@@DeesYard hi! I got the Senninger 3/4" Hose Thread Pressure Regulator - PSI : 25 PSI And the main Tubing Size : 1/2" then I used a coupler to connect to 1/4 tubing that goes to my pots. I’d say the main tube is about 40-50ft long

@natalielaguilar7914 ok, with your run being on the smaller side, I would change to a 15psi pressure regulator. The water pressure is definitely popping off your emitters. If you purchased your supplies from dripdepot.com, you can email their customer service and let them know what's going on, and they will probably do 1 of 2 things, either give you a free shipping code or just send you the new psi needed. Thank you Thomas 😊 I actually just got some more drip tubing in and I'm about to do another tutorial for my yard. It's such a game changer! If you want to do a drip ring, then I would do one similar to mine (around the outside of the rootball planted) and then in 1-2 years once the roots are established, it's probably best to either create a larger ring or just run 2 solid 1/4" tubing to the drip line of the trees canopy on either side with a single emitter (so 2 per tree). Once my trees "outgrow" their current drip ring I plan on using only 2 emitters on either side of the trees drip line. Now the emitters depend on your soil. If you have clay based soil (like I do) I recommend the 1/2gph drip tubing or 1gph (if using single emitters) If you have more of a sandy based soil. I would recommend a 1gph drip tubing or 2gph single emitters. The 5' trees probably won't have a significantly larger rootball until the roots are established. Your drip ring will probably be either the same size as mine or maybe 1 or 2 extra emitters. If you have more emitters you can run your water for less time and with less, you may have to run it longer. 😂😅🤣 my response is all over the place, hopefully I answered your question!

Right now the trees have about 5 drippers emitting .5gph so they are receiving roughly 2.5 gallons every hour. When I run it for the full 2 hours they each get about 5 gallons. So basically I soak them and then let them dry out a bit in between waterings. That seems to work the best with my soil type. If I get rain I just water again when needed. When we have drought conditions during the hot summer I water them 2x's per week and run it for 2 hours each time. I always run my drip in the early morning (5am).

Thank you. I run the system until the trees get a good deep watering and then check them daily to see when they are starting to dry out. It really depends on your soil type and climate. For me with clay soil, a 2 hour run twice a week does the trick. But it really is trial and error. You can either check with your finger in soil or get a soil moisture meter.

Thank you. I don't water in the winter, we get enough rain. I just undo my hose bib attachments and bring them inside so they don't freeze. I also take the end caps off to drain any excess water and then put them back on.

Good video. I think those emitter tubing though you describe are not 0.5 GPH per emitter, but really its 0.5 GPH per foot. I figured that out later and had to change some on my trees to get the proper GPH total. I calculated the C(circumference) in feet of the loop, then multiplied that by the 0.5 GPH per foot to get my total GPH

And DIG brand say "0.65GPH per foot" on their 6" spaced model I guess we just need to look carefully how they list it 😊

Thank you!!! Yes, absolutely will still work. You may notice the emitters being clogged after years of use and may need to be replaced at some point. Normal life expectancy of a system is 12 to 15 years but with hard water it may be 8 to 12 years.

Both ways would work great. I personally would recommend starting with a drip ring that lines the outside of the newly planted rootball. At least for the 1st two years while they are getting established. How much water depends on your soil type and how much rain you get per week. I have clay soil which holds onto water so I watered the trees for 2 hours which provides them 5 gallons total and I only needed to water them twice a week during the summer and drought conditions. You can get a soil water meter from Amazon that will help you determine when they need water.

Now that it's been out there it has settled in and is pretty level with the ground and it does get mowed over from time to time (we keep our mower on a higher setting anyhow) I wouldn't recommend that though. If it’s a super hot day, and left over water inside the 3/4 tubing gets super hot, it expends and pushes the water through the emitters. Since the water drips into the soil, by the time it gets to the roots, it’s already soil temperature. It would be another story if that was overheard sprinkler. Or if you were watering some sensitive plants planted in a black plastic mulch (like my strawberries 🤪).

