When my daughter was 13years old her father passed away due to a motorcycle accident. Since that day she has said that she wants his signature tattooed on her shoulder because he always rested his hand there when they had heart-to-heart talks. So I scheduled the appointment on her 18th birthday. I told her we were going for a drive, we stopped for coffee and doughnuts then we pulled up to the shop. She went through every emotion from surprise to tears in about 5 seconds. The artist was so awesome, he made sure she was happy with every step of the process and told her that she could pick out any shirt in the shop as a birthday present and refused the tip. Update! My daughter and I got matching firefly tattoos before she moved across the country.

My first tattoo was small. The artist put the stencil on it & made 3 lines. I passed out. When I got myself together, the artist said “so you’re just going to go through life with 3 marks, knowing they mean you couldn’t hack it” He finished it with those words of wisdom. Now I have half a dozen tattoos. EVERYBODY got their first tattoo from this guy. He would close down the shop & work on some select clients under 18. This was the late 80s. So cool to meet other people 30 years later with a similar story.

I don’t currently have any tattoos, but I have 4 planned. A memorial piece for my grandmother and great grandmother that says “your wings were ready but my heart was not”. The second is a piece for my daughter. It’s going to be her full name and birthdate in a heart over my heart. The third is going on the inside of my wrist and says “perfectly imperfect” and it’s for my past with bullying. I was bullied from kindergarten to grade 12, and going to be my way to remind myself that I may not be perfect, but I’m still awesome. And the 4th, is going to be a piece with my best friend. I’ve known and been friends with her since we were young children. We’ve been friends for 20 years now. We haven’t fully ironed out the design yet for it though.

While I didn't freak out or anything, getting my first tat might be a funny enough story. The artist had me sitting kinda funny so he could do my ankle tat w/o laying me down on the bench. Halfway through I suddenly tell him he has to stop. He laughs and is all like "oh, does it hurt too much?" And I reply "no, I have a thigh cramp!" Both him and the other artist there die laughing while I walk the cramp out. He let me lay on the bench for the rest of the tat

For anyone who is watching this before their first tattoo, I have a half sleeve, 2 knee pieces, a thigh piece, ankle pieces, a hip piece, and a chest/rib peice, and I still get anxious before hand. Knowing your artist, and having a fun arist/client relationship really helps. Talk to them beforehand and get a feel for one another/checking out their art, find a mutual interest. Maybe keep an earbud in and listen to music. It's not bad at all, just weird lol I think of it as a bunch of little ant bites.

Tattoo virgin: I was the tattoo virgin a few months ago I have been wanting a tattoo since I was very young and I finally decided just before summer started that I wanted to get matching mother daughter tattoos with my mom who already has tattoos. I don’t do well pain so everyone who knew thought I would tap out and take multiple sessions. The day comes and the whole time I’m having an internal conversation with my self where part of me was so excited and another part was crying in fear whining how it was going to hurt we get there and have decided that since it’s one of my birthday presents I would go first the artist was so sweet and calming with me before it started explaining how the tattoo bordered some spicy parts and since it’s my first tattoo we could take however many breaks I wanted and he put a bottle of water next to me for during breaks if I feel dizzy or faint. He starts the outline and I actually relax it hurt but not that much and I actually enjoyed it the only break I took was when he switched from the outline needle to the shading needle and drank a little water. Shading comes and while it’s worse then the outline I still keep still and a bit later pretty much when I could no longer handle it and was going to ask for a break he said I was done and everyone in the shop (including a big tough hella tatted dude) telling me that I was pretty much the best first timer ever everyone saying I did better then they did for their first tattoo. So instead of being a bad tattoo virgin I was a pretty good one I’m going back soon for a touch up and to plan my next tattoo

