of my "real" Home Assistant server. This helps keep the WAF high. Now, if you had a dedicated system running Proxmox or VMware or something similar - by all means, run it as a VM. Hope this helps!

My guess was always that it was for people who lived in a city in a high rise? Like, if your apartment was on the 20th floor it would be able to use the elevation to know that when you were at ground level, it would know you still weren't home? But as I said in the video, I really have no idea. Everything has worked fine for me leaving it at 0, but I think I'm actually at like 1200' ASL or something like that. Thanks for watching!