Does each emitter get 0.5 GPH? So the entire drip line ring would be 0.5 GPH x the number of emitters? How long do you run water to the drip lines each day? I'm about to plant 50 Green Giants and the water source is about 200 feet away from the double row. The double row is about 300' with trees spaced 12' on center 8' on diagonal. Should I be concerned about pressure loss over this long stretch, or will the 3/4" main line be sufficient to allow even flow rates at each drip ring? Great video, I've subscribed!

Yes, every emitter for my drip around my trees is 0.5 GPH. I have 5 emitters per drip ring so every tree gets 2.5 GPH total. 3/4" main line will be perfect for your needs. It's recommended not to go more than 480 feet with the 3/4" tubing. No concern with pressure loss. I have clay soil, so my soil holds onto a lot of water. I only water when the soil around the trees is dry. I've noticed during the summer months, I have to water twice a week for 2 hours each run. They get 5 GPH when I water for 2 hours. You may have to run yours more frequent depending on your soil type (every day or every other day but maybe only for 1 hour if sandy soil).. its kind of a trial and error. The goal is to saturate and water deeply and then don't water again until the soil drys out.

Hey Dee... I'm in East TN like you...although my yard isn't as flat as yours. We live on the side of a mountain so have dips, inclines and declines along the tree path (135 trees, spaced every 5 ft). We are JUST starting year 3 (the year they are supposed to "leap"...so excited btw). Some of our trees have grown over 4 ft in the last 2 years, although some of them aren't doing as well and are probably only 4' tall (which is probably normal for 2 years of growth, considering they were around 28" tall when planted). Anyway, I want to give them all the best growing environment as possible, so we are going to install drip irrigation on the upper half of the trees (the lower half get plenty of water year-round so should be fine). Finally, to my question... I'm trying to avoid some trees, such as the ones in the dips and declines, from getting more water than other trees on the inclines and higher points. I was wondering if the 1/4" drip line will truly regulate that it's not dripping more than "X" gallons per hour. Essentially, I'm asking are the drip emitters strong enough to hold back all the water in the mainline (giving it time to completely fill, stay filled and provide water to all trees in the dips and hills equally along the path) OR should I try to break it up into zones even though they are all along the same path? Splitting into zones (way out across the lawn and up a hill could also provide water pressure issues due to the water needing to travel uphill). Any thoughts are appreciated!

Hi neighbor 👋 your property sounds beautiful!!! I have no doubt that you won't have any problems with the water making it evenly to each tree. I don't think you'll have to do separate zones. The water should evenly disburse and not favor the lower versus the higher trees!! My experience is that the emitters won't start dripping until the mainline is completely filled, and the pressure comes down to the next tubing, then it goes to the 1/4" emitters. Sounds like you have some happy trees!!!

Hi Susi, you can do either!! The one emitter per rose will be a cheaper and easier option, but still work wonderfully. You could also use the tree ring option and get even coverage around each rose, although this creates extra time and money to create each ring. It truly is up to you and you cannot go wrong with either 😊

I have been keeping track on my Google calendar everytime I've had to run the drip this year... this is the 1st summer I've used the drip so I have been keeping close track on when they needed water, I always use a water meter that I stick into the soil to see if its dry or wet prior to watering. If I get absolutely no rain, I had to run the drip twice a week (typically it looks like I ran it on a Tuesday and Friday 🤣😅) and I run it for 2 hours. Right now the trees have about 5 drippers emitting .5gph so they are receiving roughly 2.5 gallons every hour. When I run it for the full 2 hours they each get about 5 gallons. So basically I soak them and then let them dry out a bit in between waterings. That seems to work the best with my soil type. If I get rain I just water again when needed. Right now with the cooler temperatures I'm noticing they only need a good watering once a week. I also run the drip 1st thing in the morning. During our drought season during July this year my water bill never got over $100. Averaged around $60-$80.

Well done. That answered all my questions. I haul water out in the country. I will connect to my 320 caged tank and I believe I will just need 1 tank per week for my treeline needs. Also, once they are established in a year I can reduce their needs. Question? I read that their root system is shallow...I am in a very High wind zone. I fear even though they are wind breaks, since their root system is shallow, if too much moisture, they might tip over? I have unpredictable rains in summer and same for snow however, this year was an excellent snow year, I might need extra drainage so the ground doesn't become over saturated.. Any input on this?

