He is spot on when he talks about rain and snow! We had a blizzard on Valentines day 1990. The only time I had to stop that day was to get fuel! That truck ran for 36 hours straight between two drivers. We couldnt keep up with the calls coming in. On top of the 4 trucks we had we started calling friends body shops and asking for their trucks to help.

Another great interview. That’s the kind of basic, recession proof business people are looking for. When I was first getting started I worked at a gas station back when someone pumped your gas. The owner had a hook style tow truck. He would send me out to get broken down or wrecked cars. It was a good job for a young guy still in high school.

I been on a tow truck for over a year I taught myself how to do everything but I drive a 2006 international 4300 which can’t run in Cali where I am so I only move junk cars for myself and cars for friends and family here and there. I consider myself to be more into the junk car business than a tow truck driver but scrap price has went down and car values have shot up. So I am currently being co-pilot in a semi truck and about to get my cdl but I do see myself starting a legal tow truck company in the future but I am only 18 I need to get my money up to get a decent truck

I operate a 2018 V100 3 winch unit and our company has 4 heavy wreckers and 8-10 light duty. We run a lot on NTTS for our heavy duty side and run a lot of agreo for light duty. The biggest thing that makes us successful is we pick up the phone day and night. I work night shift it’s hard to have only day shift and use them on call at night. Find a night guy and pay him a little better. The IAA and COPART will lowball and beat trucks to death but if you can negotiate good rates IAA and copart also transit-pro are great to keep for training new drivers so they ain’t working on the side of the highway.

You mentioned that one thing that nobody seems to, though I'm not far into the video or comments. My fiance owns his own tow truck. His insurance is almost as much as our fuel bills. We pay average $1200 a month. We purchased the tow truck a year ago and he has been in the towing industry for 12 years. He has one minor accident on record 5 years ago. For reference, he pays $30 on his personal car insurance. If you are going to tow make sure you have contracts. Our business costs for one truck is probably 50 grand or more. All drivers I know work at least 12 hours a day, at least the ones who have continually stayed in the industry. There are people who lie about insurance but that could screw you over in the long run.

If you want to be a one man band, or a loyal family company: Cool. But the number one issue with this biz, aside from high insurance and fuel costs is Scalability: challenges with driver retention. There are many jobs where CDL A driver's can do far less work and get paid more. Now to present the other challenge of mechanical issues: how many of these are being fixed by the owner v.s. the employee, v.s. the employer hiring it out to a Skilled diesel mechanic? Or, even better, is there a mechanic (or a few) working exclusively for the company in that single role? When you ask a driver to take as much ownership or pride as the owner, and the employee is just an employee (e.g.- no worthwhile incentive-based performance program in place, other than the ability to keep your job or be told "good job"), the driver is going to ask for more money to perform as a mechanic, but not only this, the driver must work harder feeling as if they should be compensated for said duties. The number one issue with this business is getting drivers, then drivers worth a damn; for me, that's folks showing up to work everyday, not doing dipshit stuff that ruins trucks due to lack of training from trucking schools which, after a month, only teach surface-level information... whereas, a lot of us learnt Even More, A LOT MORE on the road making mistakes that a simple 5 to 6000 dollar program didn't even cover. My driving job is also physical as well (oil truck straight truck, tankers and semis), and for me it's a great balance of driving/relaxation at a more heightened level of awareness with some good music, as well as a break from it, which is the physical work side to wake back up again before driving another 30 minutes or few hours to the next work site. HOWEVER, things get a little crazy for me when/if my employer starts asking me to do something like rewire an electrical system, or take an engine apart to replace a part. My job is already difficult enough. Now, in a crunch, as an owner: I WOULD, NO DOUBT, because the amount of loss you can take is EXPONENTIAL by having someone who gets paid a few hundred dollars per hour do it instead. But as an employee in a trade that already requires a huge commitment in terms of work life balance that's already more geared towards working a whole lot more than spending time with one's family? Trucking companies can ask for TOO MUCH, already, from you, As It Is. The second they start asking you to learn to pretend to be a diesel mechanic with YEARS OF SCHOOL and REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE on MULTIPLE RIGS... it speaks to the desperation they face to keep their fleet ruining, which is understandable, but it also speaks to (at times), an inability for company owners to put that money back into the companies, or responsibly set aside a realistic budget for keeping trucks legal so they can stay on the road. The second an employer ticks me off about pretending to be a diesel mechanic, after the 100th time it happens, I start thinking "that guy who just gave me that 6000 dollar sign on bonus down the street who showed me how much easier his job was, and how much more it paid is looking real appealing right now, and I must be an idiot to stay in this predicament". Realistic Expectations come into play for the owners of these companies, as well as the employees of them, and the market is always right: the true indicator, whether we like it or not. It's a real challenge to remain an employee in this industry, let alone a company owner; so hats off to folks like Ken who are doing it.