Nearly as my expirence😉 I also wanted to be tattooed since I was a small child.Got my first at the age of 26. Friend, who was tattooed before me (a few months earlier) told me, it would hurt enormously and he nearly passed out.I should eat and drink properly before going to be tattooed (good advice). So...I was a bit in fear, and did not look onto my arm when the artist began. After a while, I thought, that the pain was ok and not that bad...took a look and saw, that the outlines had be done over 3/4 and was pretty astounded, how quick it was and how less painfull. Had later another tattoo done (lower abdomen) and the artist asked : Girl, are you not in pain ? Uhm...no🤷🏻♀️ 3rd tattoo was at the inside of the upper left arm and this pain was one of the worst, I've ever experienced...but it's so nice, it was worth the pain

lmao, first tattoos were matching stylized tribal ravens on either upper arms, just high enough i can easily cover them with a shirt(you know, for jobs). they start on the left arm, i don't react, and so they're like "you don't feel that?".. grinning widely, i point to the triple rebuild scar down the front of my shoulder... "yeah, no feeling on that side!"... works on the right arm, "oh yeah, i CAN feel that!". cracked them up. next tat was a celtic raven, placed at the base of my neck between my shoulder blades(about 5-6" all around), the spine didn't bother me so much... back of the left shoulder... had me gritting my teeth, because of the damage of the shoulder. last one was a caduceus in the inner forearm, closer to the elbow had me almost twitching. inner elbows can be really sensitive... waiting for them to take customers again. funny thing is, my mother freaked when she first saw the original 3, then my tattoo artist brother talked her into one... she has more than me now.

Piercer here : I work at my Dads tattoo shop and I remember one day this girl comes in to get a piercing. she's with her mum. It was a simple belly button piercing. By then I had been piercing for about 3 years and had never had an issue with someone who got a belly button piercing. She was doing fine after getting the piercing done and was chatting and laughing with her Mom, telling her that she was a bit thirsty. I turn around for one second to throw away the needle in the bio-hazard bin and this girl face plants into the ground; mind you she was sitting in the chair. I reach out to try catch her and so did the mum, but we were both too late. And let me tell you, that was a helluva faceplant yo, like the hard thudding kind. Anyways, we pick her up and she stares at me like -Ya that didnt happened.- i wonder if she'll return someday for the industrial piercing that she also wanted to get that same day.

So far in my first year, the worst clients at my shop were mostly people without a single drop of ink on them 🤭 They wanted to call *us* sketchy and unreasonable for having rules about sending them a design before the appointment. My personal favorite was the kid who incessantly nit-picked the hell out of one of our most skilled artists and kept getting up for breaks; after having changed what he wanted to get the morning of.

I get why some people don't want to or don't believe in or whatever getting a significant other's name tattooed on their body. However, that does not always mean that it is a curse or that it's not going to work out or whatever. I got my husband's name tattooed on my arm as my second tattoo after we had been married for roughly 4 or 5 years. Everybody said the same thing that doing that was a curse and we wasn't going to last and all the typical cliche things you hear. This coming August 5th will be 22 years that we have been married. And even if for whatever reason we was not to work out, I would never regret getting his name tattooed on me and I would never get it covered up, even if I got with somebody else. The fact that he is my husband, we have been together so far our entire adult lives and still counting, and he is the father of my children, and I will never regret our relationship, or the tattoo. So regardless of what happened in the future, the tattoo will stay and will never be a disappointment or a regret

I don’t think the cutie mark one is that bad nor are any other fandom tattoos. As someone who’s doing an entire fandom leg sleeve. I think it’s pretty cool that the man was brave enough to get his favorite fandom tattooed on him A couple of tips for tattoo virgins: 1: eat before you go! Make sure it’s an hour or two before hand, or you will pass or at least almost pass out. 2: generally try not to get any tattoos over your joints or over bones, ex: ribcage, knee, elbow, hip, butt cheek, neck. As those are quite painful areas, along with your spine. 3: bring a large water bottle to sip throughout if it’s a longer tattoo, if it’s under two hours, then you don’t have to but, eh. 4: this is just a personal thing, but out of what eveyrone tells you the worst part of the tattoo is. It’s the artist wiping over the course of the last hour because your skin is irritated and Andre wound and you’re wiping a rough paper towel over it. So yeah, fair warning, the wipe isn’t soothing it’s the exact opposite and it’s torture. Do not be fooled don’t think “the wipe is gonna be relieving and soothing-“ no! However I would 1000% go through the pain and discomfort caused by my tattoos all over again if it meant getting the same banger tattoos.

