Jordan’s largest landfill Al Ghabawi manages over 3,750 tonnes of solid waste every day.
The landfill, run by the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), is under pressure as solid waste has significantly increased in several cities following population growth from an influx of Syrian refugees. The landfill not only serves the capital city of Amman, it also receives waste from the cities of Ruseifa, Zarqa, Muwaqqar and Sahab.
Together with the European Union we are assisting GAM in improving its waste operations by investing in the expansion of the landfill with an additional sixth cell
Al Ghabawi landfill operations are also supported by United Kingdom, TaiwanICDF and donors to the SEMED MDA (Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taipei China).
