I so much enjoyed this video. Will absolutely have to try this!

Please do! give it a try and let me know how you get on, a couple of people have mentioned they've not had much luck with replicating it so i'm curious as to why that is. I wonder if a little thinned white ink in the cracks would be an addition that makes it easier for people to replicate.

Very nice. My process is about the same as yours. I use a clear UV resin. The resin is on the thick side and the surface tension keeps it from runing off the side. Once it is poured on or painted on can hit it right away with UV to have inperfections in surface or let it set for a bit and it will self level. Love your tutorials.

Thanks! Appreciate you watching them. Uv resin is something I've not really dived into yet, but I think soon will be time to do so, because I spotted some uv putty the other day, which I've got some ideas for using in display basing.

Thanks for the vid. I’m buying the exact same varnish you used and will be attempting this for my Aeldari 👍
@nofixedcourse2 ай бұрын
Awesome! thanks for watching. that varnish is also good for gap filling smaller gaps if you paint in sub assemblies before you put stuff together. takes a couple of coats, but once its dry you can just run a little bit of colour over the top and the gap will be like it was never there!

So I did the bases. I found difficulty making the cracks in the ice noticeable. They’re basically invisible. Other than that, they look good
@nofixedcourse2 ай бұрын
@@bravecolor1126 little bit of thinned slightly off white paint or ink in the cracks might work well as a fix for that. I suspect I potentially went deeper or wider than it initially looks on the video so they show up more.

Ill in a few weeks attempt to mix this with another technic, badland tech primed white and contrast on top to create the snow area firest as raised areas, will hopefully make the ice looks like it flows into the snow rather than on top.

Hey, I really love the way this looks! I was wondering which colour do you think I should use for some of the "tactical rocks" some minis have or how I should integrate them into this basing scheme. I'm thinking about painting them in a regular light grey and letting them be halfway sunken into the ice or touching the bottom. Which do you think would look best?
@nofixedcourse8 күн бұрын
I think if you put the rocks and some gravel on part of the base before you do anything (a small section or something, just to suggest the edge of a frozen lake or pool) and then paint the blue over everything as I show in the video, that way you should still be able to see some of the smaller pieces but the colour will suggest that they're deeper underwater, then any of the larger rocks that stick out once you've added the varnish or resin (you may want it a little thicker to cover the sand or gravel so a UV resin might do the job better) can be painted in a neutral grey as you've suggested (also depends on the colour of the model going on the base, if there's a lot of red on the model, adding a touch of green to the rocks with a wash or by mixing green into the grey before you highlight, will go well. Hope that helps, it's difficult to describe what I'm thinking though 🤣

I like the video, but resin can do this as well with many less steps. I encourage hobbyists to give resin a try. Remember to use a backlight with it though.
@nofixedcourse2 күн бұрын
I picked up some UV resin this weekend which I've been playing around with ironically, definitely a future video as an alternative to this, but I like having stuff like this so that someone younger getting into the hobby can just go into Hobbycraft and get what they need without parents worrying about them using toxic resins. Or someone allergic to resin for example might need something like this.

Could citadel ardcoat work as the varnish here? Ive never hsed it before but id like to know before i use it in case i need to return it
@nofixedcourse5 ай бұрын
I'll be honest, every time i've used citadel ardcoat for similar stuff it hasn't sanded well at all, but maybe I wasn't leaving it long enough to cure properly. It's useful stuff, but maybe not for this particular application. Unless your budget is strictly limited to that one pot of varnish, get some tamiya but keep the ardcoat and test some on a plain base, sanding a section in 24hr intervals. Both have their uses for hobby stuff.

You could potentially get away with It if you put the snow around the feet, you'd just have to put more snow nearby so it doesn't just look like they've conveniently stood in the only two patches of snow around!

@aaronchapman66662 ай бұрын
You can cut into the basing and then cut away the small part of basing - then sand and then re glue. If the legs have buckled then lining may be needed.

Hey, been wanting to do ice bases for ages and this looks ace! Quick question, you do 2 layers of x-22, then theres the part you mentioned that you did a 2 layers and then some contrast paints. Is that 2 layers in total or another 2 layers of what's already shown in the video, so 4 layers in total?
@nofixedcourse6 ай бұрын
The more layers the better really with tamiya clear, I'd have to go through the video again to double check, but in hindsight, if you can do a few more layers of the clear, it will add to the illusion of depth in the base, so do that. Just make sure each layer is completely dry before adding the next.
@klobb12366 ай бұрын
@@nofixedcourse Thanks! Should've realised not long after that you mentioned you have 5-6 layers on, which answers my question, sorry. I'm giving these a try, slowly but surely doing them, hopefully I wont have the issue with the cracks other people seem to be mentioning. Ill let you know how it goes?
@klobb12366 ай бұрын
@@nofixedcourse Unfortunately I ran into the issue with the cracks. Did make me wonder if perhaps i'm putting on the varnish too thinly? Do you put it on quite thick?
@nofixedcourse6 ай бұрын
@klobb1236 it's fairly thick yes, I suppose that makes sense if you're used to gw or most miniature paint range varnishes, if you put them on too thick they go cloudy and rubbery, but tamiya doesn't do that so you can put on thicker layers. It's looking like I'll either have to do an updated video covering some of the issues people have had, or a little troubleshooting guide on the Facebook page.

Awesome tutorial 👌 have you tried AK glass coat gauzy agent? I’m wondering which would be the better choice between the tamiya clear and the ak glass coat for all things super shiny, I currently gsw resin and that works a treat but I can’t brush that on unless I have disposable brushes
@nofixedcourse Жыл бұрын
I haven't tried that no, but I imagine they're probably quite similar if the ak stuff dries hard as well. the tamiya is designed for clearcoats on model cars so it sands really nicely.

@@nofixedcourse it might be the right choice for then as the AK pot would last me three lifetimes 😂

Pardon me, im attempting to follow your process but I'm having trouble with the cracks, each time i put the clear coat over them they wash out and go transparent. I am using a base that was primed black instead of white do you think that is the issue?
@nofixedcourse Жыл бұрын
The primer colour shouldn't affect it, the cracks shouldn't be deep enough to touch the primer or paint. Try a few layers of just clear coat without cracks, then carve in the cracks, sand over them (but don't blow or shake off any dust from the sanding process, this material is what fills the cracks to make them look natural). Other than that I'm not sure what could be the issue, make sure the clearcoat isn't thinned? I'll have to investigate a different method for people if it's not working the way it should for some.
