It'd be interesting to see a footage comparison, as apparently the component output is a raw output, whereas the digital recording and seemingly firewire passthrough use 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. If the usb adaptor supports better than that(ideally 4:4:4, but I'd guess that's only common on commercial products) there could potentially be a significant improvement.

This camera is/was a prosumer model which doesn't come with xlr input, but you can always connect it to a wireless lavaliere mike or use another recording system like the Zoom Mikes that you will sync with the camera afterwards.