im looking at driving a wrecker. but not here! my area requires a CDL for all commercial use, even person mowing yards with an S10 hauling lawnmower. plus require a tow truck license, total B.S. so ill do business next state over where my Fiance' lives. only need drivers license. like this state did in my youth. i once drove Rollbacks and wreckers, from 1988-1995, but not since then, so i need light refresher, but had loads of experience at 1 time. as for truck, most here would disagree with me. but i am looking for a 1960's to late 1980's rollback, preferably Chevrolet. wheel lift and Rollback, always been car geek, so i would rebuild truck, new wiring harness, new motor if i deem it necessary, new clutch pressure plate, i only want 4 speed granny gear transmission, replace all hydraulic hoses, rebuild hydraulic cylinders, new tune up on engine, with new belts and hoses, new brakes, so ill have fully rebuilt unit probably under $15k, i have 3 Harleys for sale, plus 2 classic muscle cars to finance all this.reason for Chevrolet, i have 1 spare differential, 2 spare transmissions, plus 4 good engines, but right truck, ill accept Dodge or Ford. use what i know, familiar with, repairs will be affordable. also im body man, so i can repair body, fresh paint, to look nice, but i hurt so much i stopped doing mechanic and body work, only for myself, i cant bend over car hood over 30 min without severe back pain, or under a dash. so towing is only a few min to hook up, then my back can relax. gambling, but current job, company tured against customers, turned into toxic work place, looking for a way out. that pays decent

Oh I do fully understand this is a commercial for a company to sell a product .. butt there is a lot of bad info being shared .. he don’t charge retail rates cause of his feelings ??? That’s not good business?? Butt best of luck to him Let’s think 🤔 He says each truck makes 100,000 a year Then half of that is costs to run then minus taxes and repairs ?? He’s at lesss that $10 k profit ?? Using basic math ?? Am I wrong ???

WINCH IS NOT CONSIDERED A TIE DOWN!!! PER DOT THAT IS NOT CONSIDERED 2 TIE DOWN POINTS. You can have two chains in the back and one safety change which law has changed you can just use a chain no more you have to have an adjustable strap for your securement that can tighten. That law changed last year !!!!!

This guy is wrong....!!! The winch cable does NOT count as a tie down point. Plus I noticed the strap on the rear driver side tire was touching/rubbing the panel of the car. I wouldn't want to be him if the customer saw that.I would also like to state he should not have both straps pulling toward the back. He should tighten them against each other to make the vehicle more stable
@Tuppex123

agree 100% those straps are also way too long and dont hold the car still sideways at all.

To start a tow business in 2022 and up, totally not worth it. To much what the government is asking and requiring. To those that I've met and trained to get everything together and work. They've started they business to where it was not successful for them. cash calls, insurance calls, donations charities and let me tell ya they lagged for the prices and didn't want to pay shit. Now a days it cost alot. What making money do for yourself as a profit hardly nothing when technically tow owners are working for the government. Insurance is to high, diesel racked up to 8 plus dollars per gallon, maintenance, tires, oil, equipments and since tow businesses is a money making machine to where the government knows that it's their way to charge tow owners money and takes advantage. To start a tow business in california, well good luck. House of wreckers truck sales, tow world, truck body sales, fleet sale west, chevron....flatbed carriers are to expensive. When I started in 1997 was so easy, cheap insurance, gas prices, parts, maintenance, shops, tow yards, foods, rents, etc. Today in 2022 it's impossible to start a new fresh tow business in california. Other state may be a bit easier but to much in it's plates. For those that want to start a tow business...start with 1 truck for yourself and don't own a 2nd or more trucks. To much insurance and registration. Just 1 truck, 1 phone line, business cards, 1 or 2 vending account and stay in your own little circle. Good lucks people.

good luck getting cheap insurance each state has a min that you can carry here in louisiana it's 300k of insurance an you'll need 300k on the hook an garage keepers plus the general coverage so ya not as cheap as one thinks an that's per truck an nobody tells you how saturated the towing biz in your area is an because its so ez to tow everybody wants a tow truck

You need to interview a different tow company bc none of this guys math adds up. Says overhead on his truck is 400, then earlier says his overhead was 4-5k per month per truck… he isn’t direct wether the pay is gross or net. This did not help me decide wether or not I want to branch out into towing

Both are equally as unsafe, the only reason this is argued is if the winch fails and you have behind the truck clear there is no risk, if the car goes rolling after you drive it up however you are in harm's way, the reality is this is a garbage argument because 90 percent of the time if a car goes rolling off from either park failure or winch failure it is going to be bad as it will be going into active traffic or into a customers car or a police car and whatever is behind it and 90 percent of the time something or someone is behind it.