Yes, after a year you can cut back some on watering. I've never heard or have had issues with high winds and I get high winds here!! The 1st year I did have to stake a few for a few months if they leaned over, after that, nothing.

Take off the timer and pieces connected to your water spigot and put them somewhere they won't freeze (house/garage). I unscrew the end caps to let remaining water drip out so it's not stuck in tubing, you made have to blow the water out with air. Then I replace end caps and the tubing stays right where it's at. Pretty simple winter care.

That's just what I went with, and what happened to be in stock at the time of purchase. You can use any amount of emitters that you would like and just calculate how much water they will receive each hour. The spacing of the emitters isn't really important in this setting.

I run the system until the trees get a good deep watering and then check them daily to see when they are starting to dry out. It really depends on your soil type and climate. For me with clay soil, a 2 hour run twice a week does the trick. But it really is trial and error. You can either check with your finger in soil or get a soil moisture meter.

Drip lines are so much better than soaker hoses. Soaker hoses don't provide an even water and they tend to only last for a couple months and then start leaking or burst. That's been my experience at least.

I would rather install a drip tape with 24 or 36 inches emitters than a soaker hose. Or stick to the suggested drip tubbing. Drip tapes and drip tubing are way more precise and saves a ton (gallons ) of water ! And you don’t water the grass between the plants . 😁

Hi 👋 Yes, I have a drip ring around each tree and it has been working great!! Im so happy I installed the drip irrigation and have no regrets at all. I looked at soaker hoses but they have a lot of issues after a while, leaks are very common.

@@DeesYard also for my newly planted thuja emerald greens, my landscaper said I don't need to add bark mulch around the trees. He mixed the existing soil with organic compost when he planted the trees. Do you recommend adding the bark mulch to the base of the trees?

I always add mulch around all my plants. Trees prefer to live in the woods naturally and don't typically grow in lawns so I like to create a space for them that they would prefer. Not to mention the trees won't compete for water with surrounding weeds/grass and the mulch breaks down and helps feed the soil. It's really your preference and either way the trees will probably do just fine but I like to provide an optimal growing condition 😁

My emerald greens were planted 2 weeks ago and I've been watering everyday for 2.5 hrs with a looped soaker hose (from and back of tree) until I get my drip system in. They do 1 gallon per foot per hour so about 4 gallons of water per day for each tree.. issue is the bottom of my trees are turning a light grey green so I think I'm over watering or under...I can't tell. When I dig 8 inches in the soil is pretty damp and a mix of compost and sand soil.

Right now I have 5 emitters for each tree that are .5gph each, so the trees get around 5 gallons each when I run it for 2 hours. I have clay soil so it's best for me to run smaller emitters for a longer time. This promotes deeper watering. I personally won't go above 2 gph emitters because of my soil type. If you have a sandy soil you can use higher emitters for a shorter period.

Great question 😊 Over-wintering is preparing the drip system for winter. I drain the water out so the tubing isn't full of water so when the temperatures drop below freezing the water doesn't freeze up and cause issues.

Awesome video! I have a straight line of 22 green giants along my fence which is about 100 feet long. The trees are 5 feet tall. I wanted to install a drip system with the rings around each tree like you did. 1)Would you suggest the main line from the spigot be 3/4 inch or can I go with 1/2 inch? I plan to use the same 1/4 inch drip line for the rings around each tree. 2)Should I go with the 9inch spaced emitters like you did or could I go with 6inch? My water pressure coming out is currently 80psi. 3)Do I definitely need a regulator to bring it down to 25psi? 4)Lastly, will the amount of water be the same from the start of the line to the end? Or should I somehow feed both ends of the main line from the spigot that way I have a constant flow and even disbursement of water throughout? Thank you in advance!!

Hi Joseph! 1) If your trees are less than 100 feet from the hose spigot then the preferred size for your needs is 1/2" mainline. You can use up to 200 feet length with 1/2". 2)It doesn't matter, either is great. 3) Yes, I recommend a pressure regulator otherwise you may deal with tubing and connections blow. I'd rather play it safe and not lose a lot of water if I'm not monitoring it closely without regulator. 4) yes, I have no issues with my further trees getting less water. No need to loop it back to connect. 5) you will love the drip system!!

