Great test! Just had my new BZ4X FWD for a week. My previous car was a RAV4 prime from 2021. Think a lot of BZ4X users will be previous RAV4 users so here’s some comments. My initial experience is that the driving experience is more planted, heavier and nicer steering and overall nicer to drive. The drive train is very smooth and the seats are more comfortable. I’m not missing the extra horsepowers in the RAV4. The matrix lights with adaptive full beam is a lot better than on the RAV4. The small front screen is great, love it. Rear seats have more legroom but the seat is too low. I miss the rear wind screen wiper but it works ok as the wind slowly blows off the water, but not sure how this will work in snow. The boot is slightly smaller. The overall early experience of changing car is very positive. My concern is of course my first long road trip, but let’s see…

Great review! I love my '24 XLE FWD bZ4X. I have done a few videos on fast charging, and I maxed out at 135kW once. I plan to do some cold weather testing soon. It does have a battery heater, but I do wish I could precondition the battery. I get 250 miles of range, no problem. Plus the lease deal is a steal!

All in (gap and taxes, fees) $300 a month. I put $1000 down but really didn’t need to. I haven’t bought gas in 9 months and have charged mostly for free with the included EVGO charging.

The 2024 now has the same claimed max charge rate on the AWD and FWD. Also the per-day charging (full cycle 0-100) is 3.8 now, not 3, or possibly unlimited (unconfirmed)

Great video Ryan. My parents only drive Toyota and they really want to switch to an EV, and they don't understand why I say it may not be the best option for road tripping. Hopefully this video will help explain it to them.

Given the focus on road tripping and people who only want to make short stops, I wonder how valid a 50% Challenge might be. If I'm in the mode of making frequent, short stops, I'm almost never going to wait for the battery to get down to 10%. The other day, even with 70+ mph driving into rain/snow with a several thousand foot net elevation increase, I had been on the road for nearly 3 hours before I made my first stop, and I was still at 16% battery.
@gelu88
@gelu88 Ай бұрын
That happens often after you leave home at 100%, but if you arrived at 16% a later stop after you DC charged, you technically charged more than you needed. Nothing wrong with a buffer, but most cars slow down substantially 20 to 80 vs 10 to 70, so the goal is to get the best out of every car.

@@gelu88 To me, it seems more that it's a test that favors a specific design philosophy (i.e., Tesla's). To your point, I agree that the 10% Challenge is worth keeping specifically because it favors that design philosophy, but I think it detracts too much from the other design philosophies (flat charging profiles) to be the sole focus. I suppose, if we wanted to focus on the 80% cutoff as well, it could even be a 10% and 45% Challenges because that would be splitting the "meat" of the charging profile. Ideally, you'd want an EV that does well on both Challenges. Yes, the 10% would most often be slightly faster, but not always. The delta is one of the things you'd be testing for, and some cars would do exceptionally well. The original Audi e-Tron, E-GMP, LFP batteries, Porsche Taycan, etc. People forget (probably because they were so range limited) that the original batch of non-Tesla EVs mostly charged from 10% to 80% in 20 to 30 minutes with very little difference in charging speeds from bottom to top. It's a different battery design philosophy, but it's one that many consumers prefer.

I mean. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but I don't get it. If you're using 50-100% regularly.. Why not just use 0-50% instead? That would not just be more efficient, but also better for battery health. I'm not saying that we shouldn't care about the charge curve high in the pack, but that's covered by other tests already

@jaz4280
@jaz4280 15 күн бұрын
Not sure of the reason why this channel is so negative about this car? You continue to test the 4 wheel drive and you conclude it is not efficient. Smallish battery and 4 wheel drive is never going to be efficient. You wasted so much time and energy with the same project. People buy this car because they trust it and it serve their need. People are not stupid! So try to elevate your narrative a bit.

Where I am in the UK there are loads of BZ4X’s and some Solterra’s on the roads. They are very popular and maybe it’s for 2 reasons - lease pricing and the fact that many people here home charge and maybe do a road trip once a year, twice maximum. A friend of mine has the FWD version and has had lots of problems with mystery ding dongs and false error messages that the dealer is struggling to fix, they also aren’t very keen on the driver info screen / integration into the dash design. One thing they love is the auto parking system though, miles better than the facelift TM3 that they also own.

First, I second what @AffableAlpaca said about your delivery, Ryan. Nicely done. I spent quite a few years in radio and I know it's not as easy as it looks. But here's my question/request. Are you guys ever going to do a 10% test with the Ioniq 5 RWD. I'd love to see how my car compares to the EV6 Wind. Maybe I'll do my own when we get home from our 2-week road trip coming up soon. 😉

I wonder how this would compare to the OG Tesla model S
@jnrivers
@jnrivers Ай бұрын
I traded a 2013 S with the 85/Kwh battery for a 2024 Solterra. They are pretty hard to compare actually, much different vehicles. The Tesla drivetrain is such a pleasure, and the power delivery was just perfect. On the flip side, while the Subaru isn't the rocket even an older Model S is, it's ironically much more comfortable, and surefooted. It's not a quick EV by any measure, but for just regular car standards it's plenty capable. That's another area that makes them difficult to compare, the Tesla is obviously a pure EV with little to apologize for, while the Subaru seems like a Forester or RAV4 that secretly has an electric drivetrain. As far as efficiency and charging? Solterra around town with a small amount of highway driving is dramatically more efficient. On a pure hwy trip. I think it's more of a wash, but I give the edge to the OG Tesla as it just seemed to shed less energy at speed and on mountain passes. The biggest improvement from a usability viewpoint is the phantom drain. I don't have access to home charging, and the Tesla would lose between 2 and 5 percent a night parked, it adds up during a work week. The Subaru loses nothing, even after a few days. I've read the Korean cars are the same way, no phantom drain. Charging the Solterra is faster, which doesn't say much as the old 85Kwh Tesla packs are really nerf'd after software updates. Higher peak speed on the Tesla, but the Subaru's curve is better. It's a lot easier to live with the Solterra than the OG Model S, but I do miss that car. It was something special.

Why did you yo-yo it, would it be realistic behavior by an owner. Seems you should try not to influance the car's charging Looking forward to many more tests. Kona, Niro would be nice.

The strategy isn't "confusing" at all. The reason this car charge a little bit slower is the 10 year / 1.000.000 km warranty on the battery. I find it hard to understand how you could have missed that info. Here's a great charging test vs Tesla model Y: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWrJh3Wag654qbc