i agree. cringe culture is dead, if it makes him happy, so be it. i'm planning on ~5 fandom-related tattoos because they do hold meaning to me, and i don't care if people think it's weird. on a side note, i'm writing all those tips down. i have enough pain tolerance that 2's not relevant, but i wouldn't have thought about snacks or water, so thanks!

My tattoo artist tried to convince me to move my first tattoo, because the placement I wanted was over my spine. I sat through it and would have fallen asleep but I was sitting backwards on a folding chair and that was the most uncomfortable part about it. XD I've got three more from the same artist and he's commented that I always sit for them well compared to some people he deals with... I think the only problem is that I talk too much and won't shut up the whole time. (He doesn't say anything, but I'm self-aware when not in the moment)

17 years into my marriage my husband was "unreachable" in Afghanistan and no one could tell me anything. To get my mind off of it I went and got his name tattooed on the back of my neck (I was thinking I could wear my hair down and no one would see it if this was ever necessary). He came home safe, and we have now been married 28 years. We did get our wedding rings tattooed when we moved to Hawaii because we were afraid of losing our rings while diving, but he never did get MY name tattooed on his body. He said, " if you are ever "unreachable" it'll be the first thing I do." If I am ever *unreachable", buddy, you'll be too busy being suspect number one, 🤣. (We use the word unreachable because it's disrespectful to people who were labeled missing in enemy territory or prisoners.... his group was just out of communication with higher-ups but not in present danger thank God.)

That was the only tattoo I got where I actually took breaks while getting. I want a tat but no one wants to do it for in there eyes it's a bf gf tat. It's RIP (ex fiance name twin 1 and twin 2) for they died and it's to honor them. The twins don't have a name for they weren't born and don't know there gender

I had been hanging out with a chick for like two weeks, nothing serious just some flirting. Well we went out for pizza and drinks with a few other people and she disappeared for like two hours. She comes back, sits down at the table in the chair next to me and shows off her brand new tattoo. It's my name down the side of her leg, in large helvetica letters. I had no idea what to do with that.

The story for my first tattoo is kinda a fun one and if I knew my fuck up I would have done it anyways... So ive had the idea for like 5 years, I was gonna get a tattoo for my grandpa since he passed on my 13th birthday. Its a pair of angel wings with the words gaurdian angel beneath them. So on my 18th I went and got the tattoo. It was only after I got the tattoo did I realise the spelling was messed up. I didn't notice, my artist didn't notice....parents didn't notice. The person who noticed was my brother in law... So I had to wait for it to heal (for context I got the tattoo on my right shoulder blade) and while I waited I had to figure out how to fix my fuck up. I settled on a devils tail which I could work through the font easily since it was done in cursive. So now guardian angel is spelt properly and ive incorporated a personal joke with the lovely lady who gave me inspiration for the tattoo. I was also able to add a little color to it. There's sparkles that go around the wings so we could balance the red in the devil's tail. The moral of this story is always spell check. But my artist is a really cool dude and in the end it was fixed and I love it so much more. I would mess it up again lol. Zero regerts

I got an 8 hour session on my right pectoral done at once. My jaw went numb after like 5-6 hours and I needed to walk around and get some sugar in me lol.

These people who screech about their tattoos remind me of guys bragging about how easy the drop towers at amusement parks are. But then when they get down they are crying and calling mommy.

Funny thing is, according to a lot of tattoo artists I've spoken to - barter/trade systems are kind of a thing in the industry. Pay and tip your tattoo artist though folks. Also... they appreciate you bringing extra snacks for them when you can. 👀