Super helpful video! I just got 40 5’ Green Giants installed yesterday with mulch and I am in the Philadelphia area (I believe Zone 6). A few questions: - Should I water everyday in the early days/weeks? The installer said run a hose for 60 seconds over each tree everyday for a month. Seems like it would be excessive? - I purchased a whole kit from Drip Depot (great rec!) and it’s arriving next week. I ordered the .5 GPH 9” spaced 1/4” tube for the ring. I believe my soil is sandstone based. How long would you recommend I run it? How many emitters? And how often each week? I also purchased a water meter because I know a lot of the answers are based on soil dampness/weather and not just numbers and schedule. - The summer is expected to be 85-95 degrees temps. I assume I should expect more watering in general? - Any harm in setting the drip around 9a instead of early morning?

Hi George, Thank you! -Based on you mentioning you have more of a sandy soil versus clay and the fact we are about to hit the hottest part of the year especially with the temperatures you mentioned. The installer may be correct with the watering recommendation. 5' trees being installed in June will require more watering then if they were installed during the spring or fall. -Once you install the drip system you are going to love it!! It really saves so much time!! I would build a drip ring around outside of the root ball of each tree. Based on the size of the tree it will probably end up being around 6 or 7 emitters for each tree. With that many emitters you will get either 3 or 3 1/2 gallons for each tree per hour. Based on a more sandy soil, you may want to run the drip daily (if no rain) for about 30 mins until the temperatures get back to 70s. Just keep in mind, I am not familiar with sandy soils except they are well draining and require frequent watering. The best advice I can give you is just get into a rhythm with watering. The water meter will help you will that. -Personally this is what I would do: water the trees daily as recommended (unless it rains with a sufficient amount of rainfall .5inch). Once you install the drip system, I would run it in the morning (anytime in the morning is great, before 11am is best). Before running it, use the water meter right next to the rootball to determine if the drip even needs to be run. If the meter says the soil is still wet or on the higher side of moist don't water. On the flip side, if the water meter is on the lower side of moist or in the dry range, water. Keep doing this and you will get into a rhythm and understand when and how long to water. You will notice, once we transition back into fall, the trees won't require as much water. Earlier I mentioned to run the drip for 30mins, which is just a guess. It's best just to turn on the drip (before mulching) and time it. See long long it takes for the entire area to be saturated with water. My guess is 30min to an hour. Hopefully this helps, I have a clay based soil that holds onto water so I typically only need to water 1-2 times a week for 2 hours each time. That is the rhythm my water meter helped me get into.

😆 Yes, it's definitely tricky at 1st. 1. Yes, that sounds good. I would 1st make sure that 30mins is a good starting point. Definitely make sure the drip ring saturates the rootball area and however long that takes would be the timeframe for daily watering. 2. In the fall, you may only need to continue a 30min watering, just less often. It truly depends on how much your soil retains the moisture. Good luck!! That water meter helped me a ton!

It's been working great! I'm not sure what type soil you have, that would probably be ideal for sandy soil. I have clay soil and only water 2hours (5 gallons total) every 4 days. (When it doesn't rain a good amount). I've had a rainy summer so I haven't had to water much at all.

Once you kink that 3/4 tubing, it’s hard to get it fixed. Many times you have to cut in that spot and get a splicer (pictured in the video). If you have enough room to have a super smooth and long 90, then it’s fine, otherwise I would suggest to use a 90 degree fitting pictured in this video !

I run my drip for 2 hours which provides 5 gallons per tree during that amount of time. I only run it once or twice a week (when needed) I never run it around the clock only once during that day that I turn it on. Hopefully this makes sense? Basically, I let my trees dry out some and then run the drip once the soil around them gets dry. It all depends on how much rain we get during that week.

Yes, I personally recommend the tree ring to get the best coverage over the current rootball thats newly planted. Once the roots branch out, and are further away from the tree, then I would adjust to a drip-ring or 2 emitters further from the trunk to encourage the roots to search for water further out. If that makes sense 😁
