That i5-2540M a damn good dual core CPU (4 threads). In a lot of good benchmarks (such as Geekbench 6), the i5-2540M actually beats a lot of early intel quad core i5 such as the core i5-750 and even quad core hyperthereaded CPU's like the core i7-2920XM. Especially in Debian Linux, where it absolutely punishes core i5's and i7's running Windows 10, for example.

Yes. So far I replaced a lot of laptop cpu, most of them successful. Only some lenovo and hp laptop have some bios locked that only some cpu supported. But can be bypass with custom bios. Overall most laptop can be upgraded based in my experience.
